In a way, this was better. Just finding time to see each other once a day was enough.
Wendy went to her study to review documents, while Chase tidied the couch. He was about to turn off the TV when the sudden appearance of a familiar face froze him. He disliked the house being too quiet; it was a lingering effect from the past five years. He preferred background noise, the sound of people around him. Even with the TV on, it never distracted him from his work. And there, on the screen, was Henry. Henry had returned to China?
“Yes, this time I’m returning not as a representative of the Harrison family, but as a representative of Moses Group,” Henry said to the camera. “There may be some prejudice against this company, but my presence here proves I’m a law-abiding citizen. People shouldn’t judge based on outdated views.”
Chase stared. He prided himself on being calm and rational, but even he almost rolled his eyes at Henry’s shameless spin. He already knew most of what there was to know about Moses Group, from Waylon and Wendy. No explanation from Henry could change the facts. Chase instinctively glanced toward Wendy’s study. As expected, a reporter immediately asked Henry about his love life.
“My love life?” Henry smiled mysteriously, staring intently into the camera, as if trying to see someone through it. “I’ve had a failed marriage and a child. I also had a childhood sweetheart, but I gave her up for a business alliance. That was my mistake. If I get another chance, I’d definitely want to reclaim that love.”
“Mr. Henry, are you referring to Madam Wendy of Quinn Group?”
Henry chuckled. “You all know too much.”
“But Madam Wendy is already married. Isn’t this… inappropriate?”
“There’s no such thing as ‘first come, first served’ in love. Sure, I’m six years late, but who’s to say that doesn’t mark the beginning of a new chapter? It’s too early to say more—so let’s leave it at that.”
This was Henry’s declaration of war. He likely knew Chase would hear it—through Lemon, a secretary, or some other means. Henry had returned, and he was officially drawing battle lines: in business, against Wendy; in love, against Chase. Now, it seemed everyone had become Henry’s enemy, with no escape. Chase clenched the papers in his hands.
So what if it’s a declaration of war? He was no longer alone. He no longer doubted their relationship. As long as he and Wendy stood together, no one could defeat them—not in love. And as for business… Chase looked down at the documents. They wouldn’t lose there, either.
By the next morning, news of Henry’s return had spread throughout the business world. Wendy didn’t find out until she arrived at the office. When she checked her phone, the interview had already been transcribed into an article.
“Guess what Henry’s up to?” Sammy asked.
“Do I even have to guess? He’s mad at the world—and now he’s dragging me into it,” Wendy said flatly, tossing her phone aside and picking up her files.
Sure enough, Chase arrived at Quinn Group with his team, including Bernard. As they got out of the car, Bernard pulled Chase aside and whispered, “You brought us to Quinn Group for this meeting? Does the board know about your relationship with Madam Wendy?”
Chase replied, “Well, not really. There will always be people who don’t care about my personal life, as long as I deliver results. Who I’m married to doesn’t matter. Don’t worry. Sammy and Melody booked the room. I was going to host you all at home, but things are a bit messy at the hospital lately. Didn’t want to have that conversation there.”
Bernard nodded. “Makes sense.” He looked around the unfamiliar building. Despite working with Wendy for years, he rarely set foot in Quinn Group; he usually went straight to her office. Now, seeing the company’s vastness left even the other department heads and Blanc wide-eyed.
One of them leaned in and whispered, “Chairman, I know the hospital isn’t short on funds, but… isn’t this a bit much just to discuss a surgical plan? What if finance hears about this—will we get reimbursed?”
Chase laughed at old Dr. Meyer’s concern. “Don’t worry. No reimbursement needed.”
The group followed. Aside from Bernard and Blanc, the others were clearly uneasy, half-expecting to be stopped at the door. But the security guard saw them and opened the door for Chase with a respectful nod, even whispering something that elicited a nod of acknowledgment from Chase.
