Chapter 766
โIf she really cared about you, sheโd leave. She shouldnโt come between you and Ryan,โ Nora shot back, then turned and ran back into the hospital room.
Her words stung, leaving me feeling awkward and ashamed.
โVictoria, Iโll go talk to her,โ Edward said softly, his voice full of concern.
I nodded. โOkay.โ
Edward stepped into the hospital room and closed the door behind him, clearly trying to shield me from any more hurtful words.
Watching Edward and Nora talk in the hospital room, my feelings were all over the place. I turned and headed for the elevator.
After coming back to life, Iโd been waving the flag of freedom, but somehow I kept getting swept up in the mess of relationships.
Now, it felt like Iโd been dumped right back where I started.
Standing at the elevator, I watched the numbers tick up, my mind blank for a moment.
Iโve never really dared to look into my own heart, because thereโs so much stuff buried thereโeven things Iโm afraid to admit to myself.
And right now, it suddenly hit me: I might actually be in love with someone Iโm not supposed to love.
But my heartโs already fallen, and I feel totally lostโlike Iโm wandering through a forest with no way out.
When I got to the ground floor, I saw a cafรฉ across the street and walked right in.
Language wasnโt a barrier anymore, and that made me feel a bit more at ease on these foreign streets.
I ordered a coffee and grabbed a seat by the window.
Outside, the scenery was unfamiliar, people of all backgrounds passing by, but somehow my heart gradually settled down.
โExcuse me, is this seat taken?โ a middle-aged man asked.
I replied coolly, โIs there something you need?โ
โI noticed you were sitting here alone, looking a bit down. As a fellow countryman, is there anything I can do to help?โ the man said, trying to sound sincere.
I leaned back in my chair and let out a cold laugh. โIf you know Iโm not in a good mood, then please donโt bother me.โ
Chapter 766
โHey, weโre from the same countryโฆโ he started to say.
I cut him off coldly. โPeople always say the ones you really have to watch out for overseas are your own people.โ
He looked awkward for a second, then fished out a business card. โI run my own company here. If you ever need a job or any help, just let me know.โ
โYouโre not exactly young. I bet you have a wife and kids at home. Flirting with random womenโever think about how your wife would feel?โ I shot back, my tone cold and full of disgust.
Seeing his attempt at flirting fail, he just shrugged, a bit more honest now. โMy wifeโs back in the country. She doesnโt keep tabs on my private life.โ
โSo, just because your wifeโs not around, thatโs your excuse to mess around?โ I shot him a cold, unwavering look.
โFine, if you donโt want to talk, thatโs up to you. But thereโs no need to take a jab at me,โ he said, clearly annoyed as he stood up.
I couldnโt be bothered to respond. I just stared out the window, ignoring him completely.
Time seemed to drag on endlessly. โIs Edward still not done talking?โ I thought, growing impatient.
I reached for my phone, only to realize it was completely dead.
Not that it matteredโmy phone might not even work in this country anyway.
Thinking that, I quickly paid the bill and hurried out of the cafรฉ.
Doing the math, I realized it had already been more than half an hour.
โIf Edward canโt get in touch with me, will he think I left because I was upset?โ I wondered.
โWill he come looking for me?โ I couldnโt help but worry.
I pressed my hand to my forehead, trying to figure out where I could find somewhere to charge my phone.
Just then, I heard hurried footsteps coming from down the hallway.
I turned around and saw Edward. As soon as he saw me, he rushed over and wrapped me in a tight hug. โVictoria, where did you go? Iโve been looking for you for so long.โ
