Chapter 209
In the bustling metropolis of Seamar City, a monthly salary of $4,000 was barely enough to make ends meet, let alone live comfortably.
โMiss Miles, please donโt rush into a decision. Take a day to think it over and let me know your decision tomorrow,โ the interviewer suggested with a polite smile, handing Shelia her resume.
Shelia stomped her feet and left the company. It was a newly listed company, nowhere near the caliber of the Nichols Group, and yet they dared to set the bar so high. Unwilling to accept defeat, Shelia quickly contacted several more companies, eager to find a position that matched her qualifications.
However, much to her dismay, each company she approached followed Debraโs instructions and rejected her application outright. Even when she lowered her expectations, the highest offer she received was a measly $3,000. Despondent, Shelia found herself sitting on the street, unable to comprehend how, as a graduate student from Arcane Academy, she could be so unwanted.
Her phone rang, and she scrambled to answer it, hoping it was a callback from one of the human resources departments. Instead, she received a notification from her department head.
โShelia, I heard youโve left Tyson Enterprises,โ the director inquired.
Shelia bit her lip. โI felt that Tyson Enterprises wasnโt the right fit for me, so I resigned.โ
โBut I heard that Tyson Enterprises dismissed you.โ
โSir, I resigned voluntarily. If you donโt believe meโฆโ
โThatโs not important right now. Whatโs important is that you need to find a new internship immediately. You have less than a month. By this time next month, I need your internship report and the companyโs stamp.โ
With that, the director hung up, leaving Shelia with a sinking feeling in her stomach. She knew she had no choice but to act fast. She needed a job, and she needed one immediately. Hesitantly, she dialed the number for Elvenroot Enterprises, a subsidiary of the McKinney Group.
The call was answered promptly, and Shelia felt a pang of humiliation as she spoke. โHello, Iโm Shelia Miles. Iโm willing to intern with you, and I can start today.โ
โGreat, just come over. Iโll have someone set up a workstation for you,โ the interviewer responded, her tone not particularly warm, but at least it wasnโt another outright rejection.
Shelia grabbed her bag, determined to make the best of the situation. The low salary and poor conditions didnโt matter, she told herself. She would find a good job after graduation.
What she didnโt realize was that Seamar City no longer held the growth opportunities she once envisioned.
Meanwhile, Debra received a call from the branch office, updating her on Sheliaโs situation.
โI see.โ She hung up the phone.
From her vantage point in the presidentโs office, she could see Sheliaโs dejected and awkward state as she entered the building.
Ultimately, Shelia chose to stay with the McKinney Group. But life at the McKinney Group wasnโt as easy as she had imagined.
Ben remarked, โIโve looked into Sheliaโs background. Her academic performance has always been stable. If she works hard, she should find a place in the financial sector.โ
Debra knew well that in her past life, after studying abroad, Shelia had helped Juan make a considerable amount of money, earning his high regard and special training. But in this life, Sheliaโs decision to stay at Arcane Academy for her graduate studies instead of going abroad puzzled Debra. If Shelia had chosen to study abroad, she would have had many more opportunities and a broader perspective.
