Chapter 298

Once they were gone, the party hall erupted into a flurry of heated discussions.

A guest said, โ€œI thought Ms. Miller looked familiar before, but after what Mr. Carr saidโ€ฆ she does resemble herโ€ฆโ€

Another guest scoffed, โ€œResembles who? Aubreeโ€™s way prettier than that woman. If anything, itโ€™s that woman who looks like her.โ€

A guest whispered, โ€œWait, so Bowen and Kurtis had a falling out over a woman back then?โ€

Another guest chimed in, โ€œThatโ€™s not how it was. I heard they were just business partners. As for Cordelia Vought, wasnโ€™t it all just a one-sided crush on her part?โ€

โ€œOh, who cares what kind of status Cordelia had? She was Mr. Carrโ€™s sweetheart. Does anything else even matter? Havenโ€™t you noticed? Over the past few years, anyone who even slightly resembles her has been given a big break.โ€

Aubree trailed behind, her mind racing. From what Kurtis had just said, it wasnโ€™t hard to figure out she resembled someone, and that person seemed to be at the center of a falling-out between Bowen and Kurtis.

Soโ€ฆ

Aubree narrowed her eyes. Was Bowenโ€™s inexplicable kindness to me from the beginning because of this?

โ€œThe classic stand-in trope?โ€

A cold, mocking laugh echoed in her mind as her gaze on Bowenโ€™s back turned sharp and dangerous. โ€˜Youโ€™d better not be playing this game with me, Bowen. Otherwiseโ€ฆ just try me!โ€™

Bowenโ€™s eyelid twitched inexplicably, a wave of unease washing over him.

โ€œWord around Rithol City is that Ms. Millerโ€™s success is all thanks to you, Mr. Turner, the most successful investor. Am I wrong?โ€ said Kurtis.

Kurtis flashed a smile. Had it not been for the biting sarcasm lacing his words, one might almost think he was genuinely praising them both.

โ€œIโ€™ve got great taste,โ€ Bowen replied with a confident grin, accepting the compliment without hesitation.

Aubree rolled her eyes. โ€˜Please, that was all me.โ€™

They entered the private room. As the door closed, Bowen paused mid-step. โ€œOh, right, I havenโ€™t properly introduced you to Mr. Carr yet.โ€

โ€œThis is Aubree Miller, founder of Bree Technology and my girlfriend.โ€

โ€œSo, to answer your first question today, sheโ€™s not just familiar. Sheโ€™s etched permanently in my memory.โ€

Then, he reached out and pulled Aubree, who had been standing just behind Kurtis, firmly into his embrace. Locking eyes with Kurtis in a silent battle of wills, Bowen was unmistakably staking his claim.

Kurtisโ€™s mask of civility began to crack. He thought, โ€˜Girlfriend?! Alice never told me that.โ€™

โ€˜No way. How could Bowen possibly have a girlfriend?โ€™

The smile slid off Kurtisโ€™s face, his eyes glinting with menace. He seized Bowen by the collar and snarled, โ€œYouโ€™re dating? How dare you? What gives you the right?"

โ€œCordelia died for you! You belong to her!โ€

Aubree was utterly bewildered. โ€˜What the hell is going on here?โ€™ she thought.

Bowen looked genuinely confused and asked, โ€œWhoโ€™s Cordelia?โ€

Aubree shrugged Bowenโ€™s hand off. โ€œWho else? Your old flame, obviously,โ€ she scoffed.

She crossed her arms and stepped aside. โ€œMr. Carr, could you calm down for a moment?

โ€œSort out your old grudges yourselves. Honestly, I donโ€™t even care why you dragged me to this party. But give me Gordonโ€™s information.

โ€œAs for us,โ€ she shot Bowen a glare, โ€œweโ€™ll settle this later!โ€

That last line was for Bowen, who raised his hands in mock surrender. โ€œAs you wish, my girlfriend.โ€

Aubreeโ€™s nose twitched. โ€˜Did someone spray perfume in here? It smells so sweetโ€ฆ Almost too sweet,โ€™ she wondered.

Kurtis finally released Bowen, his eyes wide with disbelief. โ€œYou donโ€™t remember her? How could you not remember Cordelia? She died because of you!โ€

His fists clenched, knuckles white with anger, as he continued, โ€œWhen you were expanding your business in Kroit City, you stayed for two years. You were kidnapped. It was because of her that you walked away unscathed!โ€

โ€œYeah, I was targeted for kidnapping,โ€ Bowen said. โ€œBut do you think the people Iโ€™ve got on my payroll are just sitting around doing nothing? I got tipped off early and deliberately avoided the route those kidnappers were staking out.โ€

โ€œThen why did you leave Kroit City the very next day?โ€ Kurtis demanded, his voice sharp with accusation.
