Chapter 617
The heavy slam of the car door sent a jolt through my chest. I glanced out the window as the black Bentley faded away down the road.
โEdward was angry. He loved me but couldnโt have me. Who could blame him?โ I thought to myself.
I pulled out my phone and called Aiden, telling him Iโd come to see him.
Aiden said heโd agreed to go on a business trip to Gordezin and was heading to the airport. He told me this whole thing didnโt really get to him, and heโd just throw himself into work even more.
I knew Aiden might act a little childish sometimes, but deep down, he always knew what was right and what was wrong.
After hanging up, I went home, packed a few things, and headed straight to the airport. I bought my ticket and had some time to kill before my flight, so I found a cafรฉ, sat in a corner, and scrolled through my phone.
When it came to the Lynn Family, even if Isabelle ended up behind bars, not even a whisper would make it to the public. No matter how hard I tried, I couldnโt dig up a single piece of news.
Isabelle might not be totally disgraced, but in her own little circle, her reputation was definitely stained. That was a big blow for her.
I was sipping my coffee, glancing at the clockโstill more than an hour left. โWhy does time crawl so slowly when youโre waiting?โ I thought to myself, feeling every minute stretch on forever.
By the time I got back to Hachester, it was already pretty late. Figuring itโd be safer, I asked Jared to send someone to pick me up.
He just shot back a quick โSure.โ As I walked out with the crowd, I headed for the exit.
And there, standing tall in the middle of it all, was Jared.
He was holding a bouquet of flowers.
Surprised, I strode over to him. Jared was wearing gold-rimmed glasses tonight, which gave him an even more sophisticated, gentlemanly vibe.
Instead of responding to his earlier message, I just asked softly, โWhy did you come yourself? Didnโt you bring Yvonne?โ
Jared just chuckled and firmly placed the bouquet in my arms. โItโs late, Yvonneโs already asleep, so I didnโt bother her.โ
I let out a soft โoh,โ cradling the bouquet he handed me, and followed him toward a silver Bentley.
Jared asked in a low voice, โDid you get everything sorted out in Braylin?โ
โYeah, itโs all sorted,โ I said.
Jared shot me a long look, then opened the passenger door. โHop in.โ
โMaybe I should just sit in the back,โ I said. Front seatโs for the lady, isnโt it?
โAre you really trying to annoy me?โ Jared asked in a low, almost hurt voice.
I had no choice but to bend down and get in, clutching the bouquet to my chest. The scent was almost intoxicating.
Jared got behind the wheel and slid into the driverโs seat.
The car headed into the city.
It was quiet in the car, so Jared turned on some music, and we both got lost in it.
As we got closer to the city, Jared asked, half-joking, โWant to go check out the old villa?โ
I paused, looking at him.
โYou spent over fifty years there in your previous life. You must be pretty attached to it,โ Jared said with a knowing smile, glancing at me.
โNot at all,โ I replied flatly.
Jaredโs smile froze at the corners of his eyes, and he looked a bit awkward. โGuess Iโll just take you back to your apartment then.โ
When we got to the apartment building, Jared pulled up out front and kept his hands on the steering wheel.
As I reached for the door to get out, Jared suddenly asked, โDid something happen while you were in Braylin?โ
I was startled, then quickly shook my head. โNo, itโs nothing. Whatโs up?โ
Jared shook his head. โItโs nothing, I just feel like you havenโt seemed yourself since you got back from Braylin.โ
I smiled. โThanks for caring, but Iโm really fine.โ
I grabbed my bag and said, โItโs late, you should head back and get some rest. Drive safe.โ
With that, I walked into the apartment complex without looking back.
Before I knew it, the Lantern Festival had arrived. The moon was full, and since it was the weekend, I figured Iโd buy some ingredients and make some sweet rice balls at home.
I remembered back when I was a housewife, I always made tangyuan from scratch myself.
Yvonne showed up early, so I took her along to the supermarket to grab everything we needed.
Sally called early too, inviting me over for lunch, but I turned her down.
โIs Sally seriously hoping Iโll get back together with Jared? Back when we first split, she was always throwing shade at me, but lately, sheโs been way more chill,โ I thought.
Getting back together was out of the question, even with a kid in the picture.
After we finished shopping, I called Melissa Jenkins and asked if she wanted to come over for lunch.
She agreed right away and showed up at noon with lots of fruit.
I was busy in the kitchen making lunch while Melissa kept Yvonne company with a game of chess in the living room.
