Chapter 623
Nathan walked in, and I buzzed my assistant to get him some coffee.
โHow long are you going for?โ Nathan asked.
โAbout three months,โ I replied.
Nathan drummed his fingers on the table. โAlright, Iโll come see you if Iโm free.โ
I was surprised. โYouโre always so busyโhow do you even find time to run around like that?โ
Nathan shot me a playful look. โI go abroad all the time for work. You seriously didnโt know?โ
Honestly, I had no idea what his work schedule was like.
Nathan suddenly pulled out his phone and sent me a photo of his friend. โIโve got a buddy over there. If you need anything, just reach out to him. Iโll give him a heads-up for you.โ
I looked at Nathan, feeling a bit undeserving of his thoughtfulness.
โNathan, thank you for caring about me, but Iโm just heading out for a few months to study. Nothingโs going to happen, so you really donโt need to make special arrangements for me,โ I said softly.
Nathan looked up at me. โAre you getting all formal with me now?โ
I shook my head. โNo, itโs justโฆ I keep accepting your kindness, and I canโt ever give anything back. It doesnโt feel right.โ
Nathan sat up straighter, his face going tense. โVictoria, why would you say that? Is it my concern thatโs making you uncomfortable?โ
I chuckled and shook my head. โItโs not bothering me, I just feel like itโs not fair to you. People are gossiping, saying Iโm stringing you along.โ
Nathan looked relieved and replied in a low voice, โI couldnโt care less what people say anymore. As long as you donโt ignore me, thatโs all that matters.โ
โNathan, Iโฆ I really donโt want a boyfriend right now,โ I saidโI had to make things clear; it wouldnโt be fair to keep things ambiguous.
โI know,โ Nathan replied, his eyes dark and serious. โIf you donโt want a boyfriend, then Iโll just be your friend. Just donโt take away my chance to be your friend, alright?โ
I stared at Nathan in surpriseโwhy was he acting so self-effacing?
โNathan, everything between us is already settled. The shares and all those dividends you gave meโafter I got them, you really donโt owe me anything,โ I reminded him softly.
Nathan lowered his gaze to the table, giving a wry, self-mocking smile. โDo you really have to be so calculative about all this? If I donโt owe you anything, then I have no excuse to keep hanging around you. Victoria, donโt be so cold, okay? Iโm not asking for anything more, and you know Iโd never force you.โ
Nathan looked up at me with those loyal puppy eyes, so eager to pleaseโit honestly made my heart ache and left me feeling helpless.
โI meanโฆ you should live your own life. Maybe you should meet other women. There are so many amazing girls out there, and thereโs bound to be someone whoโs a better match for you than me,โ I said softly, trying to persuade him.
When Nathan glanced up again, his eyes were rimmed with red. โIf thatโs what you want, Iโll give it a shot. But Iโm just not the type who moves on easily. Instead of trying to fit with someone new, Iโd rather wait for the one I already care about to come back into my life.โ
My heart trembledโwas Nathan really the kind of guy who wouldnโt leave, even if I chased him away with a stick?
โVictoria, why are we suddenly talking about this?โ Nathan asked, his voice tinged with grievance.
I pressed my hand to my forehead and closed my eyes. โI just feel like stringing you along like this makes me a really lousy person.โ
โWho says youโre stringing me along? Iโm the one being clingy and refusing to take a hint. This isnโt on you,โ Nathan said with a wry, self-deprecating chuckle.
If thatโs how he sees it, maybe I should just stop stressing about it.
If someone wants to stay, theyโll stick around no matter what. If they donโt, even if I got down on my knees, theyโd still walk away.
