Chapter 680

โ€œAt the last party, you and Edward seemed like total strangers,โ€ Nathan finally blurted out, unable to hold it in any longer.

I glanced around, feeling a little guilty. โ€œWell, actually, we go way back.โ€

โ€œThen why didnโ€™t you talk to him that night?โ€ he insisted. โ€œWas he jealous when you danced with me?โ€

โ€œVictoria, was I just some ridiculous blip in your relationship that night?โ€ Nathanโ€™s voice suddenly turned rough and pained. โ€œWere you two secretly into each other while I was left clueless?โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s not like that!โ€ I shot back right away. โ€œHonestlyโ€ฆ we had a fight that day, so I just ignored him.โ€

Nathan still felt betrayed, his voice thick with sadness. โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you tell me earlier? If you had, I wouldโ€™ve backed off that night. I would never have interfered.โ€

โ€œNathan, Iโ€™m sorry. Itโ€™s all my fault. I didnโ€™t say anything because we hadnโ€™t gotten to that point yet,โ€ I said, feeling really guilty as I listened to the hurt in his voice.

โ€œI always end up looking like a jokeโ€ฆโ€ he muttered.

โ€œDonโ€™t say that. Thereโ€™s no right or wrong in matters of the heart. That night, I was truly grateful for your invitation. Youโ€™re sincere, and thatโ€™s one of your best traits. Please donโ€™t let someone like me make you question your worth,โ€ I said, my eyes stinging with tears. I couldnโ€™t help but wonder, โ€˜What kind of villain am I really playing here?โ€™

Nathan went quiet.

I tilted my head back and looked up at the sky, refusing to let the tears fall. I knew love was always messy. Even though I owed some people, once things ended, I never went out of my way to interfere in their lives. I just happened to cross paths with them at the wrong moments, thatโ€™s all.

โ€œWish you happiness!โ€ Nathan said, then hung up in a hurry.

I gripped my phone, took a long breath, and finally managed a smile.

If this could help Nathan move on from all this and let someone else into his life, maybe it was for the best.

I didnโ€™t need any man to wait around for meโ€“because honestly, I wasnโ€™t that kind of person either.

I got my emotions in check and went to meet Edward.

He looked like heโ€™d just come from some fancy event, dressed in a classic black-and-white business suit. His thick, dark hair was slicked back, making him look even more intimidating. With that getup, he gave off a cold, unapproachable vibe.

When he walked in, I froze for a second.

Honestly, Edward always seemed way out of everyoneโ€™s league, with this โ€˜keep your distanceโ€™ aura. When I first met him, I thought he was exactly that type, so I always tried to steer clear.

But now, he shrugged off his jacket, just wearing a crisp white shirt and a black vest. On his usually stern face, there was a gentle smile that felt totally out of place on him.

โ€œHave you been waiting long?โ€ he asked.

โ€œIโ€™m not in a rush,โ€ I said with a smile.

As soon as Edward sat down, the food was served. He actually got a personal chef cooking at his place just for me, so every day I get to eat all kinds of regional specialties from Aurelia.

Now I totally get why rich kids travel overseas for school with their own chef and housekeeper in tow.

โ€œIโ€™m heading to Aurelia for work in a couple of days. Iโ€™ll bring you back a gift,โ€ Edward suddenly said while we were eating.

I paused for a secondโ€“Aurelia? My eyes flickered. His ex-wife lives there.

โ€˜So heโ€™s going to see her,โ€™ I thought, feeling a little uneasy.

โ€œOh, no need. Just focus on your work,โ€ I said with a light laugh.

Edward added, โ€œMy ex-wife and I send Nora a sum of money every year. Iโ€™m going to take care of the paperwork this time.โ€

I blinked in surprise. โ€œNora is really lucky to have such amazing parents.โ€

Edward sighed softly. โ€œMaybe. But we couldnโ€™t give her a complete family.โ€

โ€œBut she still gets plenty of love from you both,โ€ I said.

โ€œWe try,โ€ Edward replied, glancing out the window.

Just then, Edwardโ€™s phone rang. He glanced at it, his brow furrowing, and didnโ€™t bother to answer; he just put it aside.

The phone rang again, and this time, Edward picked it up. โ€œAlright, I agree. Sign him for a year.โ€

After that, he tossed his phone aside, and I could tell he was pissed.

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong? Work giving you a hard time?โ€ I asked, concerned.

Edward finally put down his fork and took a sip of tea. โ€œMy ex-wifeโ€™s new boyfriend is a supermodel, and now she wants him to be the face of my brand.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I gaped at him, totally stunned.
