Chapter 40
“Jack, please don’t leave! I’m begging you. It’s all that bastard’s fault. I’ve already fired him. Just stay—the company can’t do without you!”
Jack remained silent.
“Jack, if you stay, I’ll make you manager of Skycross. A direct promotion, second only to me. The entire game design and development—I’ll leave it all to you.” Seeing Jack still unmoved, Martin wiped the sweat from his forehead. “And you’ll get 30% of the company’s share. That should be enough, right?!”
Jack’s friends were shocked. This was a huge opportunity! What had happened to Mr. Fowler? He seemed like a completely different person.
“Jack, just stay. The boss is being sincere,” one friend urged. Another added, “Yeah, if you leave, what will we do? We’re a team, and we still need you to lead us.”
Jack’s friends continued to persuade him. At this point, his firm resolve began to waver. He couldn’t bear to part with his friends and teammates.
“Alright. I’ll stay for now.” After careful consideration, Jack finally agreed.
Martin breathed a sigh of relief. “From now on, in Skycross, besides me, you all follow Jack’s orders!” he announced.
Everyone rushed to congratulate Jack. Some couldn’t help but gossip: “He started a fight and ended up becoming the manager! What luck!”
Chad clung to Martin’s feet, looking miserable. “Mr. Fowler… what about me? You can’t do this…”
Martin kicked him away with disgust. “Get lost!” Chad was then thrown out of the company.
Isabel then stepped forward. “Jack, are you alright?”
“Isabel, what are you doing here?” Jack asked in surprise.
“I came to see you. I didn’t expect things to turn out like this. Come on, let me take you to the hospital to treat your wounds.”
Martin agreed, telling Jack to go to the hospital immediately and to return to work whenever he felt able.
As Jack and Isabel headed to the hospital, they unexpectedly encountered Blake.
“Why is Blake here?” Jack asked.
“I said I’d come see you, but he insisted on coming with me,” Isabel replied. Blake added, “Just get in the car.”
The three of them got into the car and drove to the hospital.
“Isabel, Mr. Fowler was really strange today. Was it because of you?” Jack asked.
“It was Blake who helped out; I didn’t do anything,” Isabel said, glancing at Blake. Blake admitted his contribution. He added, “Jack, I’m from the Yates family, so I can handle this. Just focus on your work from now on.”
Jack was reluctant. “I don’t want to cause trouble for you. I was already planning to resign.”
“Jack, if you like it here, just do it. Mr. Fowler has already promoted you, and from now on, the game company will be under your control. Chad won’t dare to cause trouble anymore. You should focus on learning first. When you’re ready, I’ll help you start your own game company. Money won’t be a problem—I’ve got it covered,” Blake said.
Seeing Jack hesitate, Isabel also tried to persuade him. “Don’t you want the whole family to live a better life? We can’t let the relatives look down on us, Jack.”
Hearing this, Jack nodded. “Alright. I understand. I’ll take a year to get the hang of the game company’s operational model and management methods.”
Isabel and Blake were reassured by his decision. Isabel thought to herself that Jack was capable and would surely succeed if he ever started his own company.
At the hospital, Blake went to find a doctor but unexpectedly ran into Amelia.
Ever since losing her child, Amelia had been staying at the hospital. Feeling suffocated, she had stepped outside for fresh air when she saw Isabel and the others arriving. Seeing the blood on Jack’s face, she sneered. “Who did this to you? You had it coming!”
Jack glared at her, his anger rising. He had treated her well in the past, but since joining the Clyde family, she had become bitter.
“You’re the one who had it coming! How dare you talk about others!” Isabel retorted, glaring at Amelia.
Amelia, oblivious to her own disgrace, continued to mock others. “Isabel, you fake daughter of the family, who do you think you are? How dare you talk to me like that!” she shouted harshly.
“If you dare insult my sister again, I’ll tear your mouth apart!” Jack snapped angrily. He was fine with her insulting him, but not his sister. Amelia’s fury only grew as she saw Jack defending Isabel. He had never stood up for her like this before. “What are you? Do you really think you can go against me now?” Amelia sneered.
If she was angered enough, she could have someone deal with the Galvez family.
“Then what about me?” Blake suddenly appeared.
Amelia was taken aback. “Who… who are you?” she asked, confused. She was stunned by his appearance. “He’s gorgeous!” she thought.
“I’m Isabel’s fiancé, Blake,” Blake answered calmly.
Amelia couldn’t believe it. Wasn’t Blake supposed to be that ugly, bedridden man? How could he possibly be the handsome, refined gentleman before her?
“You… you’re lying! This can’t be true!” Amelia still refused to believe it. She sneered at Isabel. “Isabel, where did you find this actor? His acting skills are impressive!”
“What actor? This is my brother-in-law, the fiancé you didn’t want,” Jack snapped. He knew Amelia wouldn’t accept it.
“No, her fiancé is a cripple! How could he look like this?” Amelia’s disbelief deepened.
“He’s healed, okay? But that’s none of your business. I heard you’re suing the Swanson family! It’s all over the news. Amelia, you should mind your own business. Our family doesn’t need your interference,” Jack scolded.
“Jack, don’t waste your time on her. Go get your wounds treated,” Blake said nonchalantly, not even sparing Amelia a glance.
As Jack and Isabel walked away, Amelia stood frozen, a flash of jealousy crossing her mind. Both of them were defending Isabel—why? And Blake, looking perfectly normal and treating Isabel so gently, was a stark contrast to Liam, who had always treated her with disdain.
