Chapter 147
The McKinney Groupโs commercial street, once unnoticed, suddenly sprang up overnight. Meanwhile, chaos brewed at the Nichols Group. An emergency meeting convened, and the atmosphere in the boardroom was tense.
โMr. Nichols, this commercial street was nothing short of a surprise. Someone clearly aimed to sabotage us,โ one director stated. Another added, โYeah, everyone knows our mall, a year in the making, is about to open. Weโve spent a fortune on promotions, but now this McKinney Group beat us to it.โ A third chimed in, โNumerous merchants have signed contracts with them. This could cost us billions.โ
The directors debated fervently. In the seat of honor, Juan rubbed his temples. โEnough!โ he commanded, silencing the room. โDo you know whoโs the owner of the McKinney Group?โ he asked.
Joe responded, โThe owner is elusive. Weโve investigated but found nothing. However, this street was once part of Melodyโs auctioned sewage area.โ
The revelation stunned everyone. โIs this true?โ one director asked. Another exclaimed, โMr. Nichols, you canโt let her ruin our efforts!โ
Juan, annoyed by the uproar, banged the table. โFrom what I know, Debra sold this land long ago. She has no connection to this commercial street.โ The faint hope that flickered in the boardroom was extinguished. Thinking of Debra, Juan sighed. โMeeting adjourned.โ
The directors reluctantly left the room.
โSir, the principal called. Miss Milesโ graduate studies are settled,โ Joe said hesitantly. โShe wants to invite you to dinner.โ
Juan ignored the invitation. โAnd Debra?โ
โMadamโฆ she seems busy with her internship.โ
โInternship?โ
โItโs a school project. Graduate students intern for a month and then write a thesis.โ
โWhich company is she interning at?โ
Joe hesitated. โUmโฆโ He couldnโt bring himself to say it was any company other than the Nichols Group. In the past three months, Debra had been cold, showing no intention of reconciliation.
โContact the principal. Arrange for Debra to intern here.โ
โBut Madam may not agree.โ
Juan glanced at Joe, who immediately lowered his head.
โThen place her in a company cooperating with us. I want Debra within my sight.โ
โWill do,โ Joe agreed reluctantly, feeling a headache coming on.
Erica slammed the table. โCome to my company!โ
Randy slammed back. โNo! Mine!โ
They locked eyes, sparks of rivalry igniting. After three seconds, Randy backed down and turned to Marion. โWhat do you think? Which company would be better for Debra?โ
