Chapter 214: Wait and See A While Longer
Uncertain if Manny had seen through him, Jesse couldn't help but feel nervous. If his deception were discovered, not only would he fail to achieve a life of wealth and power, but he might also leave a negative impression on the Xiques family. Anyone wishing to mingle in high society couldn't afford to offend the Xiques. The outcome would be decided in that single moment.
Manny took the bag, his face betraying no emotion. “In that case, thank you, Mr. Jesse.” With that, he left with the item in hand.
Jesse stood behind him, contemplating whether to call out, but eventually dismissed the thought. I had better forget it. There were numerous housekeepers around, and if anyone caught him in any compromising situation, his future would be thrown into question. Even if he couldn’t climb the social ladder through the Xiques family, he certainly couldn’t afford to offend the Quixall family.
Upon his return, Manny immediately relayed what happened to his boss. “Mr. Xiques, Mr. Jesse has tried to deceive us by giving us a woman’s hair. He has no intention of going for a DNA test.”
Harris waved his hand dismissively. “Then there’s no need to look for him for now. Just use this strand of hair for the DNA test, and then inform them of the results.”
Manny respectfully replied, “Understood.” After a brief pause, he added, “As for Mr. Jenkins…”
Harris pondered for a while. “Let’s wait and see for a little longer. I feel that things aren’t as simple as they seem.”
Five days had passed, and Caleb felt that his injuries had significantly healed, so he wanted to be discharged from the hospital. Chelsea pleaded, “Why don’t you rest a little longer? Once you leave, you won’t have access to good medical facilities, and I’m worried there won’t be anyone to look after you.”
Caleb chuckled. “I’m not a three-year-old kid who needs someone to babysit.”
Chelsea sighed helplessly. “Fine, I’ll go sort out your paperwork. You can leave the hospital this afternoon.”
Caleb nodded. “I appreciate your help.” He initially thought that the matter would be resolved smoothly.
Surprisingly, after Chelsea left, a bodyguard dressed in black barged into the ward. “Are you Caleb? Come with me.”
Caleb warily asked, “Who are you? Why should I go anywhere with you?”
The bodyguard sneered, “It doesn’t matter who I am. When Madam Yardley calls for you, you must come!” After he finished speaking, he forcibly dragged Caleb out of the ward.
After exerting an enormous amount of effort, Caleb finally managed to break free. “No need to drag me. I can walk on my own!”
The bodyguard sized him up. “You’re not planning any tricks, are you, kid?”
Caleb responded with a nonchalant look. “As someone who just recovered from a serious illness, there’s no way I can escape from you even if I were to resort to tricks, right?”
Upon hearing the remark, the bodyguard felt at ease. “Then come with me. As long as you don’t play any tricks, I won’t lay a finger on you.”
And so, the two of them walked down the hospital corridor, drawing the attention of many. Simply put, the bodyguard’s aura made him stand out like a sore thumb. Anyone who saw him would feel a chill down their spines, their knees growing weak. All they wished for was to stay out of his way.
Upon reaching the hospital entrance, Caleb glanced toward the reception window, but he didn’t see Chelsea. The bodyguard hurriedly urged, “What are you looking at? Let’s move!”
Silently, Caleb made his way out of the hospital’s main entrance. In reality, he wasn’t looking for Chelsea to save him. He just felt that he should inform her, so as not to cause her any worry.
The bodyguard swung the car door open, instructing, “Get in.” Left with no other choice, Caleb obediently got into the car. The car journeyed on, eventually coming to a halt near an abandoned factory. Caleb glanced around. “Where are we?”
