Chapter 661

Edwardโ€™s mom picked the perfect time to call. Did the housekeeper really spill the beans about Edward bringing me home? I couldnโ€™t help but wonder.

Just thinking about it made my nerves start to fray.

Edward shot me a reassuring smile. โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Iโ€™ll talk to my mom and explain everything about you.โ€

โ€œEdwardโ€ฆโ€ I blurted out, my breath catching a little as I called his name.

But Edward stayed cool and steady, like a real grown-up. He just smiled, then walked off to take the call.

I leaned against a pillar, watching Edward not far away, his brow all scrunched up as he talked on the phone. I had no clue what he was saying.

My heart was pounding, like Iโ€™d been dropped right into the eye of a storm. Honestly, my confidence was shot.

Edwardโ€™s mom grew up in high society, so when it comes to picking a daughter-in-law, you know her standards are sky-high.

Yeah, Iโ€™ve got my own business and a bit of cash now, but compared to Edward, itโ€™s like night and day.

Wait a secondโ€ฆ

What am I even doing? I scolded myself.

Am I seriously freaking out over the difference in status between me and Edward? I couldnโ€™t believe I was going there.

Why am I even thinking about this? Even if he wants to marry me, he still has to see if Iโ€™m willing to say yes! I rolled my eyes at myself.

Honestly, I was just giving myself a headache for nothing.

So, I turned around and headed back to the table, joining in on the conversation with the other ladies.

After a while, Edward came up behind me and just placed his hands on my shoulders like it was the most natural thing in the world. He leaned down, his breath warm against my ear as he murmured, โ€œLetโ€™s step outside and talk.โ€

That casual, almost intimate gesture of hisโ€“I couldnโ€™t help but let my imagination run wild.

I followed him out onto the quiet veranda, where he was waiting for me, a playful smile tucked between his brows.

โ€œAre you worried?โ€ Edward asked, a teasing glint in his eyes.

Edward couldnโ€™t help but tease me, his tone playful.

I let out a soft snort, โ€œWorried about what? Whatโ€™s there to worry about?โ€

The teasing look on Edwardโ€™s face disappeared in a flash. He stepped in closer, his voice dropping to a low, husky murmur. โ€œReally not worried?โ€

I straightened up, putting on my bravest front. โ€œIf worrying actually helped, Iโ€™d have taken over the world by now.โ€

Edward couldnโ€™t help but laugh, reaching out to pinch my cheek. โ€œYou really donโ€™t sweat the small stuff, do you?โ€

โ€œEdward, whatever your mom said, just make sure she knows weโ€™re not really a couple. I donโ€™t want her to misunderstand or get anxious,โ€ I said, meeting his eyes seriously.

Edwardโ€™s face grew serious, and after a beat, he said, his voice low, โ€œMy mom didnโ€™t object.โ€

I was stunned for a second. โ€œThat wasnโ€™t what I was worried about.โ€

Suddenly, Edward whipped out his phone and showed me a candid photo heโ€™d snapped of meโ€“then sent it straight to his mom. Her reply popped up right away: โ€œSuch a gentle beauty. If you like her, make sure you treasure her.โ€

My breath caught, and I stared at him, wide-eyed. โ€œHow could you just send my picture to your mom?โ€

The smile in Edwardโ€™s eyes grew even deeper. โ€œI just wanted her to meet you a little sooner. You and my mom have the same kind of spiritโ€“graceful, calm, and with a real love for life.โ€

I blinked, and suddenly something clicked in my mind.

I remembered how Ryan always seemed to be missing that motherly affection, and he definitely had a thing for older womenโ€“like me.

Wait, does Edwardโ€ฆ? I thought, my mind spinning.

The two of themโ€“uncle and nephewโ€“really did have the same type. Creepy, if you think about it.

I pressed my hand to my forehead, feeling a headache coming on. โ€œCould your driver give me a ride home? I just got over a cold, and I really need to rest.โ€

Edward looked genuinely stunned, clearly not expecting me to want to leave.

โ€œVictoria, did I say something to upset you?โ€ Edward asked, sounding genuinely concerned and a bit self-reflective.

I shook my head. โ€œNo, Iโ€™m just really tired. Thanks for letting me see a whole new side of the world today, and for calling the doctor for me.โ€

โ€œIf I didnโ€™t do anything wrong, why are you leaving so suddenly?โ€ A flicker of helplessness crossed Edwardโ€™s eyes.

No way I could tell him I was starting to think he might have some serious mommy issues.

Maybe he didnโ€™t even realize that being into women with the same vibe as his mom is basically textbook mommy issues.

โ€œEdward, do you always need a reason for everything before you say yes?โ€ I asked softly.

Edwardโ€™s frustration vanished instantly, replaced by a gentle smile. โ€œSorry, I justโ€ฆ Iโ€™m afraid Iโ€™m not good enough.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re already amazing, seriously,โ€ Edwardโ€™s mix of power and genuine humility was just lethalโ€“dangerously attractive.

But whenever marriage came up, I just wanted to chicken out.
