Chapter 203
Vincent wasted no time and set up a meeting with Anthony the very next day. Magnus, now idle and spending his days playing with his dogs at home, was surprised to hear Aubree wanted to see him.
As a veteran of the Wilson Group, he knew all the dirty laundry of the Wilson family. Stroking his chin, he considered that this might just be an opportunity for him.
Aubree was no small fry now. Ronald was pulling out all the stops to win her over. If the Wilsons had no regard for loyalty, then why should he?
Vincent booked a private dining room in advance.
When they met, Anthony acted oblivious, stuffing his face with food and downing drinks as if this were nothing more than a casual meal.
Aubree wasnโt in a hurry. She let him eat his fill.
She intended to use Anthony to pit him against Ronald, but she had no plans to protect him. A scumbag like him deserved to pay for what heโd done.
Once the plates were cleared, Anthony wiped his mouth.
Aubree smiled. โEnjoyed the meal, Mr. Carr? We can order more if youโd like. I didnโt realize life after leaving Wilson Group had been soโฆ difficult for you.โ
Anthonyโs face darkened. โIs she mocking me for being broke after getting kicked out?โ
She wasnโt entirely wrong, though. Ever since Emery kicked him out of the company, all his former bootlickers had scattered like roaches, terrified of being associated with him.
Anthony couldnโt tell if Aubree was being deliberately provocative or just naรฏve.
โForget it,โ Anthony thought. โIโm above this, no point in arguing.โ
โNo need for โMr. Carr.โ Youโre practically my niece. Just call me Anthony.โ
Aubree chuckled but didnโt take the bait. โLetโs keep this professional. What do you think of Rosepoly Group these days?โ
โWhat do you mean by that?โ As soon as the conversation turned serious, Anthony, ever the seasoned player in the cutthroat business world, immediately slipped into diplomatic mode.
โLet me be blunt. Iโm taking down Rosepoly Group. Iโd bet youโve got plenty of dirt on them. The enemy of my enemy is my friend, right? You worked for Wilson Group your whole life, yet they never gave you a single share. Then, when you took what you deserved, they tossed you out for some spoiled brat.
Doesnโt that piss you off?
โIf the Wilsons have no shame, why should anyone play nice?โ
Anthony thought bitterly, โAubreeโs words really hit home. If Ronald had just cut me in on some shares, would I have had to hit home?โ
Anthony downed his drink in one gulp. โWhatโs in it for me?โ
โThe Wilsons wonโt pay you, but I will.
โName your price.โ
Anthony lowered his gaze, offering neither acceptance nor refusal. โWhat do you want?โ
โI need you to testify when Loganโs family exposes Wilson Group. And I want proof of their tax evasion.โ Aubreeโs tone left no room for negotiation.
The first demand was expected. The second made Anthonyโs pupils shrink.
โHow did youโฆโ He cut himself off.
Aubree smirked. โNo need to panic. If Iโm bringing it up, I already know enough.โ
In her past life, the workerโs death alone hadnโt been enough to shake the Wilsons. It was the subsequent investigation that uncovered billions in tax fraud. That was what sent them scrambling.
And in the end? Ronald had thrown Anthony to the wolves as the fall guy.
Anthonyโs expression darkened, hesitation flickering. โFine. Iโll do it. For $50 million.โ
โAubreeโs just a rookie. What does she know about business?โ Anthony thought smugly, โI can agree now. Once Rosepoly Group runs into real trouble and Emery canโt fix it, Iโll just apply a little pressure. Then Ronald will be begging on his knees to have me back!โ
Anthony agreed. Aubree raised her cup in a toast. โDeal!โ
Once Anthony left, Vincent stepped in, frowning. โCan we really trust him?โ
Even if Anthony resented the Wilsons, would he actually help them? 50 million was a lot, but to someone like him, it wasnโt life-changing.
Aubree narrowed her eyes. โOf course, he wonโt be completely on our side, but that doesnโt matter. All I need is for him to say one thing in public.โ
โAnd the moneyโฆโ
โWeโll pay him, but not through traceable channels.โ
Vincent winced. โFifty million for one sentence?โ
Aubree laughed at his expression. โLet him take the money. Whether he lives to spend it is another matter.โ
Things moved quickly. Aubreeโs team soon found Loganโs parents.
In Bree Technologyโs lounge, Birgitte brought in tea and pastries. โPlease have some coffee. Would you like cake, sweetheart?โ
Three people sat on the sofa, simply dressed but neatly put together.
They appeared extremely uneasy, barely perched on the edge of the sofa. Caleb, his face deeply lined with wrinkles, asked in a trembling voice, โYoung ladyโฆ is what you said earlier really true? Can you really get justice for my son?
โMy poor sonโฆ All he wanted was to earn enough to give his children a better life, and it cost him everything. We donโt care about the money. My grandchildren just want their father back. But that daughter-in-law of oursโฆ She took their blood money and let it go.โ
As they spoke, Loganโs parents couldnโt hold back their tears.
Loganโs daughter, Madelyn, lifted her small, grimy face and said, โI donโt want cake. I want Daddy.โ
Birgitteโs heart clenched. Sheโd known the family suffered, but she never imagined it would be so heartbreakingโฆ
โDonโt worry, Loganโs death wonโt be swept under the rug. At the very least, those responsible will pay the price,โ Aubree said firmly as she entered with two lawyers.
โIโm Aubree Miller, CEO of Bree Technology. These are my lawyers.โ
The elderly couple was astonished that someone so young could already be the CEO of such a prominent company. Yet their amazement soon turned to concern. Why would Aubree help them? And at her age, could she really do it?
Maggie tugged Aubreeโs sleeve. โReally? Will the bad people be punished?โ
Aubree glanced down at the little girlโs hands, rough and darkened from labor, chapped with chilblains, her clothes threadbare against the cold. Without hesitation, she took Maggieโs hand. โItโs true. While youโre in Rithol City, Iโll cover all your living expenses. But Iโm not doing this out of kindness. I just have a score to settle with Rosepoly Group.โ
Her bluntness oddly reassured the grandparents. Theyโd already resolved to fight, even at the cost of their lives.
โWeโll do whatever it takes, as long as our son can finally rest in peace!โ
โItโs not that extreme,โ Aubree said calmly, turning to the lawyers sheโd brought with her.
The two lawyers, quick on the uptake, explained, โMr. and Mrs. Berry, thereโs a legal complication with your sonโs case. Your daughter-in-law accepted compensation and signed a waiver. Since this involves a death, charges can still be filed, but the punishment may be reduced.โ
โUnless,โ the other added, โthis becomes too big to ignore.โ
