Chapter 101: Stirs Up Chaos

Yelena gave a subtle hint, asking, “Did someone hurt you again? Tell us honestly, and we’ll make sure to stand up for you.”

Agnes, wiping away her tears, replied pitifully, “Earlier, Mrs. Quixall asked me to bring the dishes to the table, and I did exactly that. But the moment I got close, Mr. Caleb pointed straight at me and berated me, saying that servants aren’t allowed at the table. He even claimed my presence was an eyesore to him!”

George furrowed his brows. “That’s unacceptable! Did you try to defend yourself?”

Agnes, still in tears, recounted, “I did. I told him that when you hosted family feasts, you always let the servants join at the table. So why is it that now, with a thirteen-course meal, I can’t even come near it? But instead of hearing me out, Mr. Caleb just kept scolding me. He said that since you weren’t home, he was in charge of the Quixall family, and everything had to go through him!”

George was so angry that he felt a tightness in his chest. “He’s truly crossed the line! How dare he stir up chaos in the Quixall family! He’s just a bastard from who knows where.”

With that, he stormed over to Caleb. “Stop eating! Why are you even eating?”

Caleb, unfazed, looked up and asked casually, “Dad, what’s wrong?”

George shot back, “What’s wrong? Did you claim to be the one in charge of the Quixall family now?”

Caleb glanced at Agnes, then displayed an innocent expression. “No, Dad. I never said that. It’s probably Agnes making up stories about me again.”

“Why would Agnes make things up about you? What could she possibly gain from doing that?”

Caleb leaned forward, his fingers interlaced, and calmly explained, “There are plenty of motives to consider. First, Agnes is a servant in this house. If she managed to bring me down, it would elevate her status within the Quixall family. Second, Agnes has always looked down on me. She’s tried to sabotage me countless times behind my back. Her actions have been spiteful and downright malicious. It’s infuriating.”

He turned to Yelena for support and added, “Yelena can back me up on this. Like the time I went to the hospital to bring Jesse some fruit. Agnes knew full well that Jesse was allergic to cherries, yet she purposely filled the basket with them. That led to a misunderstanding where Jesse thought I was trying to harm him!”

As soon as Jesse’s name came up, George’s face turned pale. “Agnes, is this true?”

Agnes trembled. “Mr. Quixall, Mr. Caleb specifically ordered me to buy more cherries. Without his instructions, I wouldn’t have made that choice on my own!”

She had underestimated Caleb completely. No wonder he asked me to buy the fruit and then told me to report back to Mr. Quixall. He has been setting me up all along!

Knowing how much George valued Jesse, Agnes felt a wave of fear wash over her and avoided his gaze entirely.

George let out a sharp huff before turning to Yelena. “Was Jesse okay at that time?”

Though he voiced the question, he already knew the answer deep down. Jesse was all right. If something had truly happened to Jesse, there was no way Deborah and Yelena wouldn’t have told him.

“He was fine. He didn’t eat any of the fruit.”

George breathed a deep sigh of relief. “That’s good to hear. If something had happened to him, the Quixall family would have completely fallen apart.”

His gaze hardened as he demanded, “Agnes, you’re well aware of Jesse’s health condition. Why didn’t you pay closer attention when buying the fruits?”

Agnes was at a loss for words, unsure of how to defend herself.
