Chapter 82: Slapping Yvette

Yvette cut me off before I could speak. She said icily, “I told you to stay at the hotel because I needed to talk to you when I got back. Why did you refuse to wait for me and be home with Lila?”

Yvette’s words from that night echoed in my mind; I shot her a look of confusion. What did she mean? Her side profile was breathtakingly beautiful. She was calm and composed. I couldn’t discern her emotions; her crisp, washing hand reached for something.

I felt her presence. Somehow, she looked like she didn’t want me there. “I came home because, first, I was done with my work, and secondly, Lili…”

I thought Yvette was using the discussion as an excuse to keep me away.

“I stayed. What was the thing you wanted to talk to me about? Was it important? Tell me now, then I’m…”

Lila. However, she looked like she really had something…

Yvette flashed me a soft smile. Staring at the computer screen, she considered my question, and said slowly, “Owen, you didn’t complete all the things I asked of you. Why didn’t you marry Lila in the first place if you lied to her so much and she made you laugh? Why did you choose to enter an arranged marriage with me, a loathsome woman with a sharp tongue?”

Yvette might be sarcastic, but I had fallen hard for her. It was love at first sight. Anyway, I would never admit that I loved her.

I gritted my teeth and endured her torrent of accusations. “Do you really have to bring up the past? What else can I do now that I’m married? I can get a divorce and set things right, though.”

“Take your point. Tell me what you tried to tell me at the hotel? If not, I’ll proceed.”

Yvette remained motionless. That woman knew how to play mind games.

I pushed three sets of divorce papers to her side of the table. “I’ve prepared three sets of divorce papers on purpose. In the first version, I will take nothing from you in exchange for you paying for my uncle’s medical treatments. In the second version, you will pay me a million dollars and provide me with a letter of recommendation from a top candidate lawyer. In the third version, you pay me 20 million dollars, and we’re even. I won’t be in your life anymore. Pick any one of these and sign it. I have all the required documents with me since you…”

“I promise that we’ll go separate ways after the divorce. I will not show up to sign it when we head over to the courthouse.”

Knowing Yvette was a picky woman, I got everything ready. Now that she was back in the country, I assumed she had already realized her feelings for me, and according to the timeline of her past life…that she would agree to my decision to divorce. Besides, I didn’t make outrageous demands.

We sat silently. Her gaze swept past the three agreements. She reached out to grab the papers right as I was about to urge her to sign them.

Before I could react, she tore them to pieces with disdain, just as she did to the agreement last time. Her soft hands crumpled the shreds and tossed them into the bin with great force.

My mind went blank. Then, I shot up from my seat and yelled at her, “Yvette Jennings, what’s that supposed to mean? Are you not going to get a divorce?”

She finally looked in my direction. Her voice was filled with contempt. “Well, I’m not.”

Anger exploded in my chest. I nearly fainted from the emotions. Grabbing her collar, I hissed, “But why? I thought you promised to get a divorce once we were done with the partnership…”

She didn’t put up a fight. With a smirk, she said, “There won’t be a divorce.” She chuckled. “I did say that we’ll get a divorce after we are done with the partnership, but the partnership has gone down the drain now, which…”

“What’s that? That’s none of my fucking business!” My eyes nearly popped out from their sockets in anger as I tightened my grip on her collar.

My voice went hoarse as I yelled, “You terminated the partnership for Randall Caldwell! I did my job, and you signed the agreement with the UK Group. How could you claim that the partnership has gone down the drain?”

Yvette Jennings, don’t play games with me. You’re impossible. I have the digital version of the divorce papers with me. Print them out now and get them signed. After that, I’m done with you!” I suppressed my anger and scrolled through my phone for the document.

Suddenly, I felt a sharp pain in my arm as her icy voice hit my eardrum. “I told you that I’m not getting a divorce.”

A second later, my temper flared, and I slapped her in the face. Her face turned sideways from the impact, and a red mark appeared on her cheek.

She grunted, “You sure are angry at me after I stopped you from getting together with Lila. I will stand in your way, then. Why don’t you lay another finger on me…”

I slapped her again while she was speaking. Losing my mind, I roared, “Yvette Jennings, you’re a shameless bitch! Do not mention Lila’s name. You’re not worthy of that…”

“Guys who fell in love with you must be blind. You’re an ungrateful, emotional woman who doesn’t keep her word. You’re despicable!”

I was reprimanding both Yvette and myself. I couldn’t believe I had been infatuated with her in my past life, thinking she was sexy, seductive, talented, and chaste. I went crazy for her and lost myself in her.

Only when I no longer viewed her through rose-tinted glasses did I discover her arrogance, heartlessness, and shamelessness. I would not want to take even one more look at the despicable woman. My rage clouded over. She stared straight at me with anger.

I was about to slap her again, but she grabbed my arm to stop me. She walked around the table and stood on tiptoe in front of me. In the next moment, she sealed my lips with a kiss, forcing my words back into my throat.

I sensed a metallic tang in my throat. How could she do this to me?

I shoved her away and wiped my lips with the back of my hand with a disgusted look. “Yvette Jennings, you shouldn’t treat me this way. Did I wrong you in any way? You didn’t love me, and you cheated on me…”

“You agreed to a divorce, but you’re going against your word and kissing me. Bitch, does it hurt you to set me free? I do not want to have anything more to do with you. You annoy me!”

I had loved Yvette for many years, especially in my past life, where I wholeheartedly gave her my entire heart. I might have let down many people in my past life, but Yvette was certainly not one of them.

Now that I had been reborn, I did want to seek revenge against her. I wanted to set my boundaries and have nothing to do with her so that I could start a new life.

So, why was Yvette refusing to let me go? Why was she pulling me deeper into her life and inflicting more torture on me?

Drowning in a strong feeling of hatred, I couldn’t help but display my emotions on my face.

Yvette paused for a moment; her expression crumpled. “Do you find me that annoying?”
