Chapter 761

It took me three days to finish handing over my responsibilities to Jared. I thought Iโ€™d finally have more time to spend with Edward, but then he got a call.

โ€œVictoria, Noraโ€™s in the hospital. Iโ€™m flying to Aureliaโ€“do you want to come with me?โ€ Edward looked anxious, his voice tinged with urgency.

Nothing hurts a parent more than seeing their child sick.

โ€œSure, Iโ€™ll go with you,โ€ I replied. Iโ€™m free now, so I can go with him wherever he needs.

โ€œShould I let Yvonne know? We might be gone for a few days,โ€ Edward asked softly.

โ€œYeah, when are we heading out? Iโ€™ll go see her for a bit,โ€ I replied.

โ€œNo later than two hours from now,โ€ Edward said.

I hurried over to Sallyโ€™s. It was Saturday, and Yvonne had piano lessons in the morning and came home for lunch.

When I appeared in front of Yvonne, her face lit up with delight. โ€œMom, did you come to take me out to play?โ€

Sallyโ€™s attitude toward me was much more polite than before.

โ€œYvonne doesnโ€™t have any classes this afternoon. Why donโ€™t you take her out for a while?โ€ Sally suggested.

I shook my head. โ€œIโ€™ve got something to take care of this afternoon, so I canโ€™t take her out.โ€

โ€œBut Mom, you donโ€™t have work anymoreโ€“what do you have to do?โ€ Yvonneโ€™s clever eyes lit up with curiosity.

โ€œIโ€™m heading to Aurelia for a while,โ€ I replied truthfully.

Sallyโ€™s face shifted, disbelief written all over her. โ€œVictoria, Jared told me youโ€™re planning to get married. Is that true?โ€

I nodded. โ€œYeah, Iโ€™ve started seeing someone, and Iโ€™m dating with marriage in mind.โ€

Sally looked genuinely rattled. Sheโ€™d always thought I was reaching above my league with Jared, so after our divorce, she was just waiting to see me crash and burn.

But I didnโ€™t give her that satisfaction, and it was obvious she wasnโ€™t happy about it.

โ€œWow, you found someone new already?โ€ Sally said, her voice thick with sarcasm. โ€œGuess being pretty really does make you popular. Itโ€™s been over a year since the divorceโ€“Jared hasnโ€™t dated anyone, but you always seem to have a new guy every now and then.โ€

I caught the mockery in her words, and I couldnโ€™t help but feel pissed off.

Back when I was still Jaredโ€™s wife, she took Yvonne all the way abroad to see Tracy, even waited on Tracy hand and foot during her postpartum confinement, saying that once she recovered, she could keep having more kids.

Even if sheโ€™s forgotten all that, I never will.

But with Yvonne right there, I didnโ€™t want to bring up old grievances and stir up trouble. It would only upset her.

โ€œMrs. Holcomb, everyone has the right to pursue happiness, donโ€™t they? Iโ€™m not seeing multiple people at once, and I never played with your sonโ€™s feelings. Is it really so hard for you to accept that someone else can find happiness too?โ€ I replied, polite but firm.

Sallyโ€™s face darkened at once. โ€œIf youโ€™re getting remarried, then Yvonne is no longer your concern. Sheโ€™s a Holcomb.โ€

I was taken aback, glancing at Yvonne.

Yvonne burst into tears and clung to my arm. โ€œGrandma, please donโ€™t fight with my mom. Sheโ€™s my mom, no matter whatโ€“even if she and Dad are divorced, sheโ€™s still my mom.โ€

Sally retorted angrily, โ€œIf she was really a good mother, she wouldnโ€™t have divorced so easily. Wasnโ€™t your dad good enough to her?โ€

โ€œMrs. Holcomb, have you really forgotten about Tracy?โ€ I reminded her pointedly.

Sally choked on her words and fell silent.

Yvonne immediately let go of my arm and said, โ€œMom, if you need to go, itโ€™s okay. Iโ€™ll comfort Grandma in a bitโ€“she wonโ€™t stay mad at you.โ€

Seeing how mature Yvonne had become, I couldnโ€™t help but feel a sense of pride.

โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll call you later,โ€ I said, turning to leave.
