Chapter 629

Frank let go of my hand as soon as he saw the car pull up. Noticing I was staring at the car, he looked at me, curious. โ€œFriend of yours?โ€

Edwardโ€™s voice cut through the air. โ€œGet in.โ€

Frank glanced at Edward, seeing he wasnโ€™t much older than us, and guessed, โ€œYour boyfriend?โ€

I didnโ€™t bother answering. Guys like him were just creepsโ€“I wanted to get away as fast as possible.

Without another word, I opened the car door and slid inside. The moment I was settled, the car pulled away.

Before I could ask how Edward knew I was taking classes here, he spoke up.

โ€œSorry,โ€ he said, his voice calm. โ€œI checked the student list for your class and saw your name on it.โ€

I just replied with an โ€œoh.โ€ There was no doubting Edwardโ€™s pull.

โ€œWho was that guy?โ€ Edwardโ€™s eyes were cold and intense as he looked over.

โ€œJust someone from class,โ€ I replied.

โ€œWas he hassling you?โ€ Edward asked, noticing I was clearly annoyed.

โ€œYeah,โ€ I answered.

Edward looked me up and down. โ€œYou must run into this kind of thing a lot, huh?โ€

I gave a wry smile. โ€œHonestly, not really. Where Iโ€™m from, people tend to be more reserved and sensible.โ€

โ€œOh? What did he say?โ€ Edward asked, sounding casual.

Normally, I wouldnโ€™t bother retelling something so annoying, but since Edward asked, I ended up spilling the whole story.

Edward snorted, clearly mocking. โ€œHe just wanted a fling with you.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not interested. I donโ€™t want to catch something,โ€ I said, leaning back and closing my eyes. โ€œWhen it comes to relationships, you gotta have boundaries.โ€

Edward chuckled. โ€œOh really? As far as I know, youโ€™ve had two boyfriends since your divorceโ€“and thatโ€™s just in the past six months.โ€

โ€œYeah, so what?โ€ I shot back. โ€œDo you think Iโ€™m a player, Mr. Jennings?โ€

Edward seemed taken aback, his expression freezing for a moment.

I laughed. โ€œIf you think Iโ€™m the type who plays with peopleโ€™s feelings, then youโ€™d better guard your heart.โ€

Edward stared at me for a long moment before saying, โ€œAre you trying to get rid of me?โ€

I nodded. โ€œHonestly, if itโ€™s just being friendsโ€ฆ I can do that.โ€

Edward let out a laugh, though I couldnโ€™t tell if it was out of frustration or amusement. He bit his lip lightly. โ€œYou really think Iโ€™d go through all this just to be your friend?โ€

I looked at him seriously. โ€œFinding a real friend is rare. Sometimes, itโ€™s just fate if we can even be friends.โ€

โ€œStop making excuses,โ€ Edward said with a soft snort.

I let out a couple of awkward chuckles and turned my head to the window, letting my gaze drift to the row of tall sycamore trees outside, just enjoying the view.

โ€œWhat do you want for dinner tonight?โ€ Edward asked softly.

I was zoning out, just watching the scenery go by, so it took me a moment to answer. โ€œJust drop me off at home. Iโ€™ll talk it over with my roommate later.โ€

Edward looked a little deflated, his voice dropping. โ€œLet me take you out.โ€

I turned to look at him, and his deep, mysterious eyes felt like they were messing with my head.

โ€œMr. Jennings, mind if I askโ€”your ex-wife and kid are over in the UK, right?โ€ I said.

Edwardโ€™s handsome face froze for a second, then he raised an eyebrow. โ€œWhat are you getting at?โ€

I looked at him seriously. โ€œDonโ€™t you worry theyโ€™ll hear about you taking other women out to dinner?โ€

Edward gave me a strange look. โ€œYouโ€™re divorced too. After a divorce, people just go their own way, donโ€™t they?โ€

I was stunned for a moment. After splitting up with Jared, I kept working for him. At this point, itโ€™s not just interferenceโ€“itโ€™s a real entanglement.

An awkward silence hung in the air; I didnโ€™t bother to answer.

โ€œOh, right, I almost forgot. Things with your ex have always been a messโ€“heโ€™s still trying to win you back,โ€ Edward didnโ€™t bother sugarcoating it.
