Chapter 663

I hadnโ€™t expected Jared to ask that, so I replied, โ€œNathan was here recently and took me there.โ€

Jared turned his head away, sounding annoyed. โ€œFigures. I knew it was him.โ€

Yvonneโ€™s big, dark eyes flickered between us. โ€œIs Uncle Nathan here for work?โ€

Jared, almost as if talking just to me, said, โ€œWho knows if heโ€™s here for work or for someone.โ€

I didnโ€™t like his sarcastic tone, so I calmly shot back, โ€œWhatever the reason, meeting a kindred spirit in a foreign country is a wonderful thing.โ€

โ€œAn opposite-sex confidant? You really call that a true friend?โ€ Jared sneered.

I shot back with a smirk, โ€œWell, thatโ€™s nothing compared to you guys and your so-called special female friends.โ€

Jared went silent in an instant.

โ€œDad, donโ€™t start fighting with Mom the moment you see her. Did you forget why weโ€™re here?โ€ Yvonne shot Jared a look, raising her brows at him.

Jared gave me a long, meaningful look. โ€œCome on, letโ€™s get some dinner first.โ€

Jared had arranged for a business van and took Yvonne and me to a Mexican restaurant. But it wasnโ€™t the same restaurant Nathan took me to last timeโ€“Jared had already planned for us to come here.

As soon as we sat down, someone brought over a bouquet of red roses and set them right in front of me. And right after, a violinist started playing nearby. The music was lovely, but the whole setup felt a little strange.

Jared was watching me closely, clearly waiting to see how Iโ€™d react. Deep down, I knew heโ€™d been waiting for a chance to pick up where we left off.

After the violinist wrapped up, all I could smell was the fresh scent of roses in the air.

โ€œMom, Dad set all this up just for you. Do you like it? Are you moved?โ€ Yvonne asked, her eyes sparkling.

I fiddled with the bouquet of roses in my arms and replied softly, โ€œThanks for arranging this. The music was lovely, and the flowers are beautiful.โ€

โ€œAnd what about me?โ€ Jared asked.

I met his gaze, my eyes serious. โ€œPlease, donโ€™t set up these romantic gestures anymore. Youโ€™re my boss, and this really puts me in a tough spot as your employee.โ€

Jaredโ€™s expression froze for a moment, and then his face fell.

Yvonne overheard us and said quietly, โ€œMom, I was the one who asked Dad to do all this. Youโ€™ve been alone overseas for so long, and I wanted to give you a little surprise.โ€

My heart skipped a beat when I heard that.

Is Yvonne hoping Iโ€™ll reconcile with Jared? I thought.

โ€œYvonne, like I said, your momโ€™s a practical woman. She doesnโ€™t care for these superficial gestures,โ€ Jared said, half-mocking himself.

Yvonne pouted, looking crestfallen. โ€œOkay, Mom. I wonโ€™t make suggestions like this again, I promise.โ€

Watching the two of them putting on the pity act, I really didnโ€™t know what to do with them.

โ€œLetโ€™s just eat. The foodโ€™s getting cold,โ€ I said, quickly changing the subject.

The three of us sat down to eat, and surprisingly, things felt pretty relaxed. Jared was in a good mood. He ordered a bottle of red wine and poured me a glass.

I fished out my meds from my bag. โ€œIโ€™ve got a cold and Iโ€™m still on medication, so I canโ€™t drink.โ€

Jared looked concerned. โ€œDid you get sick from the cold?โ€

I nodded. โ€œProbably. Itโ€™s been raining nonstop and the damp chill just gets to you. If youโ€™re not careful, itโ€™s easy to catch something.โ€

โ€œMom, how about I stay here and look after you? I donโ€™t have to go back just yet,โ€ Yvonne said, clearly scheming.

Jared shot her a serious look. โ€œYou only got two days off, and with the weekend, thatโ€™s four days. Donโ€™t get any ideas about skipping class.โ€

Yvonne pressed her lips into a pout. โ€œAlright, I was just worried about you, Mom.โ€

โ€œReally, Iโ€™m fine. Once the meds work, Iโ€™ll be good as new. Iโ€™ll be heading home in just over a month anyway,โ€ I reassured her quickly.

After dinner, Jared took Yvonne and me to their hotel. I couldnโ€™t help but be surprisedโ€“it was the very same Manor Hotel where Edward had thrown that fancy dinner last time.

Jared had booked a massive suite with four bedrooms.

โ€œVictoria, Yvonneโ€™s scared to sleep alone. Can you stay here with her tonight?โ€ Jared said softly.

I wanted to spend the night with Yvonne anyway, so I nodded. โ€œAlright, but can you get me my own room?โ€
