Chapter 104
I kept calling out, “Frederick! Frederick!”
I could feel the arms tighten, then suddenly go still. His grip was slight; it felt like he might break me in half.
I was in a daze. For a moment, I thought I saw Jonathan’s face, but then I got pulled into a deeper abyss that swallowed my mind completely. Everyone around me tore me down with their insults and snide remarks. I took all the pain as I desperately looked for a way out.
I saw Alicia and I struggling in the water, but Jonathan didn’t hesitate and swam straight to her. Only Frederick saw me. He was the only person there to save me.
Then, I saw myself drowning in the bathtub, gasping for air and on the verge of death. However, Jonathan stayed at Alicia’s side. It was Frederick who showed up in time and saved me.
A voice echoed in my mind, “Frederick saved me. He saved me." Whenever things fell apart, he was the one who ran to me when I needed help the most. He was like a lifeline in the middle of the storm. I wanted to reach for him and stay alive. “Save me, Frederick!”
I jolted awake. The first thing I saw was Jonathan’s face right in front of me. He held me in his arms, his gaze deep and unreadable. His dark eyes were a whirlwind of emotion, like a tide about to crash down and swallow me whole.
My voice was almost nothing, but I still blurted out a single name without meaning to, “Frederick.”
His eyes went dark and hollow in a flash. He held me like he never wanted to let go, as if holding me tighter could make me a part of him. “Stop calling his name.”
Gritting his teeth, he continued, “Don’t even think about asking him for help again.”
Then, he whispered in my ear, his voice becoming raspy. “I’m right here with you. I’m the only one who is never going to leave you."
I woke up to a splitting headache the next morning. It was better than last night, but it was still hard to beat. I woke up to find Jonathan next to me. That wasn’t something that happened often before.
I glanced at him and took a moment to clear my head. Then, I moved his arm off my waist and got out of bed. But in the next second, he yanked me straight into his arms. “Where are you going?”
I took a deep breath and snapped, “I want to grab something to eat, I’m hungry.”
He closed his eyes and continued to cling to me. “The kitchen staff is already making something for you, just stay with me.”
I pushed him away and looked at him in frustration. “What do you want from me, Jonathan! I want a...”
Before I could even say the word “divorce,” Jonathan covered my mouth with a cold gaze. “Have you forgotten what I said, Elise? You’re not getting a divorce unless you cough up 300 million dollars.”
I clenched my fists and took a deep breath. “Alright, just wait and see. I swear I'll make that 300 million dollars.” I had plans to work with Frederick, get the business running, and secure the funding. After getting everything...
Jonathan just looked at me without saying anything.
The kitchen brought in breakfast. It wasn’t what I liked, but the ingredients were high-end.
I was ready to divorce Jonathan the first chance I got.
I didn’t know if I had ever had fancy food like this when I was 25 years old, but the 18-year-old me definitely hadn’t. I didn’t even know what it was supposed to taste like.
After the memory loss, I was stuck at the stage of being a broke college student.
