Chapter 749
I looked at Edward, and he was quietly gazing back at me. Then, he smiled. โThere might be some pressure, but weโll do our best in our roles. Time keeps moving, and the kids will grow up.โ
I smiled, lips pressed together. โYeah, time really does fly by.โ
After I stopped being a housewife and started working, time really did seem to speed up.
It was already June 2015, and the weather was heating up. The vibrant summer was just around the corner.
โVictoria, am I imagining things, or do your eyes seem like theyโve got a story to tell?โ Edward suddenly asked. โWhat have you been through?โ
I felt a jolt in my heart and quickly masked the sadness in my eyes with a smile. โReally? Maybe itโs just my slight nearsightedness. Everything seems more sentimental to me.โ
Edward shook his head. โNo, youโre too calm for your age.โ
โIs that so?โ I lowered my gaze and smiled. โYou like me, so you probably see me through rose-colored glasses. People always see the best in what they love.โ
โActually, the first time I saw you, I noticed a kind of independence in you that canโt be claimed by anyone, as if you were always a little apart from everyone else.โ As Edward spoke, he reached out and drew me into his embrace.
I lay quietly with my head in his lap, feeling something stir deep inside me.
It was an unfamiliar yet wonderful feeling, having someone try to truly understand me.
It was like being a closed book, and someone finally chose to open it and read the very first page.
โEdward, is this just the thrill of something new for you?โ I asked softly.
Edward ran his fingers through my hair, sending a slight shiver down my spine.
โWhat thrill? Where do you get all these ideas? You really need to stop reading so much stuff online,โ Edward chuckled helplessly.
โAlright, Iโve got nothing to lose now, so Iโm not worried youโll fall out of love with me,โ I said, looking up at him.
Edward pinched my cheek with a hint of exasperation. โStop overthinking things that havenโt even happened yet. So, what did Mariah say when she invited you for tea?โ
โShe told me that if I want to be Mrs. Sterling, I need to have a strong mind,โ I replied honestly.
Edward paused, then laughed. โSheโs not wrong. I might actually need you to help me handle some things at the company.โ
โHandle what exactly?โ I blurted out in surprise.
โI want you to oversee the charity foundation. I know youโll handle it really well.โ Edward looked down at me.
โMe?โ I was stunned. โIโm afraid I canโt do it.โ
Edward seemed to know Iโd hesitate. He said in a low voice, โYouโll be fine. Iโll have someone show you the ropes. I want the charity fundโs management in the hands of someone I trustโand honestly, no oneโs better for that than my wife.โ
โEdward, Iโฆโ He really was offering me something big here.
โAlright, donโt get all emotional just because Iโm offering you something good. Dream bigger. You can be even more amazing,โ Edward said, leaning down to kiss my forehead. โItโs settled.โ
My thoughts were all over the place. In my previous life, I was totally lostโno ambition, just obsessed with chasing a manโs love, and in the end, I lost so badly it wasnโt even funny.
This time around, I threw myself into my career, and somehow, love just kept blooming on its own. And now, Iโve even met a guy who actually helps me reach the top.
Is this what they call a happy accident? I never meant for things to turn out this good, but here I am.
That night, Edward didnโt go back to the Jennings family. He spent the night at my place.
While I was showering, I remembered that last time I cranked the cold water all the way up, drenching myself like a drowned rat, but even then, whatever was in my system kept messing with my mind, making it impossible to think straight.
Edward was the one who rushed in and got me to the hospital.
I remember acting like a total mess, practically draping myself all over him and making things difficult for him the whole way.
But Edward never took advantage of meโnot even a little. For someone who usually acts like a bit of a rogue, he was all gentleman when it really mattered.
