Chapter 136

As he spoke, he kept stealing glances at Bowen. โ€˜Bowen in the flesh!โ€™ he thought excitedly. โ€˜Big shots from Rithol City would kill for a meeting like this, and here I am, not just meeting him, but sharing a damn table. Hell yeah, Iโ€™m gonna brag about this for life.โ€™

Alvin, who was constantly around Bowen, couldnโ€™t fathom why his teammates were making such a big deal.

โ€œHeโ€™s just a regular guy. Whatโ€™s the big deal about him coming to dinner?โ€ Alvin scoffed.

Even as the captain, Alvin faced relentless backlash the moment those words left his mouth.

ADC and Abe rolled their eyes at Alvin. โ€œYeah, yeah, we all know youโ€™re Bowenโ€™s nephew. Could you stop flexing already?โ€

Alvin just gave them a deadpan look, as if to say, โ€œSeriously?โ€

The new midsolo, Van Helsing, nodded in agreement and joked, โ€œCome on, Mr. Turner, have mercy on us peasant players, will you?โ€

Bowen smiled politely.

Alvin rolled his eyes and teased in his heart, โ€˜Such a damn show-off.โ€™

There are perks to putting on an act, though. After all, Bowen does have an air of sophistication, and this little display instantly sent the club membersโ€™ admiration for Aubree soaring to new heights.

โ€œJokes aside, letโ€™s talk business,โ€ Aubree said.

Her expression turned serious as she looked around. โ€œSo, what did you guys think about todayโ€™s match?โ€

Apex Squadโ€™s performance was masterfully deceptive. They threw key teamfights to give up advantages, and they performed normally most of the time. Alvinโ€™s team was solid too, and they capitalized on those openings to take the match.

As soon as Aubree brought it up, Alvinโ€™s face clouded over. โ€œDo they take us for idiots?โ€ he spat.

โ€˜Maybe the audience canโ€™t tell,โ€™ he thought, โ€˜but as their opponents, how could we not notice? Honestly, this is the most humiliating win Iโ€™ve ever had!โ€™

The others didnโ€™t look much happier either. Sure, a win was a win, but being handed victory like this felt like a slap in the face.

Bowen knew they were discussing Apex Squadโ€™s blatant match-throwing, but he chose not to comment. Instead, he quietly focused on Aubreeโ€™s favorite dishes, meticulously preparing and placing portions on her plate.

โ€œBut Killian didnโ€™t seem to be throwing the match,โ€ Hector suddenly said.

The others nodded in agreement.

โ€œAt least heโ€™s got some competitive spirit,โ€ someone added.

Killianโ€™s departure from Godโ€™s Fury was quite a messy affair, but his competitive drive never wavered.

He joined Apex Squad back then because he felt heโ€™d hit a ceiling with Godโ€™s Fury. Knowing they couldnโ€™t win the finals, he figured he might as well trade one unwinnable match for a shot at future championship glory.

โ€œIt was probably Emeryโ€™s idea,โ€ Aubree said, rubbing her temples with a sigh.

โ€œAlright, alright. No point overthinking it. Itโ€™s not like we forced Apex Squad to throw. If anything goes wrong, weโ€™re the victims here,โ€ Leroy, the top laner, said, raising his drink. โ€œNow, letโ€™s toast to our first victory!โ€

Because they had matches coming up, nobody touched any alcohol.

Hector and the others still had to head back to the team base for a post-match debrief, and Alvin was going with them.

โ€œSo, Iโ€™ll head back first.โ€ Aubree glanced at Bowen. With just the two of them left, the atmosphere suddenly felt completely different.

โ€œOkay, can you get back on your own? I need Zachary for something,โ€ Bowen said. Zachary, standing off to the side, hesitated, wanting to speak but holding back. Bowen immediately understood that Zachary had something to say.

โ€˜Since Zachary didnโ€™t say it upfront, that means either he couldnโ€™t, or he wasnโ€™t sure if Aubree should hear those things,โ€™ Bowen thought.

โ€œOf course, heโ€™s always been your man,โ€ Aubree replied.

The moment Aubree left, Zachary immediately reported the incident to Bowen.

He said, โ€œAubree and I both got physical with Jacob. Knowing what heโ€™s like, I doubt heโ€™ll just let this go.โ€

โ€œJacob?โ€ Bowen snorted coldly. โ€˜For Jacquelineโ€™s sake, I used to let it slide when Jacob dropped my name around town. But to lay a hand on my people? Does he think Iโ€™m dead and buried?โ€™

โ€œForget about him. Just focus on keeping Bree safe. Go along with what sheโ€™s doing. If anyone ends up maimed or in the hospital, thatโ€™s all on me,โ€ Bowen said, his eyes ruthless.
