Inside a cozy private room, it was just the two of us. Nearby, a cage held a few small birds, including a chatty crow that greeted everyone with, โ€œCongratulations on getting rich!โ€ and then, โ€œBeautiful lady!โ€

I leaned against the window with my coffee cup, playfully teasing the crow.

The crow hopped around, squawking, โ€œCongratulations on getting rich!โ€ over and over.

Edward sat in a chair nearby, watching me with a smile. โ€œYou just want to hear it say that, donโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œBecause I want to get rich,โ€ I replied, turning to him with a grin.

Edwardโ€™s gaze locked onto mine. โ€œHow rich do you want to get?โ€

I thought for a moment and said, โ€œJust enough to last me a lifetime. Who knows where Iโ€™ll end up in the next one?โ€

Edward chuckled. โ€œSo, do you want to make your fortune somewhere new?โ€

I turned to look at him. โ€œIโ€™m not really the talented type, so donโ€™t try to recruit me.โ€

Edward laughed at that. โ€œTalent comes in all shapes and sizes. Maybe your day job isnโ€™t your thing, but Iโ€™m sure youโ€™d shine at something else.โ€

โ€œLike what?โ€ My eyes lit up, wondering if he was about to uncover some hidden potential in me.

โ€œHow about being my wife?โ€ Edward joked, a playful glint in his eyes.

โ€œYouโ€ฆโ€ I blushed, half annoyed, half embarrassed. โ€œTrust me, Iโ€™m not wife material. Iโ€™m way too fickleโ€“always wanting to play the field. Whoever marries me is just signing up to get cheated on for life.โ€

Edwardโ€™s handsome face turned stormy, clearly annoyed. His voice dropped. โ€œEnough. Donโ€™t talk about yourself like that.โ€

I blinked in surprise. โ€˜I was just being honest about what some women secretly wish forโ€“how does that make me cheap?โ€™ I thought.

โ€œEven if youโ€™re trying to turn me down, you donโ€™t have to trash yourself like that,โ€ Edward grumbled, clearly getting more and more annoyed.

I burst out laughing. โ€œWell, maybe thatโ€™s just how I really feel, you know?โ€

Edward stared at me for a long moment, his eyes narrowing. โ€œSo you mean it, huh? Whoโ€™s the lucky guy youโ€™re chasing next?โ€

I turned around, grabbed a blade of grass, and kept teasing the crow. โ€œCome on, say โ€˜beautiful ladyโ€™ for me.โ€

โ€œBossโ€ฆ Boss, good morning,โ€ the crow squawked, instantly buttering up Edward as soon as it realized he was a guy.

โ€œBossโ€ฆโ€ That was itโ€”I cracked up, leaning against the window, laughing so hard I couldnโ€™t straighten up.

Edward looked exasperated and shot the crow a look. โ€œYou little rascal, quiet down.โ€

The crow hopped away, darting around with its clever little eyes, then squawked, โ€œCongratulations on getting rich!โ€ again.

I was still laughing when Edward tugged me to my feet. โ€œIs it really that funny to you?โ€

I stopped laughing right away, but I couldnโ€™t wipe the smile from my eyes as I just looked at Edward.

Edward reached out and pinched my cheek, then turned and sat back down. โ€œSeriously, you wonโ€™t even consider coming over to my side?โ€

โ€œNope,โ€ I said, shaking my head. โ€œI donโ€™t want to be bossed around by you.โ€

โ€œI wonโ€™t boss you around, and Iโ€™ll give you plenty of real perks,โ€ Edward said.

โ€œStill not interested,โ€ I replied. If I was smart, Iโ€™d stay far away from anyone who could mess with my head.

Edward looked at me, exasperated. โ€œYouโ€™re really gonna turn down such a bright future and all those chances?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m worried Iโ€™d just get even greedier. If I feed my ambition too much, itโ€™ll get out of hand,โ€ I said seriously.

Edward paused, a little surprised. โ€œDoesnโ€™t seem like youโ€™re all that ambitious to me.โ€

โ€œI am, but only as long as I can keep it in check,โ€ I shot back.

Edward didnโ€™t say anything else, just kept his eyes on me for a while before finally picking up his tea and taking a sip.

I didnโ€™t dare say anything else, so I just quietly sipped my tea too.

After lunch, Edward had someone drive me over to the police station. I made my statement, and the cops just told me to head back and wait to hear from them.

When I stepped outside, I saw a black Bentley parked by the curb. The window rolled down, and there was Edwardโ€“his face all authority and good looks. He gestured for us to follow, and the car I was in pulled out behind his.

I leaned back in my seat, my eyes glued to the Bentley ahead. I couldnโ€™t help but zone out, just staring at Edwardโ€™s car as my mind drifted.

We pulled over in a quiet spot, and Edward got out of his car, walked over to mine, and slid into the seat next to me.

I immediately shifted over, giving him some space. He leaned in and said softly, โ€œIsabelle probably wonโ€™t be locked up for too long. She might be out in a year.โ€

I nodded. โ€œI know, but Iโ€™m just worried sheโ€™ll come after me again once sheโ€™s free.โ€

I

Edward turned to look at me. โ€œDonโ€™t worry. The Lynn family wonโ€™t let her make the same mistake twice.โ€

I froze for a second, thinking, โ€˜Yeah, thatโ€™s exactly it. The elders in a family are terrified the younger ones will screw up so badly it drags everyone down with them. Mess up once, maybe you get a passโ€“but do it again, and nobodyโ€™s gonna save you from the fallout.โ€™

Guess thatโ€™s why the older generation freaks out whenever the kids want to go off and play entrepreneur.

โ€œDo you want to head back to Hachester now?โ€ Edward checked his watch. โ€œOr maybe stay the night and head out in the morning?โ€

My heart tightened, and I turned my face to the window. His words sounded like a subtle invitation.

โ€˜Stay the nightโ€ฆโ€™ I thought. โ€˜Just one nightโ€“anything could happen, and that made me nervous.'

โ€œIโ€™m heading back to Hachester right nowโ€“Iโ€™ve already got my ticket,โ€ I blurted out, not even hesitating.

The atmosphere in the car froze over instantly, and a heavy silence hung between us.

My breathing grew shallow and tense, my palms turning clammy with nerves.

โ€˜Iโ€™m not playing these adult games anymore,โ€™ I told myself.

โ€œVictoria, donโ€™t ever come looking for me again. Just stay out of my life,โ€ Edward said, then got out of the car.

The door slammed shut behind him, echoing through the silence.
