Chapter 457: Itโs Too Early To Have A Child Now
As soon as Agnes saw the young couple, her excitement was palpable. She looked as if she might rush over to them.
โGrandina, take it easy,โ Madelyn said, noticing Agnesโs thrill. Her own face lit up with a warm smile.
Sebastian, ever thoughtful, greeted the rest of the family with a polite nod. โGrandpa, Grandma, Dad, Mom.โ
The elders nodded in return.
At a glance, Madelynโs increased maturity was evident. Steven nodded in approval, standing up and leaning on his cane. โAll right, now that everyoneโs here, letโs get started with the meal.โ
โYes, yes, time to eat!โ Agnes chimed in. โOh, look at me, seeing you two lovebirds has made me so excited I nearly forgot we havenโt even had dinner! Letโs sit down, quickly!โ
At her cheerful urging, the family gathered at the dining table. Steven sat at the head, with Agnes beside him. Nigel and Marsha sat on the right, while the young couple sat to the left, comfortably near Agnes.
The dinner spread was truly impressiveโa feast of land and sea fare so abundant it was hard to take it all in at once.
Agnes, radiating happiness, eagerly served the young couple. โCome on now, you two need to eat more!โ
โThank you, Grandma,โ Madelyn said sweetly. Sebastian also seemed to be in high spirits.
As the meal progressed, they heard Agnes murmuring, โIโve been waiting day and night for this. Seeing you two makes me so happy I could cry. I wish I could see you every single day.โ
Before she could continue, Steven scoffed. โIn your dreams. These kids are living their own lives. You think they have time to hang around with you all day?โ
The table erupted in laughter.
Agnes retorted, clearly offended. โReally? All I said was one thing, and youโre already scolding me? I know the kids are busy. I was just joking.โ
โDaydreams wonโt get you anywhere,โ Steven grunted. โLetโs try to live in the real world.โ
โYouโre such a pain, Steven,โ Agnes snapped. โAlways running your mouth. Not even a good meal can shut you up.โ
Their banter had everyone chuckling.
Madelyn laughed, finding Agnes adorable. She grinned and said,
โOh, my!โ Agnes exclaimed, laughing and hugging Madelyn. โYou always know the right thing to say. Youโve made me so happy.โ
โHeh, talkingโs easy,โ Marsha interjected from her seat.
Madelynโs smile vanished, and she straightened, ceasing to laugh.
Marsha continued, with a hint of annoyance, โYou and Sebastian are the same. If we donโt invite you, you wouldnโt visit on your own, would you?โ
โIโm sorryโฆโ Madelyn said quietly.
Sebastian quickly intervened. โMom, donโt blame Madelyn. If anyoneโs at fault, itโs me. Iโve been swamped with work and havenโt thought to visit. Thatโs on me, not her.โ
Marsha was taken aback. Her sonโs swift defense of his wife left her feeling resentful. โAll right, all right,โ she said, flustered. โLooks like your wifeโs the only one who matters to you now. Your poor mother doesnโt count anymore.โ
โMom, thatโs not what I meant,โ Sebastian hastily clarified.
Nigel sighed and frowned. โMarsha, seriously? How old are you? Still arguing with the kids like this? Grow up, will you?โ
Marsha faltered, unprepared for her husbandโs rebuke. Her composure wavered.
The room fell quiet, the tension easing. Agnes piled more food onto Madelynโs plate. โCome on, Maddie, eat up.โ
โGrandma, thatโs plenty,โ Madelyn said, flustered. โI really canโt eat any more.โ
Agnes relentlessly piled more food onto Madelynโs plate until it overflowed, while also enthusiastically loading her own. Madelyn could only stare, inwardly groaning.
Her stomach was smallโhow much did Agnes expect her to eat?
โYou canโt eat?โ Agnes said disapprovingly. โThat wonโt work. Youโre going to be pregnant someday, you know. Youโve got to eat well. If you canโt finish this, how are you going to manage carrying a baby?โ
Madelyn was speechless, watching her plate become a mini-mountain. Agnes then squinted at Madelynโs midsection.
โHuh, thatโs strange,โ she said. โYou two have been engaged for a while. How come thereโs still no baby bump?โ
Without hesitation, she put down her fork and gently touched Madelynโs stomach, which was flat.
Agnes frowned. โOh, you two. I really donโt know what to say. I ran into some old classmates the other day. They all have grandkidsโplump, chubby ones, some even seven or eight years old! But you two? Not even a whisper of a baby!โ
They were careful to prevent pregnancy, and both agreed it was too soon. Besides their busy work lives, Madelyn hadnโt even graduated from university yet. Having a child now was unthinkable.
So she chuckled and said, โGrandma, you might have to wait a little longer. Sebastian and I arenโt ready to have kids just yet.โ
โWhat?โ Agnes gasped, clearly upset. โYouโre not ready? Then when will you be?โ
โWeโฆโ Madelyn cleared her throat. โWe figured weโd wait a year or two. I havenโt even finished school, so-โ
โOh, heavens,โ Agnes interrupted, dramatically despairing.
Only the heavens knew how badly she longed to hold a grandchildโa little one she could spoil.
