One of my assistants hurried over and said, "Ms. Murphy, I just checked with a friend. Mr. Wallace is a real creep–let alone [with] someone as young and beautiful as you, Ms. Murphy. My friend told me that last time he saw a woman in her forties, he wouldn't even let her off the hook."

I frowned in thought, then nodded. "Let's try to avoid working with people who have questionable character like that, but let's not get on his bad side either."

When I got back to my office, I noticed that the door to the office next door, which was usually closed, was now open.

I knocked softly, and Edward's deep voice came from inside. "Come in."

I pushed the door open and peeked in.

Edward was sitting in his office chair, staring intently at his laptop.

"Weren't you supposed to be back the day after tomorrow?" I asked with a smile as I stepped in.

"I wrapped up the important stuff, so I figured I'd come back early," Edward waved me over.

I walked over to him.

Edward looked me up and down. "Why are you dressed so formally today?"

"Don't I always dress like this? I had a client meeting today, so I went a little more formal," I said with a smile.

"You look amazing dressed like this," Edward murmured in a low voice. "Honestly, I don't even want you stepping out the door."

"Where did all that confidence go, Mr. Jennings?" I teased, catching onto his joke. "If you won't even let me out, how am I supposed to get any work done?"

Edward gave my cheek a playful pinch, his eyes lingering on my wild, untamed look. "I know I can't keep you locked up, and I wouldn't want to take away your freedom. But you've got to keep your heart locked up tight. Don't go opening it up to just anyone, got it?"

"But what if…" I began, dragging out the words.

"No what ifs," Edward said, all bossy. "You're my girlfriend now. That's that."

I was just messing with him, but seeing him get all tense and jealous was actually pretty adorable.

I reached up and straightened his collar, putting on my best little vixen voice. "Got it. Aren't I being super obedient?"

Edward sucked in a breath, his eyes growing even darker as he caught my fingers and pressed them to his lips, kissing them again and again. "Since when did you start talking all sweet like that? Are you trying to drive me crazy?"

I ducked my head and laughed out loud. Of course I was doing it on purpose–I just loved seeing Edward all serious and not knowing what to do with me.

"So your life's that easy to steal, huh? Just a few words and I've got you all flustered?" I arched an eyebrow, giving him my most smug, victorious look.

"You've really learned how to be bad," Edward said, his eyes dark and hungry, like he wanted nothing more than to pin me to the bed right then and there. But his voice was helpless as he brushed against me. "Why is it taking forever for the sun to go down today?"

I glanced out the window. Dusk was settling in, the sunset painting everything with a bittersweet beauty.

"What, you can only get up to mischief after dark?" I teased.

Edward's handsome face flushed, and he gave my thigh a teasing squeeze. "Forget it. Let's call it a day and head home."

"Where to?" I asked.

"To my place. I brought you a present," Edward said, grabbing his laptop bag and strategically placing it in front of his lap.

The way his laptop bag was suddenly sticking up made me burst out laughing.

Edward looked a little embarrassed by my laughter, but his gaze was scorching hot.
