Chapter 252
Sean Stevens had always defended her, so sheโd believed she could rely on him. However, she learned his feelings were fickle, easily withdrawn. When she found herself without his support, the despair was overwhelming, nearly suicidal. Her imprisonment had been agonizing; several times, she'd considered ending her life. Only Lina's frequent visits and encouragement had saved her. She felt immense gratitude for her best friend.
Grace sighed, unbuttoned her costume, and started to remove it when she heard footsteps. Startled, she saw Jason in the dressing room. The film crew was outside; the room was empty. "This is the women's dressing room. Get out," she said, flushing.
He advanced. "What are you afraid of?"
She retreated, but he followed, until she was cornered against a closet. His hands pressed against the door, trapping her. "Why are you afraid of me defending you?"
He didn't understand. Most women would welcome his protection, but she was an exception.
Grace instinctively placed her hands on his chest. "Leave; someone will be in here soon."
"No one will," he stated confidently.
"Why are you so sure?" she demanded.
"Because my bodyguard is guarding the door. Do you think anyone will enter?"
She was stunned; she hadn't noticed the bodyguard.
He repeated his question, gently pushing her hair from her cheek. "Tell me, why are you afraid?"
Her makeup, while enhancing her appearance, didn't suit her. He could smell the powder. He preferred her natural scent. Only her almond-shaped eyes remained largely unchanged by the makeup; their intensity made her seem adorable to him.
She bit her lip, denying, "I'm not afraid."
He gently lifted her chin, forcing eye contact. "I asked why, not if." He was certain of her fear.
Grace's heart pounded. Had he seen through her? His intense gaze seemed to penetrate her.
