Chapter 666
I yanked my arm free with real force. โA man who cheats on his wife has no right to play the moral teacher.โ
Jaredโs handsome face stiffened, and he just stood there, silent for a long time.
I walked back to my room and leaned against the door, my head all over the place.
Iโd been doing my best to forget all the pain from my previous life, so after spending so much time with Jared, I tried not to bring up any of that old stuff if I could help it.
But just now, Iโd twisted the knife in his heart all over again.
โMom, Iโm hungry,โ Yvonne mumbled, rubbing her eyes as she got out of bed.
I looked at my sleepy daughter and said softly, โYour dadโs outside. Go ask him to get you something to eat.โ
Yvonne shuffled toward the door.
When I stepped out again, Jared and Yvonne were sitting together on the couch, waiting for breakfast.
โMom, where are you going?โ Yvonne rushed over to me, sounding anxious.
Itโs Friday, and I have three classes today, so of course I need to hurry off to school.
โIโll come find you this afternoon, and tomorrow Iโll spend the whole day with you,โ I said as I crouched down and gently smoothed Yvonneโs messy hair.
โOkay, what time do you finish? Dad and I can come pick you up,โ Yvonne said sweetly, being all considerate.
โIโll let you know when Iโm done with class,โ I replied, and without so much as a glance at Jared, I changed my shoes and walked out.
The lobby of the Manor Hotel was bustling with people. This place always had a steady stream of guests, and most of them looked pretty well-off.
As I walked, I glanced around, analyzing what exactly made this hotel so attractive to its clientele.
Just as I reached the entrance, I spotted a taxi and quickened my pace.
But out of nowhere, a sleek black Bentley pulled up, blocking my path.
As I was about to step around it, I heard Edwardโs voice from the back seat. โIโll take you to school.โ
I froze, totally surprised. Seriously? What was he doing here?
โNo, really, Iโll just catch a cab,โ I said quickly, thinking about last nightโs mess. After what happened, I doubted Edward would even want to deal with me anymore.
And honestly, this was my chance to finally end things between us once and for all.
โGet in the car!โ Edwardโs voice was way more forceful than usual. โWe need to talk.โ
My heart was pounding, and every rational thought in my head told me to just jump in the taxi and get out of here.
But when I saw the red-veined eyes staring at me, it broke right through my defenses. I just couldnโt bring myself to walk away from him like this.
I really hated this feeling of being pulled in two directionsโthe more I tried to fight it, the more tangled up I felt inside.
So I just opened his car door and got in.
The Bentley cruised smoothly down the road.
Edward was turning his phone slowly between his fingers, clearly wanting to say something but not sure how to start.
I sat there tense, not saying a word eitherโif he stayed silent, so would I.
โSo why did you save my name as โFoxโ in your phone?โ Edward finally broke the silence, his voice low and uncertain.
I sucked in a breath and bit my lip. โIt was just something I made up. Didnโt really mean anything.โ
Edward didnโt buy it. He gave a self-deprecating laugh. โSo in your eyes, Iโm just some despicable, greedy, scary wolf, huh?โ
I was stunnedโwas his imagination always this dramatic?
โNo, itโs not like that. Itโs just a silly nicknameโฆโ I muttered, my voice growing weaker.
Honestly, he pretty much nailed what I was thinking when I picked that contact name.
โThen why donโt you even have my real name saved in your phone?โ Edward pressed. I had no idea why he was making such a big deal out of thisโit was honestly giving me a headache.
My mind went blank. I couldnโt come up with any explanation, so I just clammed up.
Just then, we passed a long stretch of woods. The road was wide and empty, hardly a soul in sight. After the rain, soggy leaves were stuck all over the pavement, making everything look damp and kind of bleak.
Honestly, I felt just as crushed as those rain-soaked leaves outside.
โPull over,โ Edward suddenly ordered, switching to Englysian.
He turned to the driver and said, โStep outside and wait for me.โ
The driver immediately turned the car and parked it under a big tree, where it wouldnโt block the road.
โEdwardโฆโ I gasped, my breath catching in my throat.
