Chapter 226 Favoritism Towards Her

After the words were spoken, both of them immediately charged at each other.

Sebastian and Phantomt, too, engaged in combat. Their moves were swift, ruthless, and precise. However, whenever one of them aimed for the other’s vital points, the other would skillfully dodge the strike.

Phantom was shocked to find Sebastian an equal match.

The following day was a weekend, and there were no classes in session. So, Madelyn took the day off.

After breakfast, Madelyn watched her father drink his medicine. Then, she cheerfully set off to see Sebastian.

Watching her antics, Derek remarked in a teasing tone, “Our Maddie has really grown up, hasn’t she? We can’t keep her to ourselves anymore. She’s only been in love for a few days and already so eager to leave!”

Madelyn blushed when she heard those words. She laughed and quipped, “Well, of course! Sebastian is such a catch. I must keep a close eye on him to stop anyone from stealing him away.”

Madelyn threw a pointed glance at Eunice who was standing next to her.

Eunice knew that those words were directed at her, and she rolled her eyes in annoyance.

Derek laughed at the obvious happiness on Madelyn’s face. “You little rascal,” he said, “You’ve always been so mischievous, and you never let anyone tell you what to do. Now, it seems you’ve taken a real liking to Sebastian. It’s a pity for me as a father. Poor me!”

“Dad, what are you talking about? You’ll always be my one and only dad,” Madelyn said comfortingly, laying her head on Derek’s shoulder.

Derek felt his heart swell with joy. However, moments later, he let out a sigh.

“Maddie, I’m actually worried about Thornton Corporation. After all, I’m getting older by the day, and there will come a time when I’m no longer able to work. When that time comes, the company will have to be handed over to you. So, whenever you have the time, remember to come back and visit your old man. Whilst my health still allows me to move around, you should shadow me and learn Thornton Corporation’s inner workings. It would be greatly beneficial.”

Hearing those words, Regina and Eunice became unsettled and started to protest.

“Grandpa, you can’t play favorites! Don’t forget that you have another daughter! What will happen to Eunice if you hand the entire company over to Madelyn?” Regina asked in a reproachful voice.

“That’s right, Dad! You can’t just focus on Madelyn all the time. I’m capable of running the company, too. Am I not your daughter as well?” Eunice added.

Derek felt a headache coming as he listened to their loud protest. “Eunice is still young, and she does not have much experience yet. Let’s revisit this matter after she’s had a few more years under her belt,” he said in a resigned tone.

“Dad!” Eunice became even more upset at his response.

At that moment, Madelyn felt torn.

She was not interested in taking over Thornton Corporation, and the mere mention of it bored her.

In her past life, it was this very issue that had caused a huge rift between her and her father.

In this present life, Madelyn knew that she could not afford to be disinterested.

If she did not take up the mantle, then Regina and Eunice certainly would. Thornton Corporation’s future would be uncertain in their hands.

Further, it hurt her to watch her father’s hair getting whiter day by day.

As the eldest daughter of the family, it was only right that she shouldered her responsibilities and did her best to ease her father’s worries.

In her past life, she had been too naive. It was only after she had been betrayed that she realized her own mistakes.

In this lifetime, she was determined not to make the same mistakes again!

With those thoughts running through her mind, Madelyn strengthened her resolve.

So, she obediently nodded and said in a determined voice, “Dad, how about I go with you to the office today? From now on, I’ll stick by your side and learn all I can about managing the company."

“Maddie, are you serious?” Derek was thrilled by her offer.

In her past life, whenever there was any mention of her taking over Thornton Corporation, Madelyn would immediately turn around and walk away.

However, in this present lifetime, she welcomed the idea.

Derek felt a sense of relief. He thought to himself, "This young lady seemed to have truly grown up quite a bit…"

Back then, Madelyn had always planned to work at the Lockhart Group after graduating so that she could spend all her days with Sebastian.

However, Madelyn has now changed her mind.

She now realized that, by managing Thornton Corporation well, she could be of assistance to Sebastian.

The color drained from Eunice’s face.

“Such blatant favoritism!” Eunice thought angrily to herself.

Eunice cursed her father and Madelyn over and over again in her heart.

Regina was not pleased either, but since Derek had already made up his mind, she chose not to say anything more.

Although Madelyn did not say anything, she silently observed everything. She knew that Regina was not as simple as she outwardly appeared.

If memory served her right, it was during this period in her past life that Regina began inserting personnel who were loyal to her into the Thornton Corporation.

Back then, within two years, Regina had virtually infiltrated the entire company and replaced all the existing staff with her own chosen people.

In this lifetime, Madelyn would do everything in her power to prevent such a thing from happening.

Beyond this, she had a lot more work to do. For instance, she needed to build relationships with the Thornton Corporation’s board members and establish her own network.

So, Madelyn gave up her plan to see Sebastian and accompanied her father to his office instead.

Madelyn rarely visited the company before this, but this time around, she was quite intrigued.

Throughout the entire morning, she stayed by her father’s side, sitting in on his meetings, and assisting him with various company matters. Safe to say, she was kept on her toes.

Madelyn finally realized just how challenging managing a company could be.

Behind the seemingly enviable position, the workload was overwhelming. Madelyn felt a surge of pride and admiration for her father.

At noon, Madelyn went over to rub her father’s shoulders. Each stroke was filled with tender affection and concern for his comfort.

Her father’s assistant smiled at the sight and remarked, “They often say that a daughter is her father’s comfort. It seems your daughter is truly a delight to you. However, it seems the Chairman will only heed your advice. Everyone has tried to persuade the Chairman to take a break, but he wouldn’t listen. Now that you’re here, the Chairman is finally agreeing to rest.”

It was clear that the assistant was genuinely devoted to Derek.

Upon hearing his words, Madelyn giggled. Suddenly, she proposed, “How about I intern here once I graduate?”

“Maddie, do you really mean that?” Derek asked in disbelief.

The assistant, too, wore a look of surprise.

“Yes, really!” Madelyn said earnestly, nodding her head. Then, with a small embarrassed laugh, she added, “As long as you don’t mind me causing trouble, Dad. After all, I don’t know anything. If you want to teach me how to manage the company, it’s probably going to take quite a bit of effort.”
