Chapter 412: Utterly Devious

Jillian, though less striking than Madelyn, was still quite elegant in her yellow chiffon evening gown, which complemented her fair skin. Her innocent smile belied a naive and carefree nature. After a shared glance and laugh, their outfits were finalized.

That evening, the business gathering began. Madelyn and Jillian followed Derek, their entrance captivating everyone with their stunning beauty. The woman in the green dress was particularly striking, possessing an enchanting, almost otherworldly beauty, yet radiating innocence and charm. Many men felt an irresistible attraction. Madelyn, however, remained oblivious to her own immense charm, initially merely curious as she scanned the crowd. Then, she spotted a familiar figure. "Isn't that Sebastian?" she exclaimed. "Is he here too?"

Madelyn's face lit up; she was about to rush off. "Jillian, wait here. I'll go find someone."

"Madelyn? Hey!"

Madelyn moved with incredible speed. Jillian could only watch. Relieved, Jillian saw Madelyn rush toward Sebastian. Madelyn, overjoyed, had sprinted over. If not for the crowd, she would have pounced on him. "Sebastian, why are you also here?"

Sebastian, initially surprised by her stunning appearance, saw her beaming face and pinched her cheek. "The business gathering specifically invited Lockhart Group; of course, I had to attend."

Madelyn chuckled softly. "It's so good to see you." She hooked her arm around his wrist and leaned against him. The scene, to some extent, seemed rather idyllic, drawing envious glances from onlookers.

Whenever he encountered acquaintances, Sebastian greeted them politely but didn't linger, as many sought to associate with Lockhart Group. Greeting everyone individually would take too long. Meanwhile, Derek, dancing with Jillian, spotted the couple. Seeing their affection, Derek and Jillian chuckled.

Derek then teased, "You beam like a blooming flower as soon as you see Sebastian! Show a little dignity! I never saw you smile so brightly with me. A daughter truly becomes part of another family after marriage!" Despite his words, Derek felt blissful. For a time, the mood remained upbeat.

At the banquet hall entrance, Janessa, impeccably dressed, arrived, hand in hand with Kieran. Since Hayden's military enlistment, Janessa had indirectly lost her support. Fortunately, Kieran came from a wealthy family and was Hayden's close friend, a golden opportunity Janessa didn't hesitate to seize. Their arrival drew awestruck glances. Joy filled Janessa's heart, a smile playing on her lips.

Upon seeing Madelyn and Sebastian, hand in hand, radiating bliss, her smile vanished. Janessa glared maliciously. "You despicable woman! Still the same despicable look!" Seeing Madelyn seemingly on cloud nine surprised Janessa. Madelyn's triumph ignited Janessa's jealousy and anger; Madelyn's improving life fueled Janessa's discontent, especially after repeatedly falling into Madelyn's traps. Janessa was fuming. "Well, Madelyn, since fate has brought us together..."

Janessa approached Derek. "Well, aren't you Mr. Thornton of Thornton Corporation?" Her intent was clear.

"Who are you?" Derek eyed them warily. The guests were all from prestigious families.

Janessa laughed heartily. "Important people forget easily! I used to be Madelyn's best friend, don't you remember me!" Turning to Madelyn, she said, "Madelyn, it's been a long time, hasn't it?"

"Janessa?" Madelyn was surprised, her brows furrowing. "What are you doing here?"

"Can't I be here if you are?" Janessa smiled unexpectedly. "No need to be hostile. I came for two reasons: to reminisce and to introduce you to someone." She pulled Kieran forward. "You all know him, right?"

Derek was momentarily speechless. "I don't know him." Madelyn and Jillian were disgruntled, unable to fathom Janessa's intentions.

Janessa laughed. "Oh, right... You haven't met formally, have you? What a shame. Kieran was supposed to be your son-in-law."

Derek frowned in confusion. "Son-in-law?" Instinctively protecting Madelyn, he said, "Miss, this is a public place. Mind your words! My daughter has never known this man, and she's married. Don't slander her!"

Derek initially thought Janessa implied an affair, infuriating him. Janessa laughed again. "Mr. Thornton, you've misunderstood. I'm not referring to the woman beside you. Surely you haven't forgotten your daughter Eunice?" Her smile was sinister.
