Chapter 421: You Are The Outsider
โThe doctor said Fatherโs illness came on suddenly and is quite severe,โ Cheryl said. โThey suspect a peculiar strain of flu.โ
Madelyn scoffed. โDo you really think thatโs possible?โ
โThatโs impossible!โ Cheryl exclaimed urgently. โFather has always been strong and healthy, extremely disciplined with his diet. How could he fall ill with such a strange disease?โ
Scarlet, distressed, her nose running and tears streaming, added, โIsnโt that so? For years, Rupert believed โhealth is the foundation of everything,โ strictly managing our familyโs health, even taking us for annual check-ups. How could someone who cherishes his health so much suddenly fall ill?โ
Madelyn fell into deep thought. โThen there might be something odd. If it wasnโt a health issue, it must be unexpected circumstances. Otherwise, how could a perfectly healthy person suddenly collapse?โ
As she spoke, Madelyn began to draw connections. Where exactly did things go wrong? Her thoughts drifted back to her previous life. Back then, her fatherโs annual check-ups rarely revealed any issues. However, one day, he suddenly collapsed. His robust health had, overnight, become fragile, making him vulnerable. The circumstances were strikingly similar to Cherylโs fatherโs situation.
In Madelynโs previous life, Regina and her daughter, Eunice, plotted against her father. Could the person plotting against Rupert also be someone close to him?
Madelynโs eyes lit up. โMadelyn, has your father been closely associating with anyone recently?โ
Cheryl was confused. โWhat do you mean?โ
Madelyn explained, โSince your fatherโs situation wasnโt an accident, someone might have deliberately harmed him. Recall carefully who your father contacted recently.โ
โUmโฆโ Cheryl hesitated, deep in thought. Then, โIโve got it, itโs Janessa!โ
Madelyn feigned a cough. โCheryl, I know you despise Janessa, and I do too. But I heard your father kicked her out of the house, hasnโt he? Try to be a bit more rational.โ
โDonโt let your dislike for Janessa cloud your judgment. Blaming her too quickly might make you overlook the real culprit.โ
But Cheryl remained adamant. โNo, Ms. Thornton, trust me, my judgment is infallible.โ
โDo you have any proof?โ Madelyn retorted.
Cheryl shook her head. โEvidence? No. But somethingโs fishy. I remember that day. I was in the study with Father, discussing business, when Janessa suddenly returned homeโฆโ
Cheryl recalled that day. She and her father were engrossed in a discussion when Janessa unexpectedly burst through the door. โDad, Cheryl.โ
โWhy are you here?โ
As soon as Janessa entered, she greeted them. Unwelcoming glances made it clear her presence wasn't appreciated. Cheryl immediately called for the housekeeper. โDidnโt I make it clear Janessa isnโt welcome? Why are you still standing there? Escort her out!โ
Rupert coldly scoffed. โYouโre no longer part of the Sherritt family. Donโt bother coming back.โ
To their surprise, Janessa laughed. โDad, Madelyn, Iโve barely been here three minutes and youโre already eager to send me away. Thatโs not how our family treats guests, is it?โ
Cheryl scoffed. โYou said it yourself. Our hospitality is reserved for guests, and youโre not one.โ
โItโs been a few days, Cheryl. Youโve certainly become more articulate,โ Janessa said with a detached smile. She wasn't angry; sheโd expected an unwelcome reception. She spoke directly. โI wonโt linger. I wanted to check on Dad, and thereโs something I need to discuss with him.โ
Cheryl retorted, โGive it a rest! I can see right through you. Youโre definitely up to no good!โ
Rupert, indifferent, said, โThereโs nothing more to discuss. Show her out.โ
โSure, Dad.โ
Janessa let out a cold laugh, ignoring Cheryl, focusing on Rupert. โDad, what I need to discuss is of utmost importance. It concerns our company. Are you sure you wonโt listen? I can leave, but if the company ends up in ruins, donโt blame me.โ
Cheryl defiantly walked away. Immediately, Rupert furrowed his brows. โWait!โ
โSince weโre already here, letโs clear things up before we leave.โ
A smug smile appeared on Janessaโs lips. She knew his primary concern was always the company. He would keep her around. This scenario perfectly exemplified her surmise.
Janessa turned, offering a composed smile. โDad, this involves confidential company information. I can share it, but I suggest we not discuss it in the presence of outsiders.โ
โWhat?โ
Cheryl, listening, realized the โoutsiderโ was herself. She instantly lost her temper. โLetโs get one thing straight, Janessa. This is my house. Dad and I manage the company, not you. Youโre the outsider here!โ
This despicable woman canโt distinguish between guest and host properly?
Janessa remained casual. โSure, whatever you say. But let me be clear, you canโt listen to this.โ
Cheryl was livid, wishing she could strangle Janessa.
Rupert, exasperated, blurted, โEnough already! Will this ever end?โ
