Chapter 722

I tried to play it cool. โ€œOh, nothing. I just got some water on myself in the restroom.โ€

โ€œOh,โ€ she said, clearly skeptical, but she didnโ€™t dare push for more details.

Once I was in the car heading back, my heart finally started to calm down.

I couldnโ€™t believe Iโ€™d actually mistaken Ryan for Edwardโ€”and even tried to kiss him and tear his shirt open like that.

โ€˜Damn it,โ€™ I cursed inwardly.

From now on, I couldnโ€™t let myself drink like that ever again. If I got wasted and made a fool of myself, it could really ruin me.

When I got home, I collapsed onto my bed and slept until the early hours of the morning. The next day, I called in sick.

That morning, Jared came knocking on my door. Heโ€™d just dropped Yvonne off at school.

Iโ€™d just taken a shower and was in my pajamas, and as soon as I saw Jared, I grabbed a jacket and threw it on.

โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€ I frowned.

If it had been any other guy, I couldโ€™ve just ignored him.

But Jared was Yvonneโ€™s dad and my bossโ€”seeing him was practically routine at this point.

โ€œI brought you breakfast,โ€ Jared said, setting it down on the table. โ€œWhyโ€™d you get so wasted last night? Did you end up grabbing the wrong guy or something?โ€

My face shifted. โ€œDid you hear people talking about it?โ€

โ€œNah, I just know how you get when youโ€™re drunk,โ€ Jared teased, a sly smile on his lips.

Suddenly, flashes from my previous life hit me. Back then, Iโ€™d get drunk on purpose just to show up at his door, hoping to make him mine. God knows how many times I pestered Jared like that.

โ€œRelax,โ€ I shot back, giving him a smile even icier than his. โ€œEven if I do mistake someone for you, I wonโ€™t go chasing after you again.โ€ Instinctively, I pulled my jacket tighter around myself.

Jared caught the way I pulled my jacket tighter, his eyes growing unreadable. Then he gave a faint, almost mocking smile. โ€œYeah, youโ€™re over me now. Even if you needed someone to comfort you, I know I wouldnโ€™t even cross your mind.โ€

โ€œGood, as long as you know. Go on, you can leave nowโ€”I still want to sleep a bit more,โ€ I said, my head still fuzzy from last nightโ€™s drinking.

โ€œSo the state-owned company came knocking with a bag of cash this timeโ€”let me guess, thatโ€™s your doing again,โ€ Jared said, but instead of leaving, he pulled out a chair and sat down.

I shot him a surprised look. โ€œAre you just looking for another excuse to stuff my pockets? If thatโ€™s the case, just call it a bonus and wire it straight to my accountโ€”the more, the merrier.โ€

Jared fixed me with a serious look. โ€œAre you still in contact with Ryan?โ€

โ€œOf course not. Heโ€™s married now,โ€ I blurted out, my eyes darting away, unable to meet his gaze.

โ€œI actually looked into his marriage, but I couldnโ€™t find much. Their whole situation is way too hush-hush,โ€ Jared said, his tone almost soothing.

โ€œNo need to dig into it,โ€ I interrupted him. โ€œWe donโ€™t talk anymoreโ€”thereโ€™s nothing between me and Ryan.โ€

Jared leaned back in his chair, looking totally relaxed. โ€œHey, Iโ€™m a guy too. If Iโ€™ve got a woman I actually care about, thereโ€™s no way Iโ€™d just up and marry someone else. Even if I did, itโ€™d just be for showโ€”no real feelings, trust me.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t you guys just take whoever comes your way?โ€ I snorted, rolling my eyes. โ€œIsnโ€™t it in your DNA to never say no?โ€

Jared just grinned, not really denying it. โ€œWell, thatโ€™s only because most guys donโ€™t have options. But for someone like Ryanโ€”a top-tier eliteโ€”if he isnโ€™t picky, thatโ€™s just not in his nature. If his pride gets trampled, itโ€™s basically admitting heโ€™s weak, and then everyone will start treating him like a doormat.โ€

My eyes went wide in surprise. โ€˜Seriously? People actually think like that?โ€™

Jared gave a cold chuckle. โ€œAt their level, itโ€™s all constant invisible battles for dominance. Thatโ€™s just business as usual. Ryan would never let the Chamberlain Family control him.โ€

โ€œThen whatโ€™s the point of him even getting married?โ€ I asked, honestly baffled. โ€œI just donโ€™t get it.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s just a transactionโ€”mutual benefits, shared influence. Everyone gets what they need,โ€ Jared replied coolly.

I couldnโ€™t help but chuckle. โ€œJared, do you think youโ€™ll ever end up marrying just for an alliance?โ€

Jared looked at me, his eyes unreadable. โ€œWhat do you think?โ€
