Chapter 451: The Person Is Indeed Dead
However, if Janessa were to take the drug, at the very least, there would be a glimmer of hope for her survival. As long as she could escape the hellish prison alive, she was determined to make Madelyn pay, no matter the cost!
Whenever she thought of Madelyn, her hatred intensified. โMadelyn, you unscrupulous woman! I swear Iโll take my revenge on you! If I get out of here alive, Iโll make sure you wish you were dead!โ
With those thoughts in mind, Janessa steeled herself. Then, tilting her head, she swallowed the drug, packaging paper and all. It caught in her throat briefly, but eventually slid down.
After ingesting the drug, Janessaโs heart calmed, and she waited patiently for its effects. โFinished eating yet?โ Suddenly, the prison officer returned to check on her. The officer found Janessa sitting impassively, holding a piece of bread uneaten.
โWhy have you stopped eating? Didnโt I tell you there shouldnโt be any leftovers?โ The prison officer roared, furious at Janessaโs calm demeanor. However, Janessa calmly replied, โIโm sorry, I canโt eat anymore.โ
โEven if you canโt stomach it, you must eat!โ the livid officer insisted. โEat it now!โ Janessa snorted, ignoring the officerโs shouting. The officer was taken aback; her intimidation tactics were useless. Consumed by anger, she flung open the cell door.
โI donโt care what you want! Youโre going to eat!โ The officer barged in and struck Janessa. Janessa grunted in pain. The officer intensified her blows. โSince you know pain, eat! If you refuse, Iโll beat you to death!โ
For a moment, the prison echoed with the crack of whips and the officerโs furious roars. The other prisoners watched, reveling in the spectacle.
โNo wonder the officer hasnโt been bothering us lately. Sheโs moved on to tormenting the newcomer. This is such a relief.โ
โHa, the officer should hit that prisoner harder! Itโll be even better if the prisoner dies from all the beatings. Then, that officer wonโt be able to act all arrogant anymore.โ
Janessa, battered and bruised, stubbornly refused another bite of bread, remarkably silent. This was because the drug was taking effect. At first, she felt the whip, but all sensation gradually faded. Her limbs grew numb, her vision blurred, and she was plunged into darkness. Her body stiffened, collapsing onto the ground.
โAh!โ The other prisoners cried out in shock. โIs she dead?โ
โWhat utter nonsense!โ The prison officer glared. โShe merely got knocked unconscious. Youโll end up the same way if you donโt behave.โ The prisoners fell silent.
The officer nonchalantly kicked Janessa. โHey, stop playing dead and get up!โ Janessa remained still.
โF*ck! Still pretending, are you?โ the officer cursed, shoving and slapping Janessa. Janessa remained unmoved, unconscious.
โWhy isnโt she moving? Is she really dead?โ The officer shuddered, panicking. She checked for breath. Her eyes widened in horror. She stumbled backward.
โSheโฆ Sheโs stopped breathing? That canโt be possible.โ The officer muttered, incredulous. โI only hit her a few times! How could she be dead?โ
A female inmate from the next cell yelled, โThe prisonerโs dead! The prison officer has killed someone!โ All the female prisoners joined the excited outcry.
Those prisoners, long accustomed to the officerโs bullying, had been itching for revenge but feared retaliation. The officerโs accidental death was cause for celebration; their shouts grew louder.
The prison warden arrived, her voice booming. โEnough with the commotion! Everyone shut up! Anyone who continues will have their sentence extended by ten years!โ Silence fell.
The warden found the flustered officer and Janessaโs lifeless body. The warden calmly instructed an officer, โSheโs dead. Take the body away and notify her family.โ
โUnderstood,โ the officer replied. They moved Janessaโs body. The warden then addressed the officer who had beaten Janessa. โCome with me!โ The officer obeyed.
Three hours later, at Thornton Corporation, Cyrus rushed to Madelyn with alarming news. โMs. Thornton, thereโs been a terrible incident. Janessa has unexpectedly died in prison!โ
โWhat?โ Madelyn stood, skeptical. โCyrus, did you perhaps mishear?โ
โI swear I didnโt,โ Cyrus assured her. โThe prison has confirmed it. Sheโs dead.โ
Madelyn was disbelieving. โHow could a perfectly healthy person die after just two days in prison?โ
