Chapter 154

At that moment, all my emotions turned ice-cold. I looked Jonathan in the eyes and said, “There’s nothing I’m hiding from you. Everything I do happens right under your nose. What could I possibly hide?”

Jonathan didn’t respond. He just kept staring at me with the same unreadable look. His grip was starting to hurt, so I shoved him. “Let go of me!”

“Answer me—why did you forget about the tattoo?”

His finger pressed against the mark on my shoulder, rubbing it roughly. His fingertip was calloused, the texture grazing my skin in a way that sent a strange, involuntary shiver down my spine.

I took a deep breath, and my knees nearly gave out. Jonathan wrapped his arm tightly around my waist, keeping me upright. “Answer me.”

“I didn’t forget! I just didn’t want to remember!”

I looked him straight in the eyes and raised my voice. “I told you already that I want a divorce. I don’t have feelings for you anymore. So, why the hell would I want to remember a tattoo like that? I’m going to get it removed anyway!”

Before I could finish, Jonathan bit down hard on my lip, anger flaring in his eyes. For the first time, I saw real rage in him, like he was ready to burn me to ashes.

“Don’t you dare.” He finally spat the words out.

“Why wouldn’t I dare? It’s my tattoo. I have every right to get rid of it!” I shot back.

Jonathan didn’t answer. He just reached up and brushed his fingers slowly along the corner of my mouth. His expression was hard to read. He stared at me for a long moment before finally saying, “You know what, Elise? Whenever you’re lying or trying to hide something, you always raise your voice.”

“That’s not true! You’re full of it!” I yelled without thinking. “Who do you think you are? Do you think you know me that well?”

Jonathan didn’t respond. He just kept his eyes on me, and suddenly, I realized he was right. I had raised my voice just now, trying to cover something up. I immediately shut my mouth and lowered my head. I hadn’t even realized I had that kind of tell.

Chapter 154 (continued)

Soon, I steadied my voice and said calmly, “So? What are you trying to say?”

“What happened to you? You’re not the same as before,” Jonathan asked quietly. He stared at me like he was trying to figure out what had changed.

I let out a cold laugh, suddenly shoved him away, and took a step back. I nearly stumbled. Jonathan instinctively reached out to steady me, but I jerked away, choosing to lean against the wall instead of touching him.

“Didn’t you always hate how clingy I was? Didn’t you get sick of me always following you around? Well, I’m not doing that anymore. Isn’t that what you wanted? I’ve let you go, so let me go too!”

Jonathan stayed silent, his expression unreadable. After a long pause, he said, “That’s not what I meant…”

“Then what did you mean? Everyone knows you’re tired of me. You give Alicia everything she wants, but me, your wife, I’ve been nothing but a placeholder. You were disgusted with me. You didn’t even want to look at me. Isn’t that what you wanted?”

Jonathan couldn’t say a word. After what felt like forever, he finally muttered, “I never hated you, and I never once wanted a divorce.”

“Is that so? Well, I do.” I looked him dead in the eyes. “Let’s get a divorce, Jonathan. Please, let me go. If we keep going like this, it’s going to destroy both of us.”

Later, I lay on the bed, numb from head to toe. The sound of running water echoed faintly from the bathroom. I closed my eyes, completely drained. That was close. Just now, Jonathan had nearly figured something out, but I managed to cover it up. I wasn’t sure I’d get that lucky again. I had to get this divorce finalized before he discovered the truth about my memory loss.
