Chapter 122

At that moment, the look of concern in his eyes almost made me believe that he truly cared about me.

However, that illusion only lasted for a second. I quickly pushed the thought away; I was just being foolish again.

Jonathan didn’t even care whether I lived or died. How could he possibly care about a wound on my wrist?

I bit down hard on my lip and said nothing.

“Where does it hurt? Tell me,” he suddenly demanded.

Before I could answer, the faint scent of blood filled the air.

He suddenly froze, staring at my wrist, which was still wrapped in gauze with a scarf. I didn’t think he would see it.

Regret hit me. I hadn’t expected him to return tonight, so I hadn’t bothered disguising it well.

“Did you ask Hugh for the first-aid kit because you were injured?”

I nodded, trying to brush it off. “I accidentally burned myself, so I just wrapped it up with some gauze."

Jonathan stared at me in silence. There was doubt in his gaze; he clearly didn’t believe me.

A moment later, he suddenly leaned in close to my lips and said, “Let me take a look.”

I instinctively pulled back, raising a defensive barrier. “No need. It’s really nothing serious…”

I pushed him away with my other hand, and Jonathan didn’t push further. Instead, he kissed me gently from behind my ear, down to my neck.

Revulsion washed over me in waves. All I wanted was to get away from the overwhelming intimacy that suffocated me.

Then, suddenly, I felt his grip loosen on my wrist. He was trying to unwrap my gauze.

“What are you doing?”

I pushed him away sharply and struggled to sit up.

Jonathan ignored my resistance and pinned me back against the headboard. “If it’s just a burn, why would you need so much gauze?” he asked, looking at me.

He could tell something was off, but I didn’t want him to find out the truth, so I just tried to bluff my way out.

He seemed to sense that, too, and his expression darkened further.

When he finally saw the blood seeping through the gauze, his expression shifted.

“Elise…” he murmured.

I bet he had already figured out where the wound came from. There was no other reason for such a deep cut, unless it…

He always thought I was just playing the victim, so he never believed the wound was real.

His expression darkened as he slowly unwrapped the gauze, only to find it soaked through with blood.

When he finally saw the deep gash on my skin, his eyes widened in shock. Is a suicide attempt.

I looked at him coldly, swallowing the pain as I yanked my hand away. “Are you happy now that you’ve seen it for yourself?”

A storm raged in his eyes as he asked, “Are you serious? Who gave you permission to try to kill yourself?”

His words were utterly ridiculous. Did he really think my life belonged to him, that even taking my own life required his permission?

His anger was like a flare trying to burn me through, but I remained calm, staring straight into his eyes. “Do you even care about me? You just stood there and watched me drown!”

My words hit him like a needle to the heart.

I saw his eyes narrow ever so slightly. A storm of emotions churned behind them, like he could drown me in them at any second.

At that moment, I couldn’t help but wonder what he was feeling.

A bitter smile tugged at the corner of my lips. You just thought about me trying to kill myself?

“When Alicia and I fell into the water, you didn’t hesitate to save her. You knew I couldn’t swim, and still, you left me there. So tell me, what right do you have to question me now?”
