Chapter 707
His masculine presence wrapped around me like a net, making my breath hitch.
When I looked up at Edward, there was a sudden spark in his eyes, filled with possessiveness and longing.
Back then, I was so afraid of him, I couldnโt even look him in the eye. But now, I could calmly raise my head and meet his deep, intense gaze. Maybe when youโre someoneโs favorite, you really do feel untouchable.
โIt hurtsโฆโ I whimpered.
His big hand instantly loosened its grip on my shoulder, and Edward gave me an exasperated look. โYouโre always acting weak.โ
โIt really does hurt,โ I flashed him a smile. โMr. Jennings, you sure know how to spoil a girl.โ
โWhat did you just call me?โ Edward crossed his arms, took two steps back, his presence almost overwhelming. โWhen you want something, itโs โEdward.โ When youโre not happy with me, itโs โMr. Jennings.โ Victoria, thatโs not how you do business, is it?โ
I blinked innocently. โIโm just showing you respect.โ
โCut the act,โ Edward turned and glanced at the fireworks bursting behind him. He walked to the window, his tone casual. โI didnโt expect Jane Leigh to show up too. Youโre not jealous, are you?โ
I quietly walked over to stand beside him, watching the sea light up with the sparkle of fireworks. โIโm not jealous. You and Jane Leigh have a daughter togetherโno matter what, youโll be tied together for life.โ
Edward narrowed his eyes a bit. โAre you talking about you and Jared?โ
โExactly,โ I chuckled. โOnce you have kids, even if you get divorced, you can never really cut ties for good.โ
Edward nodded in agreement. โYeah, Jane Leigh and I both think that whoever Nora wants to be with, weโll be happy for her. We wonโt interfere with any of her choices.โ
โOh.โ The thought made my heart sink a little. I wasnโt as at ease as I pretendedโafter all, I was the one who chose to give up custody of Yvonne.
Edwardโs voice softened. โNoraโs a really thoughtful kid. Sheโd never interfere in things between her mom and me.โ
I paused. โI met her last time. She really is bright and cheerfulโsuch a sweet kid.โ
Edward reached out and drew me into his embrace. โHave you been busy these days?โ
โYeah, the companyโs growing so fast, thereโs just so much to handle lately,โ I nodded.
That familiar pine scent on him always woke up every nerve in me.
Edward seemed a bit heated too, his fingers tightening around my waist as if he couldnโt help himself.
Edwardโs voice was low and a little rough. โHow much longer are we going to watch the fireworks?โ
โLetโs enjoy it a bit more,โ I slipped out of his arms, settled onto the couch, and poured him a cup of tea. โWeโve got all the time in the world.โ
Edward sat down across from me with a helpless sigh. โAre you just messing with me on purpose?โ
Honestly, I was. After all, you have to push a manโs buttons a few times if you want to know where his boundaries really are.
Fireworks filled my eyes, but in Edwardโs, there was only me.
At eleven oโclock, we headed downstairs. The crowd had thinned out a lot by then, and cars could finally drive in.
I mentioned to Edward that Iโd spotted Jane Leigh with Joel Sinclair earlier that morning.
Edward said. โLetโs not stay at that hotel. Why donโt you come back to my villa with me?โ
I was momentarily surprised, then remembered he actually had a place here.
โSure,โ I agreed. I really didnโt want to run into Jane Leigh again.
Edward took me to his villa, and thatโs when I realized the beach view heโd sent me that morning was actually snapped from the second floor here. Even at night, the distant sailboats and yachts made it obvious this was a seriously exclusive neighborhood.
Standing at the door, Edward said, โI barely make it out here a few times a year. I just had the housekeeper swing by to tidy up.โ
I looked around at the massive villa, realizing it basically sat empty all year.
But for someone like Edward, always jetting around the globe, no matter how many places he owned, he could only eat three meals a day and sleep in one bed at night. So it was only natural most of his homes stayed empty.
โWant another drink?โ Edward asked.
