Chapter 95: Scam

Surprise etched across Gloria’s face, but she seemed to understand. “I thought you knew about that a long time ago,” she said.

As a wild thought struck me, all I could think about was Yvette. Why would I pay attention to anything else? Besides, this was my second chance at life, and I couldn’t remember much from before.

“Stop using Yvette to threaten me. She didn’t agree to the divorce,” I said lightly.

Gloria just dragged out the word “oh” in reply. Then, she asked, “Did she find you? She still doesn’t want to divorce you despite the circumstances. That means she really, really cares.”

I just smiled wryly. “Cares about me? Maybe she’s going to church every Sunday. She only cares about the man in the photo. I can’t handle threats at all, so I can only compromise with her.”

Gloria was silent for a while. “Hmm, unexpected.”

I remained calm and composed. All I wanted was to ask Gloria two questions.

“Are you a hacker? Did you break into Yvette’s company’s security defenses?”

“Mr. Yates, the Jennings and the Newmans might be business rivals, but breaking into a company’s security defenses is illegal. We’re a legal company, so we wouldn’t do such things. Besides, the Newmans can’t benefit from picking a fight with the Jennings,” Gloria explained.

“Then, perhaps the hacker was targeting someone with their malicious attacks,” I mused. I couldn’t understand the whole thing. Who on earth was that bold enough to hack into Yvette’s company’s computers and call everyone a “bitch”?

I asked again. “What’s the reward you want? I can’t give you anything but money. All of my organs are important to me, you know.”

Gloria suddenly laughed. “Mr. Yates, I don’t need those things, let alone money. Although I admit that I do have ulterior motives for accepting your case, what I really want is Key Anderson’s private number. I don’t want his work number.”

Stunned, I quickly asked, “Why do you want his private number?”

Gloria calmly waved a hand. “Don’t get too anxious. It’s just a contact number. What can I do with it?”

I thought about it for a moment. What she said made sense. If Key didn’t want to give Otocia his private number, he’d have tons of ways to deal with her. I’d just have to let him know that she wanted his number later.

So, I responded to Gloria’s inquiry. “Does this mean you don’t want to continue taking my case?”

Gloria remained impassive. “I don’t take cases that I don’t have confidence in winning. This could’ve been the only opportunity for us to be aggressive. But unfortunately, your wife…”

“Your interior background isn’t helping you one bit. If you really want a divorce, you have no easy way to get to it.”

“Pardon my asking, Mr. Yabe, but haven’t you found Yvette’s weaknesses? Since she cares about the man in the photo that much, and since you’re not interested in your position as her husband at all, why not entice that man to snatch that spot from you?”

After ending the call, I was momentarily stunned. Then, I sent a message to Benny, wanting his private number. I told him about that, along with the threat Yvette had made to divorce me again.

Kentry replied quickly this time. He told me that only a few people closest to him knew his private number. Outsiders could forget about getting to know him on an intimate level.

A thought occurred to me again. “Yvette really has crossed the line this time! Now that you’ve failed to get a divorce, what should you do? Could it be that she’s seriously in love with you?” I pondered dejectedly, “That’s impossible! She doesn’t like me at all! But honestly, divorce is more problematic than I thought.”

“I don’t want her money anyway. Money is a very sore subject to her. It’s almost impossible for me to get my hands on her assets before going through with the divorce.”

“But if I choose not to want anything, I have a method that might actually work in severing my ties with her. As long as my dad’s birthday banquet goes smoothly, nothing will pose a problem… as long as I get my hands on his money. Let’s just try that out.”

Yvette came, but it wasn't a telepathic connection. Of course, I’d know what her weak spot was—her family. Back then, she had merely agreed to marrying me because of her grandfather. Then again, those were her family members. She could divorce me, but she would give away some of her…

Bewildered, I muttered, “Why don’t we have unexpectedly…” I raised my head to look at the aureate sky. My wedding still tightly wound around my finger. For some reason, I mainly remembered the Yvette from my previous life. The Yvette from my previous life was way better. Although she was a bit brutal, at least she was willing to share me… The Yvette of the past was unlike the current Yvette, who was extremely stingy. Seriously, this was so…

…ending with Yvette’s life, how was it possible…?

Strangely enough, I didn’t end up visiting my uncle at the hospital tonight. Instead, I found myself at a steakhouse having some barbecue and beer.

As I drank, I looked through the flashcards. A different woman was printed on each and every card (I was thinking of choosing my next cheating partner. Of course, they couldn’t be ugly; I needed them to look good, after all. But those common women were nothing compared to Yvette). The more I looked at these cards, the deeper my frown became. I kept downing glasses of Benton one after another. Alcohol heated up my cranial nerves, making me feel woozy.

Artlessly, my phone… A low, polite and rather drowsy voice drifted from the other end of the phone. “Excuse me, are you Mr. Lowe then?”

I chose the best-looking woman from the pile of flashcards. With one hand propping up my flushed cheek, I was already looking extremely drunk. My mind was also…

“I’m from a real estate company. Alf Pusonders, for your villa located in Sollut Datadour. However, you’ve requested to send your assets, as well as your personal documents, to speed up the remaining procedures.”

“If you’re already married, you’ll need to bring a copy of your marriage certificate. That way, you’ll be able to get your property deeds.”

Solbert Destria? A spontaneous chuckle escaped me. Only the rich and influential got to own properties in Solbert District. Yvette, for one, lived in that area. I was as penniless as a church mouse. I wouldn’t be able to afford a house in the slums, let alone Solbert District.

Could it be that I had too much to drink and picked up a scam call instead?

“I’ve gotten the wrong number. Do I look like someone who can afford to buy a house here?”

The real estate agent sounded worried. “Mr. Yates, don’t hang up on me yet! Just come over to Solbest Street and deal with the procedures. Once that’s done, we’ll take you to look at the villa straight away. Or you could choose to look at the villa first! If you don’t like it, we can always swap out another villa for you. After all, your uncle has already cleared the payment. We can always give you a refund based on the villa’s pricing.”

What the hell! That agent even knew that I had an uncle. I was already in a terrible mood to begin with. Hearing the agent mentioning my uncle pissed me off even more. The cheapest villas in Soler District were worth at least nine figures. My uncle was poorer than me. How could he afford to clear the payment for a villa in full, let alone give me the authority to pick whichever villa I wanted? These scammers had no bottom line at all! They were just targeting the poor folks because they…

“You’ve really crossed the line this time! Who sold my private information to you, huh? Was it the hospital? Or was it the funeral home?”

“Can’t you at least be more realistic when you’re weaving stories for me? I can still stomach a typical job that offers a thousand dollars per month! Only fools would believe these scams about owning a villa!”
