Chapter 50

I was Jonathan’s legitimate wife, yet they treated me as invisible, even though I sat right in front of them. Everyone was busy fawning over Alicia. It was clear that keeping Alicia happy was the only way to remain in Jonathan’s good graces. Even outsiders knew Alicia was Jonathan’s true priority. Calling myself his wife felt like a cruel joke; I had never felt so powerless.

But I didn't understand. Why wouldn't Jonathan divorce me?

Boenda eagerly held Alicia's hand. Alicia glanced at Jonathan and pressed her lips together. As always, she played the role of the mature one, nodding and saying, “I’m feeling much better now. The doctors said it might not even leave a scar.”

Brenda sighed. “Even so, you should take care. A pretty face is important for a woman.”

Alicia nodded, and Brenda gazed at her affectionately. “I’ve watched you all grow up. If Fred ever gives you trouble, come to me. I’ll make sure to set him straight. I’ve always treated you like my own daughter, Alicia.”

Alicia sat sweetly beside Jonathan, displaying the grace of a proper young lady throughout the conversation. "Thanks a lot," she said. Frederick snorted from the side. Jeffrey couldn't stand it and scolded him, “Look at you. You have no manners and just keep wasting time on that stupid bar of yours. Why can’t you be more like Jonathan?”

“Jonathan is the example you should all aspire to. I’d be happy if the rest of you were even half as good.”

Frederick's expression darkened. “Why the hell are you comparing me to him?”

Jeffrey grunted, “You’re right. I shouldn’t compare you to him because he’s way out of your league.” He was relentlessly criticizing Frederick. At that moment, I understood why Frederick had become so rebellious.

Brenda quickly intervened, holding Alicia’s hand. “Fred was in the wrong. I’ve already spoken to him.” She looked slightly hesitant. “Can you just let Fred off the hook this time, for my sake?”

Alicia hesitated, stealing a glance at Jonathan. She wouldn't speak unless Jonathan prompted her.

Seeing this, Jeffrey pulled Frederick before Jonathan. “Say sorry to her.”

Frederick looked furious. “I won’t. I’d rather die than apologize to her.” He turned and walked away. As he passed me, he glanced my way; his expression was complex, a faint red glint in his eyes.

I watched his resolute figure leave, unable to articulate my feelings. I didn't look away until he disappeared down the hallway. However, when I turned, I saw Jonathan staring at me intently. Her gaze was cold, and I knew she had seen how I looked at Frederick.

I felt a fleeting pang of guilt, but it vanished quickly. I met Jonathan’s gaze directly. “What?”

He had flaunted his relationship with Alicia openly, so what if I had been friendly with Frederick? If he couldn't handle it, he should have divorced me.

I shot Jonathan a defiant look, but he didn't flinch. He withdrew his gaze and turned to Alicia. “Forgive him if you wish. It’s entirely up to you.”

Jonathan truly pampered Alicia.
