Chapter 183: He Threatened Me
Biting her lower lip, Raquel cried her heart out.
“Jesse, it was Joseph. He… he threatened me. The first time we met, he abruptly seized my hand and touched me. I refused, and he threatened me, saying he would let everyone know I was a slut. No matter what, I’m a girl. How could I let others stab me in the back at their whim? Joseph is a man. He can afford to be nonchalant, but I must maintain my dignity! Otherwise, where would that leave my family’s reputation and my father’s honor?”
She spoke with her voice choked with sobs, crying in such a pitiful manner that it was hard not to feel sympathy for her. Seeing her like that, Jesse felt a pang in his heart.
“Did he really do that to you? What happened next? Did he ever force you into anything?”
Raquel shook her head.
“No. After that time, I became wary. I stopped meeting him alone. Even if we did meet, I always made sure to have someone with me. That’s how I prevented him from having his way.”
With a sense of pity, Jesse wiped away her tears.
“You’re so pitiful, Raquel.”
Feeling wronged, Raquel threw herself into his arms, sobbing uncontrollably.
George unexpectedly said, “In the past, he forced you. But what about now? Today, you went to the hospital with him and were caught on camera. How would you explain that?”
Upon hearing these words, Raquel ceased weeping, cautiously glancing at Jesse. As expected, his expression darkened again, invoking a sense of fear in her. Her heart pounded as she hastily clarified, “He went there himself. I had nothing to do with it! Wouldn’t we have taken the same car if I truly went with him? Mr. Quixall, Jesse, look at that video. I drove my own car, with Joseph’s vehicle right beside me. He spotted me halfway through my journey and started tailing me in his car, which was why we ended up meeting at the hospital.”
With furrowed brows, George watched the video once more. As it turned out, Raquel was right. They hadn’t gone there in the same car. Raquel took off first, and then Joseph drove his car, heading in a different direction. Suddenly, his heart softened.
George softened his stance, saying gently, “Raquel, I’m truly sorry. It was wrong of me to blame you.”
With a smile tugging her lips, Deborah said, “See, George? I told you she was falsely accused, didn’t I? But you didn’t believe me.”
Raquel managed a smile through her tears. “It’s okay, Mr. Quixall, Mrs. Quixall. As long as the misunderstanding is cleared, I don’t mind it. I’m just worried that people might ridicule Jesse because of…”
Deborah praised, “Raquel is such a considerate child. Even when she was wronged, she was worried about Jesse’s reputation. Where would I find such a good daughter-in-law in the future?”
Upon hearing these words, Ivan and Shreya knew that everything was settled that evening. However, Ivan still wanted to make sure.
“So… Mr. Quixall, about the engagement… Is it still being called off?”
George glared at him.
“Why call off the engagement when it’s proven that Raquel is innocent?”
Ivan rubbed his nose, admitting sheepishly, “That’s true…”
Thanks to Raquel’s quick thinking, she managed to resolve the situation smoothly. After the incident with the Sherman family, the Levinson family can no longer endure further turmoil. If anything went awry at this crucial juncture, I would truly be at my wit’s end.
Deborah gave her son a meaningful glance.
“Jesse, aren’t you going to take Raquel upstairs to comfort her? Look how scared she is now.”
