Chapter 682

I took a good look at the poster and then looked away. โ€œYeah, heโ€™s drop-dead gorgeous.โ€

โ€œMs. Murphy, you totally couldโ€™ve had a guy like that in your collection back in the day. If you ever throw a party, donโ€™t forget to invite me,โ€ Elaine joked with a mischievous grin.

I laughed along. โ€œWho knows, maybe I really will get my shot.โ€

โ€œMs. Murphy, I just knew youโ€™re not the type to stick to one tree. Youโ€™re after the whole forest, arenโ€™t you?โ€ Elaine said, acting like she had me all figured out.

I gazed at the busy street, and that powerful, domineering face flashed through my mind.

โ€œKeeping a whole mountain and a forest of men isnโ€™t exactly a bargain,โ€ I said, half-joking.

When I got back to my apartment that night, Jared called.

โ€œJust ten days left and your course is over. Are you about to quit on me?โ€ Jared sounded like heโ€™d been drinking, his voice hoarse with a hint of drunkenness.

โ€œQuit what job? Are you firing me now?โ€ I teased him back.

โ€œIsnโ€™t that what youโ€™re planning? You used this trip abroad to find someone to rely on for life. Even if you wanted to stay here, Edward wouldnโ€™t let you. With him around, what could you possibly worry about?โ€ Jared knew just how loaded the Jennings family was, so in his mind, as long as I ended up with Edward, Iโ€™d be set for life.

โ€œJared, in my previous life, I relied too much on men, and it ended with me dying miserably. Do you really think Iโ€™d walk down that same road again?โ€ I said, keeping my voice steady.

Jared seemed to snap out of it, his voice suddenly clearer. โ€œSo, whatโ€™s your decision?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m heading back to Hachester and picking up my work again,โ€ I replied, my tone steady and cool.

โ€œDoes Edward know about this?โ€ Jared sounded genuinely surprised, like he hadnโ€™t seen that coming.

โ€œWhy should I need his approval?โ€ I shot back, my voice calm. โ€œIโ€™m my own person, heโ€™s his. We just crossed paths for a whileโ€“that doesnโ€™t mean heโ€™s my whole future.โ€

โ€œVictoria, I knew itโ€ฆ you really canโ€™t trust anyone anymore, can you?โ€ Jared let out a low, regretful sigh. โ€œDid I hurt you that much?โ€

โ€œI just want to live my life clear-headed,โ€ I said, biting my lip. โ€˜Whether itโ€™s right or wrong, as long as I donโ€™t regret it, thatโ€™s enough for me. It has nothing to do with anyone else!โ€™

โ€œYouโ€™re so chill and carefree, while Iโ€™m just spinning in circles, stuck in a box I drew myself,โ€ Jared said with a bitter laugh. โ€œItโ€™s like Iโ€™ve locked myself up and canโ€™t find the way out.โ€

โ€œNobody trapped you there, you know. Youโ€™re the one who wonโ€™t step out,โ€ I replied, not about to take the fall for his issues.

โ€œYeah, I drew the lines, and Iโ€™m the one refusing to cross them. Canโ€™t blame anyone else for that,โ€ Jared said, poking fun at himself.

โ€œJared, whereโ€™d all your passion and desires go? Planning to become a monk now?โ€ I teased, laughing. โ€œThe you I knew was never this boring.โ€

Jaredโ€™s voice was tinged with loneliness. โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you ever do what I did in your previous lifeโ€“go out, find other men, and just enjoy yourself? Why did you draw a prison around yourself and spend your whole life guarding the walls of marriage?โ€

It felt like a blow to the headโ€“I was left stunned, completely at a loss.

Even in my previous life, when I was drowning in despair, I still held my ground. I couldnโ€™t even remember why I kept clinging to that red line anymore.

โ€œI donโ€™t remember,โ€ I said wistfully. โ€œIโ€™ve long since forgotten what I was holding on for.โ€

Jared let out a soft, ironic laugh. โ€œI know why. Because you loved me, and when you love someone like that, no one else even exists.โ€

I was stunned. โ€˜Is that really why?โ€™ I wondered, a little lost.

โ€œVictoria, right now I feel just like you did in your previous life. Waiting for someone to come back, I canโ€™t even see all the women around me anymore. It just feels like holding onto this hope is the purest thing Iโ€™ve got,โ€ Jared murmured.

โ€œI donโ€™t need your bargain-bin feelings. Give me something I actually want,โ€ I said coldly. My heart was already deadโ€“there was no way Jared could win me back with pretty words.

โ€œWhat do you want, then? Money? Fine. As long as you donโ€™t quit, Iโ€™ll give you 30 million in stock dividends every year,โ€ Jared said, his voice rough and resigned.

โ€œDeal. Just rememberโ€“donโ€™t go back on your word,โ€ I replied, not the least bit shy about taking his money.
