Chapter 7: A Way Down

Looking at him, Wendy mirrored her mother's expression—eyes full of pity. "You've enough on your plate raising Joy alone. A car will help. Don't worry; the Harrisons won't dare challenge me." The Harrisons, though lacking the Quinns' power, still held local influence. Years ago, Henry's arranged marriage had ended badly; his wife abandoned him and their daughter, leaving him defeated. The Harrisons were deeply ashamed, unable to forgive his rejection. They'd barred him from their home, even repossessing the house they'd given him. Wendy insisted Henry's place was under renovation, but in truth, she also owned it. Chase sighed and left. Love, Wendy reflected, made all the difference. She'd given Henry everything she'd never offered Chase.

Driving back to her dorm, Chase's message arrived: "Don't forget to sign the papers next week." Wendy had just left the hospital, intending to collect Henry and Joy, but work awaited. Seeing Chase's name sparked irritation. Her decision to invest Quinn Group funds in his hospital had been solo; the board hadn't understood. She'd hoped to see him today, but he wasn't on shift. She'd given him a way out, preserved his pride, yet he seemed ungrateful. Then his message arrived, eliciting a faint smile. "Not bad," she thought. He'd realized the investment's source. They were husband and wife; friction was inevitable. Even if unconventional, someone had to initiate.

Since Henry's return, Wendy had faced him directly, repeatedly. The man she'd once desperately loved—she finally had him. She should have rushed to divorce Chase and build her dream family with Henry, yet she hesitated. Perhaps it was habit; five years of marriage. Ending it felt unfair to Chase, she rationalized. She still loved Henry, but Chase's quiet thoughtfulness was comforting. Her relationship with Henry had been passionate, chaotic—a constant media spectacle. After so much drama, Chase's calm stability was easier. Wendy was a businesswoman, focused on returns, always knowing what worked best.

Back at the office, she replied to Chase: "Got it." Sam, also working late, followed Wendy. "Ma'am, the Ocean Project conference starts the day after tomorrow. It's a week long. Your flight details are on your phone. I'll accompany you." Wendy paused, her gaze meeting Sam's. Sam, sensing her thoughts, added, "Ma'am, it's a five-nation joint conference. AGS International—the one you wanted to collaborate with—will be there." Wendy murmured, "Oh." The conference started the day after tomorrow, requiring departure tomorrow. A week-long absence meant missing the adoption signing. After a moment, she said, "Have Lina go with me. You stay. Sign the papers with Chase next week." Sam hesitated, "I'm signing?"
