Chapter 457: Itโ€™s Too Early To Have A Child Now

As soon as Agnes saw the young couple, her excitement was palpable. She looked as if she might rush over to them.

โ€œGrandina, take it easy,โ€ Madelyn said, noticing Agnesโ€™s thrill. Her own face lit up with a warm smile.

Sebastian, ever thoughtful, greeted the rest of the family with a polite nod. โ€œGrandpa, Grandma, Dad, Mom.โ€

The elders nodded in return.

At a glance, Madelynโ€™s increased maturity was evident. Steven nodded in approval, standing up and leaning on his cane. โ€œAll right, now that everyoneโ€™s here, letโ€™s get started with the meal.โ€

โ€œYes, yes, time to eat!โ€ Agnes chimed in. โ€œOh, look at me, seeing you two lovebirds has made me so excited I nearly forgot we havenโ€™t even had dinner! Letโ€™s sit down, quickly!โ€

At her cheerful urging, the family gathered at the dining table. Steven sat at the head, with Agnes beside him. Nigel and Marsha sat on the right, while the young couple sat to the left, comfortably near Agnes.

The dinner spread was truly impressiveโ€”a feast of land and sea fare so abundant it was hard to take it all in at once.

Agnes, radiating happiness, eagerly served the young couple. โ€œCome on now, you two need to eat more!โ€

โ€œThank you, Grandma,โ€ Madelyn said sweetly. Sebastian also seemed to be in high spirits.

As the meal progressed, they heard Agnes murmuring, โ€œIโ€™ve been waiting day and night for this. Seeing you two makes me so happy I could cry. I wish I could see you every single day.โ€

Before she could continue, Steven scoffed. โ€œIn your dreams. These kids are living their own lives. You think they have time to hang around with you all day?โ€

The table erupted in laughter.

Agnes retorted, clearly offended. โ€œReally? All I said was one thing, and youโ€™re already scolding me? I know the kids are busy. I was just joking.โ€

โ€œDaydreams wonโ€™t get you anywhere,โ€ Steven grunted. โ€œLetโ€™s try to live in the real world.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re such a pain, Steven,โ€ Agnes snapped. โ€œAlways running your mouth. Not even a good meal can shut you up.โ€

Their banter had everyone chuckling.

Madelyn laughed, finding Agnes adorable. She grinned and said,

โ€œOh, my!โ€ Agnes exclaimed, laughing and hugging Madelyn. โ€œYou always know the right thing to say. Youโ€™ve made me so happy.โ€

โ€œHeh, talkingโ€™s easy,โ€ Marsha interjected from her seat.

Madelynโ€™s smile vanished, and she straightened, ceasing to laugh.

Marsha continued, with a hint of annoyance, โ€œYou and Sebastian are the same. If we donโ€™t invite you, you wouldnโ€™t visit on your own, would you?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorryโ€ฆโ€ Madelyn said quietly.

Sebastian quickly intervened. โ€œMom, donโ€™t blame Madelyn. If anyoneโ€™s at fault, itโ€™s me. Iโ€™ve been swamped with work and havenโ€™t thought to visit. Thatโ€™s on me, not her.โ€

Marsha was taken aback. Her sonโ€™s swift defense of his wife left her feeling resentful. โ€œAll right, all right,โ€ she said, flustered. โ€œLooks like your wifeโ€™s the only one who matters to you now. Your poor mother doesnโ€™t count anymore.โ€

โ€œMom, thatโ€™s not what I meant,โ€ Sebastian hastily clarified.

Nigel sighed and frowned. โ€œMarsha, seriously? How old are you? Still arguing with the kids like this? Grow up, will you?โ€

Marsha faltered, unprepared for her husbandโ€™s rebuke. Her composure wavered.

The room fell quiet, the tension easing. Agnes piled more food onto Madelynโ€™s plate. โ€œCome on, Maddie, eat up.โ€

โ€œGrandma, thatโ€™s plenty,โ€ Madelyn said, flustered. โ€œI really canโ€™t eat any more.โ€

Agnes relentlessly piled more food onto Madelynโ€™s plate until it overflowed, while also enthusiastically loading her own. Madelyn could only stare, inwardly groaning.

Her stomach was smallโ€”how much did Agnes expect her to eat?

โ€œYou canโ€™t eat?โ€ Agnes said disapprovingly. โ€œThat wonโ€™t work. Youโ€™re going to be pregnant someday, you know. Youโ€™ve got to eat well. If you canโ€™t finish this, how are you going to manage carrying a baby?โ€

Madelyn was speechless, watching her plate become a mini-mountain. Agnes then squinted at Madelynโ€™s midsection.

โ€œHuh, thatโ€™s strange,โ€ she said. โ€œYou two have been engaged for a while. How come thereโ€™s still no baby bump?โ€

Without hesitation, she put down her fork and gently touched Madelynโ€™s stomach, which was flat.

Agnes frowned. โ€œOh, you two. I really donโ€™t know what to say. I ran into some old classmates the other day. They all have grandkidsโ€”plump, chubby ones, some even seven or eight years old! But you two? Not even a whisper of a baby!โ€

They were careful to prevent pregnancy, and both agreed it was too soon. Besides their busy work lives, Madelyn hadnโ€™t even graduated from university yet. Having a child now was unthinkable.

So she chuckled and said, โ€œGrandma, you might have to wait a little longer. Sebastian and I arenโ€™t ready to have kids just yet.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Agnes gasped, clearly upset. โ€œYouโ€™re not ready? Then when will you be?โ€

โ€œWeโ€ฆโ€ Madelyn cleared her throat. โ€œWe figured weโ€™d wait a year or two. I havenโ€™t even finished school, so-โ€

โ€œOh, heavens,โ€ Agnes interrupted, dramatically despairing.

Only the heavens knew how badly she longed to hold a grandchildโ€”a little one she could spoil.
