Chapter 728
Edwardโs illness wasnโt anything serious, so they just prescribed some medicine and left.
I looked at Edward, thinking maybe he wasnโt that bad off last nightโmaybe that fever this morning was just because he overdid it. I never expected that even while sick, he could still throw out barbs that sting.
Edward noticed me staring and couldnโt help but smile. โWhatโs up?โ
I looked away and said calmly, โI always thought youโd be the type to really look after your health. So why are you still running around all over the place when youโre sick?โ
Edward raised an eyebrow with a playful look. โThereโs always that one person you just have to see, someone who makes you run around no matter what.โ
I pressed my lips together and smiled.
Edward and I were getting more in sync every day. Maybe itโs just in my nature to be drawn to strength. Being with Edward gave me a sense of peaceโjust sitting quietly together in the living room, not saying a word, and still feeling no pressure at all. Is this how grown-ups are supposed to be together?
At eleven, I went to the kitchen to start cooking. Edward had taken his meds and caught a nap, so he was looking a lot better. He kept getting calls, but every time he finished one, heโd wander into the kitchen to see what I was up to. I always thought he was clueless about cooking, but he actually knew his way around the spices.
โMy mom loves to cook, so I learned a thing or two from her,โ Edward said with a grin.
โReally? Isnโt your mom an artist? I always thought artists were supposed to be all mysterious and above everyday stuff,โ I laughed.
โYouโre giving artists too much credit. Weโre all humanโnobodyโs above the basics of life,โ Edward laughed.
I nodded. โTrue. Reality is reality, not some fairy tale.โ
I made three dishes and a soup. Edward prefers lighter flavors, and since heโs got a cold, I kept everything extra mildโdidnโt put in any chili at all. Thinking about the last time I took him out to eat, when I purposely picked that fancy restaurant and he ended up chugging water nonstop because the food was so spicy, I couldnโt help but laugh.
โThis tastes great,โ Edward said, picking up a piece of stewed taro and ribs and giving me a casual compliment.
โOh, last time I took you to that spicy restaurant, I did it on purpose,โ I said with a playful smile as I ate.
โI could tell,โ Edward replied, not the least bit bothered.
โI didnโt realize you couldnโt handle spicy food. I wonโt tease you like that again,โ I said softly.
โReally?โ Edward gave me a long, deep look. โBut honestly, I donโt mind if itโs you teasing me.โ
Under his gaze, I felt my cheeks grow warm. โIf I ever really piss you off, you have to forgive meโno matter what.โ
โUnconditionally, huh?โ Edward said, giving me a meaningful look. โYouโve got some nerve saying that.โ
I grinned slyly. โHey, everyone looks out for themselves. Itโs only natural for me to ask.โ
โAlright, as long as itโs not a matter of principle, Iโm already unconditional with you,โ Edward said, then added, โSo, do you want a new car?โ
I stared at him in surprise. โAre you really going to give me another one?โ
โYeah, your car looks pretty old. While youโre still young and passionate, you deserve to drive something you truly love,โ Edward replied, his tone so casual it was like he was just chatting about the weather.
โEdward, donโt be so good to me. People can get addicted to being spoiled,โ I said. If it was just a simple yes or no, of course Iโd say yes. But what if I get used to you always giving me things for free?
Edward just smiled. โIโm the one who got addicted to you first. Itโs not fair if Iโm the only one hooked, right?โ
Honestly, I couldnโt do anything about him. Edward had this way of making the impossible look easyโhe could shake up my whole world and act like it was nothing.
โYou just handed me an $1.8 billion order. Letโs save that for another time,โ I said with a laugh.
Edwardโs eyes were full of mixed emotions as he looked at me. โRyan pulled some strings and invested $3.8 billion in your company. From now on, every achievement you make, his presence will be right there, following you like a shadow.โ
I gasped, staring at him in disbelief. โEdward, youโre even turning this into a competition?โ
Edwardโs competitive side finally showed. โHeโs the one who wanted to compete with me first.โ
โSo, am I just the tool you guys use in your rivalry?โ I said, my tone full of exasperation.
โNo, youโre not a tool. Youโre the one I love,โ Edward replied, his voice low and sincere.
