Kale shook his head, confused. Drake was even more convinced of his thoughts. “Debra is biased because she loves Marion. She was just trying to whitewash his actions.”

He thought over the whole event and huffed, “Why did she come to my place and cause a scene? It’s not like I hurt Marion. She made it sound like I did it on purpose. It’s infuriating.”

“Boss, they are newlyweds. She’s bound to be protective,” Kale explained. “This whole thing isn’t really your fault. Robert is the one who used you to hurt Marion and drive a wedge between you two.”

Drake nodded but quickly caught himself. “Wait, what relationship do Marion and I have? Just shut up if you don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Boss…”

“Go, get out of my sight.”

“Yes, boss.”

“Wait. Come back. Have someone keep an eye on the hospital. Let me know when Marion wakes up. I’m not taking the blame for something I didn’t do.”

“Understood.”

Kale knew he was just putting on a tough act. All these years, Drake had talked about building power to get revenge on Marion, but he never actually did anything. Instead, he always ended up embarrassed.

Debra rushed back to find Marion already in the ICU. The doctor came out of the room and said, “The patient is out of danger, but he is still weak. He’ll need to stay in the hospital for observation over the next few days.”

“Thank you. Can I go in now?” Debra asked.

“Yes, the patient is awake. It’s good for family members to talk to him,” the doctor replied before leaving.

Debra entered the room and saw Marion lying pale on the bed, but he still managed a smile for her.

“You always say you’re the toughest and no one dares to mess with you. How did you end up like this?” she said, her tone tinged with blame and concern.

“I was careless this time. I promise it won’t happen again,” Marion said, taking her hand.

Debra pressed, “Careless or purposeful?”

“Careless,” Marion insisted, raising his hand. “I swear.”

He was speaking the truth. Robert’s actions had really taken him off guard. Back then, the three of them all worked for the Bernard family. Robert’s skills were almost as good as his. The slightest mistake in combat could be fatal in a critical moment.

“Better be,” Debra said, poking his forehead. “Remember, you have a family now. You’re not a lone wolf anymore. If you dare to make me a young widow, I’ll remarry the moment you’re gone.”

Marion turned serious. “I won’t give you that chance.”
