Revenge Forged in Prison

Chapter 227: You Are Investigating Me

Jesse was so distracted that he didn’t watch where he was going and accidentally bumped into someone. A sweet, familiar fragrance wafted from the woman, stirring up happy memories. A smile instinctively tugged at his lips until he saw who it was. The smile vanished instantly. Raquel grabbed his arm.

“Jesse, this is all my fault. I shouldn’t have been so fickle or kept in touch with Joseph behind your back. But I cut things off with him three years ago! He’s been harassing me ever since. I’ve turned him down every time! If I really wanted to be with him, why would he send the love letters? He wrote them straight to your house?”

She wailed, “Jesse, he’s blackmailing me! He knew there was a good chance your family would see those letters. He wanted you to doubt me and call off our engagement just so he could force me back to him!”

Jesse’s heart momentarily softened. “Is what you’re saying really true?”

Seeing her chance, Raquel nodded frantically. “Yes! If I’m lying, may I get hit by a car right now!”

A flicker of reluctance passed through Jesse’s eyes, yet he still presented the evidence he had recently acquired. “You say you ended things three years ago? Then explain this.”

The moment Raquel saw the photo, her face froze. The picture clearly showed her and Joseph walking into a five-star hotel together. But worse, the way they’d gazed at each other, deep and longing, was captured clearly.

Jesse’s voice was tight with suppressed anger. “Care to explain, Raquel?”

When he got hold of this photograph, he couldn’t believe his own eyes. But the truth was undeniable. Every sweet memory they’d shared now felt tainted, every happy moment turned to ash. Their relationship was over.

Sometimes, he wondered if Caleb hadn’t intervened that day, if Raquel’s affair had remained hidden, could he have gone on blissfully unaware? But it was too late now. Raquel’s true nature had been exposed to the world, and the one who’d ripped off her mask was none other than Caleb, the man who’d stolen twenty years of his life! Every time he thought about it, his hatred for Caleb grew. Caleb had ruined everything. After reaping all the benefits for so long, it was only fair Jesse return…

Raquel’s hands trembled violently. “You’ve been investigating me?”

Jesse replied coolly, “What did you expect? I can’t just take people’s word for things. I needed to see the truth for myself.”

Raquel bit her lip, wrestling with her options. Joseph’s father had frozen his accounts again. He was broke. Staying with him meant no perks, just hardship. Meanwhile, Jesse had caught the eye of Harris Xiques, Head of the Xiques family. His future was bright, his potential limitless. The choice was obvious.

So Raquel swallowed her pride and begged, “Jesse, I don’t care if you looked into me. That night, Joseph dragged me there against my will! I never wanted to go!”
