Chapter 629
Frank let go of my hand as soon as he saw the car pull up. Noticing I was staring at the car, he looked at me, curious. โFriend of yours?โ
Edwardโs voice cut through the air. โGet in.โ
Frank glanced at Edward, seeing he wasnโt much older than us, and guessed, โYour boyfriend?โ
I didnโt bother answering. Guys like him were just creepsโI wanted to get away as fast as possible.
Without another word, I opened the car door and slid inside. The moment I was settled, the car pulled away.
Before I could ask how Edward knew I was taking classes here, he spoke up.
โSorry,โ he said, his voice calm. โI checked the student list for your class and saw your name on it.โ
I just replied with an โoh.โ There was no doubting Edwardโs pull.
โWho was that guy?โ Edwardโs eyes were cold and intense as he looked over.
โJust someone from class,โ I replied.
โWas he hassling you?โ Edward asked, noticing I was clearly annoyed.
โYeah,โ I answered.
Edward looked me up and down. โYou must run into this kind of thing a lot, huh?โ
I gave a wry smile. โHonestly, not really. Where Iโm from, people tend to be more reserved and sensible.โ
โOh? What did he say?โ Edward asked, sounding casual.
Normally, I wouldnโt bother retelling something so annoying, but since Edward asked, I ended up spilling the whole story.
Edward snorted, clearly mocking. โHe just wanted a fling with you.โ
โIโm not interested. I donโt want to catch something,โ I said, leaning back and closing my eyes. โWhen it comes to relationships, you gotta have boundaries.โ
Edward chuckled. โOh really? As far as I know, youโve had two boyfriends since your divorceโand thatโs just in the past six months.โ
โYeah, so what?โ I shot back. โDo you think Iโm a player, Mr. Jennings?โ
Edward seemed taken aback, his expression freezing for a moment.
I laughed. โIf you think Iโm the type who plays with peopleโs feelings, then youโd better guard your heart.โ
Edward stared at me for a long moment before saying, โAre you trying to get rid of me?โ
I nodded. โHonestly, if itโs just being friendsโฆ I can do that.โ
Edward let out a laugh, though I couldnโt tell if it was out of frustration or amusement. He bit his lip lightly. โYou really think Iโd go through all this just to be your friend?โ
I looked at him seriously. โFinding a real friend is rare. Sometimes, itโs just fate if we can even be friends.โ
โStop making excuses,โ Edward said with a soft snort.
I let out a couple of awkward chuckles and turned my head to the window, letting my gaze drift to the row of tall sycamore trees outside, just enjoying the view.
โWhat do you want for dinner tonight?โ Edward asked softly.
I was zoning out, just watching the scenery go by, so it took me a moment to answer. โJust drop me off at home. Iโll talk it over with my roommate later.โ
Edward looked a little deflated, his voice dropping. โLet me take you out.โ
I turned to look at him, and his deep, mysterious eyes felt like they were messing with my head.
โMr. Jennings, mind if I askโyour ex-wife and kid are over in the UK, right?โ I said.
Edwardโs handsome face froze for a second, then he raised an eyebrow. โWhat are you getting at?โ
I looked at him seriously. โDonโt you worry theyโll hear about you taking other women out to dinner?โ
Edward gave me a strange look. โYouโre divorced too. After a divorce, people just go their own way, donโt they?โ
I was stunned for a moment. After splitting up with Jared, I kept working for him. At this point, itโs not just interferenceโitโs a real entanglement.
An awkward silence hung in the air; I didnโt bother to answer.
โOh, right, I almost forgot. Things with your ex have always been a messโheโs still trying to win you back,โ Edward didnโt bother sugarcoating it.
