Chapter 663
I hadnโt expected Jared to ask that, so I replied, โNathan was here recently and took me there.โ
Jared turned his head away, sounding annoyed. โFigures. I knew it was him.โ
Yvonneโs big, dark eyes flickered between us. โIs Uncle Nathan here for work?โ
Jared, almost as if talking just to me, said, โWho knows if heโs here for work or for someone.โ
I didnโt like his sarcastic tone, so I calmly shot back, โWhatever the reason, meeting a kindred spirit in a foreign country is a wonderful thing.โ
โAn opposite-sex confidant? You really call that a true friend?โ Jared sneered.
I shot back with a smirk, โWell, thatโs nothing compared to you guys and your so-called special female friends.โ
Jared went silent in an instant.
โDad, donโt start fighting with Mom the moment you see her. Did you forget why weโre here?โ Yvonne shot Jared a look, raising her brows at him.
Jared gave me a long, meaningful look. โCome on, letโs get some dinner first.โ
Jared had arranged for a business van and took Yvonne and me to a Mexican restaurant. But it wasnโt the same restaurant Nathan took me to last timeโJared had already planned for us to come here.
As soon as we sat down, someone brought over a bouquet of red roses and set them right in front of me. And right after, a violinist started playing nearby. The music was lovely, but the whole setup felt a little strange.
Jared was watching me closely, clearly waiting to see how Iโd react. Deep down, I knew heโd been waiting for a chance to pick up where we left off.
After the violinist wrapped up, all I could smell was the fresh scent of roses in the air.
โMom, Dad set all this up just for you. Do you like it? Are you moved?โ Yvonne asked, her eyes sparkling.
I fiddled with the bouquet of roses in my arms and replied softly, โThanks for arranging this. The music was lovely, and the flowers are beautiful.โ
โAnd what about me?โ Jared asked.
I met his gaze, my eyes serious. โPlease, donโt set up these romantic gestures anymore. Youโre my boss, and this really puts me in a tough spot as your employee.โ
Jaredโs expression froze for a moment, and then his face fell.
Yvonne overheard us and said quietly, โMom, I was the one who asked Dad to do all this. Youโve been alone overseas for so long, and I wanted to give you a little surprise.โ
My heart skipped a beat when I heard that.
Is Yvonne hoping Iโll reconcile with Jared? I thought.
โYvonne, like I said, your momโs a practical woman. She doesnโt care for these superficial gestures,โ Jared said, half-mocking himself.
Yvonne pouted, looking crestfallen. โOkay, Mom. I wonโt make suggestions like this again, I promise.โ
Watching the two of them putting on the pity act, I really didnโt know what to do with them.
โLetโs just eat. The foodโs getting cold,โ I said, quickly changing the subject.
The three of us sat down to eat, and surprisingly, things felt pretty relaxed. Jared was in a good mood. He ordered a bottle of red wine and poured me a glass.
I fished out my meds from my bag. โIโve got a cold and Iโm still on medication, so I canโt drink.โ
Jared looked concerned. โDid you get sick from the cold?โ
I nodded. โProbably. Itโs been raining nonstop and the damp chill just gets to you. If youโre not careful, itโs easy to catch something.โ
โMom, how about I stay here and look after you? I donโt have to go back just yet,โ Yvonne said, clearly scheming.
Jared shot her a serious look. โYou only got two days off, and with the weekend, thatโs four days. Donโt get any ideas about skipping class.โ
Yvonne pressed her lips into a pout. โAlright, I was just worried about you, Mom.โ
โReally, Iโm fine. Once the meds work, Iโll be good as new. Iโll be heading home in just over a month anyway,โ I reassured her quickly.
After dinner, Jared took Yvonne and me to their hotel. I couldnโt help but be surprisedโit was the very same Manor Hotel where Edward had thrown that fancy dinner last time.
Jared had booked a massive suite with four bedrooms.
โVictoria, Yvonneโs scared to sleep alone. Can you stay here with her tonight?โ Jared said softly.
I wanted to spend the night with Yvonne anyway, so I nodded. โAlright, but can you get me my own room?โ
