Now, I keep my mouth shut and only ask whatโs necessary.
Once my hair was dry, it fell lightly around my shoulders. I leaned back on the couch, watching Edward put the hair dryer away where it belonged.
โWhose shirts are those in your walk-in closet?โ Edward suddenly asked.
The quiet living room suddenly felt like it was being hit by an invisible tornado.
My first instinct was to play dumb. โMaybe Jared left them behind.โ
โReally? You still keep your ex-husbandโs shirts? Are you that sentimental?โ Edwardโs voice was flat, giving nothing away.
But I was sharp enough to pick up on the jealousy simmering beneath his calm tone.
โNo, I just didnโt expect you to show up so suddenly. I didnโt have time to get rid of them,โ I said, looking down, my voice soft.
My answer seemed to satisfy Edward. โSo, itโs my fault?โ
โItโs your fault for showing up so unexpectedly,โ I said, dead serious.
Edward sighed and ruffled my hair. โAlright, Iโll give you a heads-up next time.โ
โSure. Surprises for adults usually end up being a shock,โ I said, my eyes sparkling as I looked at him.
Edward gave me a look like he couldnโt believe I was still enjoying this, then pinched my cheek. โVictoria, do you get what Iโm really saying?โ
โGot it. If Iโm with you, I canโt be two-timingโIโd just end up crashing and burning,โ I said, my voice a little breathy with his hand still on my cheek.
Edward couldnโt help but smile, letting go of my cheek and gently rubbing the spot heโd pinched. โSmart girl. You catch on quick.โ
โWhat about you?โ I countered.
Edward froze for a second.
โI can be all in with you. Can you say the same?โ I asked, locking eyes with him.
Edward nodded. โOf course. Thatโs exactly what I want.โ
โNo, we canโt,โ I said, and I couldnโt help but laugh. We were both so serious, but honestly, itโs just not possible.
โWhy not?โ Edward frowned.
โYouโve got an ex-wife and a daughter, and Iโve got an ex-husband and a daughter. With a blended family like ours, how could we ever be all in for each other?โ I chuckled.
Edward understood right away. He sat down on the couch, leaning his head back. โAlright, youโre right. Maybe we just canโt.โ
โFrom now on, letโs not keep making promises or guaranteesโnothingโs ever set in stone,โ I said, setting some ground rules.
Edward shot me a grin. โSure, but just because we donโt say it doesnโt mean we wonโt do it. I can sense your motives in everything you say and do.โ
โOh, you think youโre that good?โ My face changed. โWell, Iโm no slouch either. My intuitionโs crazy sharpโI notice even the tiniest shift.โ
โOh? Then I better watch my step,โ Edward said.
โHmm?โ I narrowed my eyes.
Edward suddenly lunged, pinning me to the couch. โSo youโre taking charge now?โ
โNot at all,โ I said, turning my face away. โMen donโt need to be managedโthey should know how to behave themselves.โ
Since he was sick, Edward didnโt dare kiss my lips. Instead, he nuzzled against my neck, lingering there. โAlright, Iโll behave. Thanks for giving me this chance.โ
โEdward, quit it. Youโre sick,โ I said, my mind going blank from the heat radiating off him.
But Edward didnโt listenโhe just kept turning up the heat until my breath came uneven. Then he looked up at me. โWant me to please you another way?โ
I flinched at that, my voice sharp. โNo way, thatโs not my thing.โ
Edward gave a helpless little shake of his head. โAlright, guess Iโll just have to do it your way.โ
โDonโt even try,โ I cut him off. โI just finished yoga, Iโm wiped out. Seriously, not in the mood.โ
Edwardโs gaze grew heavy, his voice rough with a hint of hurt. โWow, already sick of me?โ
