Chapter 374: A Life for a Life

โ€œIf you donโ€™t pay us back for our sonโ€™s life, our family will kill ourselves right here. Weโ€™ll bathe your Thornton Corporation in blood!โ€ the elderly couple shouted, their distress and frustration palpable.

This, of course, sent the media into a frenzy. Reporters swarmed the victim's family, bombarding them with questions.

โ€œHow did your husband pass away?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s all Thornton Corporationโ€™s fault!โ€ the woman screamed. โ€œIf it werenโ€™t for this damned company messing around with unstable projects, my husband wouldnโ€™t have been killed in the explosion! My poor husband was always diligent and hardworking. How could he have suffered such an undeserved fate? Even if I were to die today, Thornton Corporation must give us an explanation!โ€

Her gaze sharpened, brimming with ruthless determination.

Just then, Derek and Madelyn arrived.

Feeling helpless, Derek shouted, โ€œEveryone, please stay calm!โ€

Silence fell instantly.

Derek stepped forward. โ€œIโ€™m the chairman of Thornton Corporation. Are any of you relatives of the deceased employee?โ€

โ€œSo, youโ€™re in charge of this lousy company, huh? Iโ€™ll kill you!โ€ the woman yelled, pulling a fruit knife and lunging at Derek.

โ€œOh no!โ€

Shocked, Madelyn reacted instantly, delivering a flying kick that sent the woman sprawling. Seeing the knife fly away and her father safe, Madelyn rushed to help the woman up.

โ€œAre you okay?โ€

โ€œYou vile woman! Get lost!โ€ the woman spat, shoving Madelyn away. She then lashed out, โ€œIf it werenโ€™t for your meddling, my husband wouldnโ€™t have died! He was improving, but you insisted I go home to rest. Thatโ€™s why I wasnโ€™t at the hospital last night, and he died! Itโ€™s all your fault! Iโ€™ll kill you!โ€

The woman, berserk, unleashed a barrage of punches. Madelyn, unable to retaliate in time, endured several painful blows.

Even as Cyrus intervened, separating the two required considerable effort.

โ€œMadam, please calm down!โ€

โ€œCalm down? How do you expect me to calm down?โ€

Despite being pulled away, the woman raged, โ€œMy husband is dead! Heโ€™s not related to you, so itโ€™s easy for you to say โ€˜calm down.โ€™ But what am I supposed to do? My parents and children have lost their support. How can I stay calm? What right do you have to expect that of me?โ€

Cyrus sighed, trying to soothe her. โ€œI understand. Tell me, what will it take for you to forgive us?โ€

โ€œI want you to pay with your lives!โ€ she bellowed, pointing at Madelyn. โ€œMy husbandโ€™s death is because of this wretched woman! I want her to pay for her crime!โ€

โ€œNo way,โ€ Derek replied instantly, his anger evident. โ€œMy daughter didnโ€™t kill your husband. Getting her to pay with her life is out of the question. Of course, weโ€™ll take responsibility. If you have other suggestions for compensation, we can consider them.โ€

The womanโ€™s expression turned grim. Do they think they can buy my husbandโ€™s life?

Before she could argue further, her family members pulled her back. The elderly couple leaned close, coaxing her.

โ€œDonโ€™t be naive, my dear,โ€ the elderly woman said gravely. โ€œMy son is gone. Even if she paid with her life, what would you gain?โ€

โ€œAt least Iโ€™d vent my frustration!โ€ the woman thundered. โ€œAnd Sean could rest in peace knowing justice was served!โ€

Her father-in-law slapped her. โ€œNonsense! My son is dead. Heโ€™d worry most about us and his children. Do you think heโ€™ll rest in peace knowing we arenโ€™t doing well?โ€

โ€œButโ€”โ€

โ€œEnough!โ€ the elderly couple interrupted. They pushed their daughter-in-law aside and approached Derek.

โ€œSince youโ€™re offering compensation, weโ€™ll accept it. If the amount is sufficient to settle this peacefully, weโ€™ll act as if none of this happened,โ€ the elderly man stated bluntly.

Derek took a deep breath. โ€œIn that case, what amount are you seeking?โ€

The elders glanced at the reporters. โ€œLetโ€™s take this conversation inside,โ€ they suggested.

Derek ushered them into the building. They were soon seated in the reception room, each served coffee.

โ€œState your requests,โ€ Derek said solemnly. โ€œBut I have a condition. Iโ€™ll compensate your family, but you must stop. No more bringing this up, or fabricating stories. Can you do that?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry. If we settle this, weโ€™ll keep our word,โ€ the elderly man reassured.

Derek nodded. โ€œHow much do you want?โ€

โ€œFifty million,โ€ the elderly man said without hesitation.

Disbelief filled the room.

What? This old geezer is greedy!

Madelyn was about to speak, but Derek cut her off. โ€œAre you trying to extort us? Your son likely wouldnโ€™t earn ten million in a lifetime, let alone fifty.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s no way Iโ€™ll give you that much. Reconsider.โ€

The other party responded unreasonably. โ€œIsnโ€™t your company worth hundreds of millions? Whatโ€™s the big deal about fifty million?โ€
