Chapter 147

She focused on the messages on her phone, busy replying to the ones Tamika sent her.

After a while, she realized the elevator doors seemed to have been open the whole time, and no one came in.

Her heart suddenly skipped a beat.

Something like this happened in the middle of the night, and Alarieka didn’t even have the courage to look up.

She thought of herself as being reborn, and maybe there really were ghosts and monsters in the world.

Her palms were sweaty; she kept her head down, moved her feet slowly, and reached out to touch the elevator, getting ready to find the close button and press it.

“Alarieka.”

A deep, cold voice sounded in the quiet room, and Alarieka’s mind went numb. Her body even gave an involuntary shiver.

She suddenly looked up.

Kieran was standing at the elevator door, holding the door and looking down at her.

Behind Kieran was a blinding white light. He stood with his back to it, and the shadows made his face look sharper and more intense. His narrow dark eyes looked deep and cold, watching her without any emotion.

At that moment, seeing Kieran was like seeing a ghost.

Alarieka instinctively still wanted to press the elevator door.

But there were still a bunch of people behind Kieran.

They were all in suits, respectfully following behind Kieran, looking at her and Kieran with hesitant and curious eyes.

Someone behind me asked hesitantly, “Mr. Argent, why aren’t you going in?”

Alarieka quickly stepped back, shrank into the corner, and made enough room for them to come in.

Kieran stared at her for a moment, then stepped inside.

I didn’t know if it was on purpose or not, but Kieran wasn’t standing next to her at first. He got pushed to her side by the people behind them.

Noticing Kieran’s arm against hers, she frowned and scooted into the corner.

Then Kieran was pushed over again.

That crowd was packed together on the other side, and there was this empty space around Kieran.

But Alarieka had nowhere left to retreat.

Alarieka: …

Alarieka stared straight ahead in silence, and the elevator had been really quiet; you could even hear some people breathing.

And…

There was still some smell of alcohol.

She looked at Kieran’s clothes suspiciously, then looked at the people around.

This was an office building. Did these people really need to drink while talking business in an office building?

Someone started talking about work, and the whole elevator was filled with conversation.

Kieran grunted from time to time, his deep voice coming from above Alarieka’s head.

After the conversation ended, someone hesitantly asked, “Mr. Argent, who is this?”

Kieran answered simply: “Sister.”

Everyone laughed, “So she’s Mr. Argent’s sister. No wonder, this Ms. Argent really was pretty!”

She kept her head down, so these people couldn’t see her face clearly, and most likely took her for Clarissa.

Kieran didn’t deny it either.

The elevator finally arrived, and Alarieka waited until the crowd got out before she ran out.

The next moment, a force grabbed her wrist: “Where are you running off to?”

The person walking ahead quickly turned around to look at her and Kieran.

Alarieka pulled at the corner of her mouth: “Of course I was going back!”

Kieran’s voice was low: “I’ll take you.”

So many people were watching; Alarieka felt really uncomfortable: “No need.”

Kieran pulled her over to him and said in a low voice, “You didn’t have a choice.”

Someone spoke up at the right moment, smiling and saying, “Mr. Argent and Ms. Argent have a great relationship. The brother and sister get along well.”

Alarieka gave a fake smile.

On the way back, Alarieka sat in the front passenger seat. When she opened Kieran’s car door, she immediately saw the file folder on the passenger seat.

Kieran was buckling his seatbelt when he reached over, grabbed the folder, and tossed it onto the back seat. He gave her a quick reminder: “Buckle up.”

Alarieka glanced at the file bag on the back seat, then quickly looked away.

The whole way, the two of them were quiet.

Alarieka turned her head to look at the night flashing by outside the window, and for once, she felt calm inside.

It was just a ring that broke the peace here.

Kieran picked up the phone: “Rose.”

Roschelle’s voice on the phone was a bit quiet, and Alarieka could only hear bits and pieces.

“Kier… I wanted… you to come back…”

Alarieka didn’t mean to listen to how Kieran and Roschelle got along. Her mind was already wandering off somewhere else, but one thing Kieran said pulled her drifting soul right back.

“Feeling bad?”

“The doctor said there really would be morning sickness in the first three months. What did you want to eat? I’ll bring it for you.”
