Chapter 33 Looks Like Tildaโ€™s Doomed

The title of being the first person to ever beat Shaunโ€™s program still stuck to Wade like a badge. He knew better than anyone how insanely complicated that program was. And every single year, Shaun updated it, making it different. So, trying to copy what worked before wouldnโ€™t work. Back when Wade had passed, it was right at the one-hour deadline. And honestly, luck had helped him, too. That was why Wade knew this challenge was brutal. It was pretty much impossible. If it were anyone else, Wade wouldnโ€™t even care.

But this timeโ€ฆ it was Tilda. And suddenly, his feelings were all tangled. He didnโ€™t even know if he wanted her to pass or fail.

Of course, Clive wasnโ€™t going to let such a chance slip by. He nudged Wade with a grin. โ€œSo? Think your sister can actually do it?โ€

โ€œHow would I know?โ€

โ€œOh, come on. You would know. Youโ€™re the only one whoโ€™s ever passed. You know exactly how hard it is.โ€

Wade paused for a while before he finally said, his voice steady, โ€œSheโ€™s not gonna make it.โ€

โ€œDamn, Wade. Thatโ€™s cold. Itโ€™s not like you. Even if you two arenโ€™t close anymore, sheโ€™s still your blood.โ€

Wade shot him a sharp glare. โ€œDonโ€™t be stupid. If I went back to sophomore year and tried Professor Manningโ€™s program again, Iโ€™d only give myself 60% odds. You need both skill and luck. And sure, Tildaโ€™s attitude has changed a lot lately, but her actual IQ and coding skills couldnโ€™t have magically leveled up overnight.โ€

Cliveโ€™s eyes lit up with mischief. His lips curled. โ€œThen wanna bet? Youโ€™re convinced she canโ€™t pass, so Iโ€™ll bet she can. The loser owes the other a month of lunches. Home-cooked. Deal?โ€

โ€œLame.โ€

โ€œSo, you in or not?โ€

โ€œFine.โ€

To Wade, this was basically free food. Thereโ€™s no way Tilda is gonna make it.

Meanwhile, Kyla couldnโ€™t resist sneaking near Tildaโ€™s classroom. She tucked herself into a quiet corner in the hallway, staying out of sight.

11:19 AM

From there, she could see groups of students crowding outside the room. And of course, everyone was talking about whether Tilda would pass the ultimate test.

โ€œDo you all think sheโ€™s actually gonna succeed?โ€

โ€œMaybe. Back in freshman year, she was at the top of our class.โ€

โ€œAnd now sheโ€™s with the Jensons. Maybe Wade even taught her a few tricks.โ€

โ€œYeah, Wadeโ€™s the only one whoโ€™s ever cleared it. And look at Tilda nowโ€”walking around like sheโ€™s confident. She must have something planned.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s wild. She was all quiet one minute, then suddenlyโ€”boom, turns out sheโ€™s the real Jenson daughter. Talk about rags to riches.โ€

โ€œI saw Wade and Kyla riding to campus together this morning. I didnโ€™t see Tilda, though. What do you think that means?โ€

โ€œWhat else? The fake daughter was keeping the spot warm, but now the real oneโ€™s back. Guess whoโ€™s about to get replaced?โ€

Laughter broke out.

Hidden in her corner, Kylaโ€™s face burned. Fake daughter? Replaced?

No. I AM the Jensonsโ€™ daughter. Iโ€™ve always been, and I always will be. Nobody can take that away. The one who will be pushed out isnโ€™t meโ€”itโ€™s Tilda.

If this had been before, Kyla wouldnโ€™t have been worried. She wouldโ€™ve thought Tilda taking Shaunโ€™s challenge was just her being cocky. Even Wade had barely passed, so what chance did Tilda have? But lately, Tildaโ€™s whole vibe had shifted in ways Kyla couldnโ€™t explain. So the second she heard the news, she found herself sneaking over, almost without thinking.

Please, please fail, Tilda. If she succeeded, people would compare them. And Kyla couldnโ€™t stand the thought of that shame.

Just then, the classroom door opened. Una came out, head hanging low. Right away, classmates rushed up to ask.

โ€œNope,โ€ Una sighed. โ€œProfessor Manningโ€™s program is way too tough. I didnโ€™t even know where to start.โ€

Everyone gasped. Una was always one of the best students. She was easily in the top three in the class. And if she couldnโ€™t solve it and gave up that fast, that just showed how cruel the challenge really was.

Looks like Tildaโ€™s doomed.

โ€œYeah, thereโ€™s only one hour. Itโ€™s already been 40 minutes.โ€

11:19 AM

โ€œExactly. If it were easy, Wade wouldnโ€™t still be the only one who ever passed.โ€

Unaโ€™s temper snapped. โ€œHey! Donโ€™t talk crap! Tilda can totally do it!โ€

Everyone knew how close Una and Tilda were. And seeing her this mad, they all shut up quick.

But Kyla saw everything.
