Chapter 682
I took a good look at the poster and then looked away. โYeah, heโs drop-dead gorgeous.โ
โMs. Murphy, you totally couldโve had a guy like that in your collection back in the day. If you ever throw a party, donโt forget to invite me,โ Elaine joked with a mischievous grin.
I laughed along. โWho knows, maybe I really will get my shot.โ
โMs. Murphy, I just knew youโre not the type to stick to one tree. Youโre after the whole forest, arenโt you?โ Elaine said, acting like she had me all figured out.
I gazed at the busy street, and that powerful, domineering face flashed through my mind.
โKeeping a whole mountain and a forest of men isnโt exactly a bargain,โ I said, half-joking.
When I got back to my apartment that night, Jared called.
โJust ten days left and your course is over. Are you about to quit on me?โ Jared sounded like heโd been drinking, his voice hoarse with a hint of drunkenness.
โQuit what job? Are you firing me now?โ I teased him back.
โIsnโt that what youโre planning? You used this trip abroad to find someone to rely on for life. Even if you wanted to stay here, Edward wouldnโt let you. With him around, what could you possibly worry about?โ Jared knew just how loaded the Jennings family was, so in his mind, as long as I ended up with Edward, Iโd be set for life.
โJared, in my previous life, I relied too much on men, and it ended with me dying miserably. Do you really think Iโd walk down that same road again?โ I said, keeping my voice steady.
Jared seemed to snap out of it, his voice suddenly clearer. โSo, whatโs your decision?โ
โIโm heading back to Hachester and picking up my work again,โ I replied, my tone steady and cool.
โDoes Edward know about this?โ Jared sounded genuinely surprised, like he hadnโt seen that coming.
โWhy should I need his approval?โ I shot back, my voice calm. โIโm my own person, heโs his. We just crossed paths for a whileโthat doesnโt mean heโs my whole future.โ
โVictoria, I knew itโฆ you really canโt trust anyone anymore, can you?โ Jared let out a low, regretful sigh. โDid I hurt you that much?โ
โI just want to live my life clear-headed,โ I said, biting my lip. โWhether itโs right or wrong, as long as I donโt regret it, thatโs enough for me. It has nothing to do with anyone else!โ
โYouโre so chill and carefree, while Iโm just spinning in circles, stuck in a box I drew myself,โ Jared said with a bitter laugh. โItโs like Iโve locked myself up and canโt find the way out.โ
โNobody trapped you there, you know. Youโre the one who wonโt step out,โ I replied, not about to take the fall for his issues.
โYeah, I drew the lines, and Iโm the one refusing to cross them. Canโt blame anyone else for that,โ Jared said, poking fun at himself.
โJared, whereโd all your passion and desires go? Planning to become a monk now?โ I teased, laughing. โThe you I knew was never this boring.โ
Jaredโs voice was tinged with loneliness. โWhy didnโt you ever do what I did in your previous lifeโgo out, find other men, and just enjoy yourself? Why did you draw a prison around yourself and spend your whole life guarding the walls of marriage?โ
It felt like a blow to the headโI was left stunned, completely at a loss.
Even in my previous life, when I was drowning in despair, I still held my ground. I couldnโt even remember why I kept clinging to that red line anymore.
โI donโt remember,โ I said wistfully. โIโve long since forgotten what I was holding on for.โ
Jared let out a soft, ironic laugh. โI know why. Because you loved me, and when you love someone like that, no one else even exists.โ
I was stunned. โIs that really why?โ I wondered, a little lost.
โVictoria, right now I feel just like you did in your previous life. Waiting for someone to come back, I canโt even see all the women around me anymore. It just feels like holding onto this hope is the purest thing Iโve got,โ Jared murmured.
โI donโt need your bargain-bin feelings. Give me something I actually want,โ I said coldly. My heart was already deadโthere was no way Jared could win me back with pretty words.
โWhat do you want, then? Money? Fine. As long as you donโt quit, Iโll give you 30 million in stock dividends every year,โ Jared said, his voice rough and resigned.
โDeal. Just rememberโdonโt go back on your word,โ I replied, not the least bit shy about taking his money.
