Chapter 761
It took me three days to finish handing over my responsibilities to Jared. I thought Iโd finally have more time to spend with Edward, but then he got a call.
โVictoria, Noraโs in the hospital. Iโm flying to Aureliaโdo you want to come with me?โ Edward looked anxious, his voice tinged with urgency.
Nothing hurts a parent more than seeing their child sick.
โSure, Iโll go with you,โ I replied. Iโm free now, so I can go with him wherever he needs.
โShould I let Yvonne know? We might be gone for a few days,โ Edward asked softly.
โYeah, when are we heading out? Iโll go see her for a bit,โ I replied.
โNo later than two hours from now,โ Edward said.
I hurried over to Sallyโs. It was Saturday, and Yvonne had piano lessons in the morning and came home for lunch.
When I appeared in front of Yvonne, her face lit up with delight. โMom, did you come to take me out to play?โ
Sallyโs attitude toward me was much more polite than before.
โYvonne doesnโt have any classes this afternoon. Why donโt you take her out for a while?โ Sally suggested.
I shook my head. โIโve got something to take care of this afternoon, so I canโt take her out.โ
โBut Mom, you donโt have work anymoreโwhat do you have to do?โ Yvonneโs clever eyes lit up with curiosity.
โIโm heading to Aurelia for a while,โ I replied truthfully.
Sallyโs face shifted, disbelief written all over her. โVictoria, Jared told me youโre planning to get married. Is that true?โ
I nodded. โYeah, Iโve started seeing someone, and Iโm dating with marriage in mind.โ
Sally looked genuinely rattled. Sheโd always thought I was reaching above my league with Jared, so after our divorce, she was just waiting to see me crash and burn.
But I didnโt give her that satisfaction, and it was obvious she wasnโt happy about it.
โWow, you found someone new already?โ Sally said, her voice thick with sarcasm. โGuess being pretty really does make you popular. Itโs been over a year since the divorceโJared hasnโt dated anyone, but you always seem to have a new guy every now and then.โ
I caught the mockery in her words, and I couldnโt help but feel pissed off.
Back when I was still Jaredโs wife, she took Yvonne all the way abroad to see Tracy, even waited on Tracy hand and foot during her postpartum confinement, saying that once she recovered, she could keep having more kids.
Even if sheโs forgotten all that, I never will.
But with Yvonne right there, I didnโt want to bring up old grievances and stir up trouble. It would only upset her.
โMrs. Holcomb, everyone has the right to pursue happiness, donโt they? Iโm not seeing multiple people at once, and I never played with your sonโs feelings. Is it really so hard for you to accept that someone else can find happiness too?โ I replied, polite but firm.
Sallyโs face darkened at once. โIf youโre getting remarried, then Yvonne is no longer your concern. Sheโs a Holcomb.โ
I was taken aback, glancing at Yvonne.
Yvonne burst into tears and clung to my arm. โGrandma, please donโt fight with my mom. Sheโs my mom, no matter whatโeven if she and Dad are divorced, sheโs still my mom.โ
Sally retorted angrily, โIf she was really a good mother, she wouldnโt have divorced so easily. Wasnโt your dad good enough to her?โ
โMrs. Holcomb, have you really forgotten about Tracy?โ I reminded her pointedly.
Sally choked on her words and fell silent.
Yvonne immediately let go of my arm and said, โMom, if you need to go, itโs okay. Iโll comfort Grandma in a bitโshe wonโt stay mad at you.โ
Seeing how mature Yvonne had become, I couldnโt help but feel a sense of pride.
โAlright, Iโll call you later,โ I said, turning to leave.
