Chapter 606

I wrapped my hands around the hot water, took a couple of sips to steady myself, and finally told him everything that had happened.

Edwardโ€™s expression turned icy, his voice low and cold. โ€œI never thought Isabelle would be so calculating for someone her age.โ€

I let out a helpless sigh. โ€œShe really likes you. Sheโ€™s young, hot-headedโ€ฆ Honestly, it kind of makes sense sheโ€™d freak out when she found out the guy she liked was taken.โ€

โ€œYeah, this is all on me,โ€ Edward said suddenly, his gaze meeting mine, serious and intense. โ€œIโ€™m the one who started all this.โ€

I was caught off guard. I hadnโ€™t expected Edward to own up to it himselfโ€“it made me see him in a new light.

Edwardโ€™s eyes darkened as he said, โ€œWeโ€™ve gathered all the evidence against Isabelle. The only thing missing is a witness. Iโ€™ve already sent someone to track down that waitress from the teahouse.โ€

Hearing this, a wave of gratitude washed over me. I said softly, โ€œEdward, thank you for everything youโ€™ve done for me. I honestly donโ€™t know what I would have done without you.โ€

Edward said, sounding guilty, โ€œThis all started because of me, so itโ€™s only right that I take responsibility.โ€

Knowing he was willing to take responsibility made me feel a lot more at ease.

The atmosphere froze for a moment.

I toyed with my cup, sneaking a peek at Edwardโ€“only to catch him watching me too.

My cheeks burned, and I hurriedly blurted out, โ€œDidnโ€™t you say you were going abroad? How come youโ€™re still here?โ€

Edward lowered his gaze, a wry smile tugging at his lips. โ€œI was planning to leave tomorrow, but looks like thatโ€™s off the table now.โ€

I stiffened, guilt washing over me. Was it the mess I made in Braylin that threw off his schedule?

โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ I murmured, my voice barely above a whisper.

Edward shook his head. โ€œStop apologizing. Once this is sorted out, it wonโ€™t be too late for me to go abroad.โ€

I nodded, suddenly at a loss for words.

It was strange. With Nathan, Ryan, or even Jared, I could always find something to chat about. But with Edward, my mind just went blank, and I kept thinking anything I brought up wouldnโ€™t interest him anyway.

Actually, with those three, I could tease them, throw in some flirty banter.

But Edward was like a dangerous tigerโ€“definitely not someone you mess with easily.

โ€œAre you really feeling okay?โ€ Edward finally spoke up, clearly a bit bothered by how quiet things had gotten.

โ€œJust a little tired, and after that cold shower, my headโ€™s still kind of woozy,โ€ I answered softly.

โ€œIf youโ€™re not feeling well, do you want to go home and rest?โ€ Edward asked, concern clear in his voice.

I shook my head. โ€œI donโ€™t want to go back yet. Mind if I stay a little longer? If youโ€™ve got things to doโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNot at all,โ€ Edward replied, his voice deep and steady.

My eyes darted nervously from side to side, and I twisted my fingers together.

Edward suddenly laughed. โ€œWhy so quiet around me?โ€

I gave an awkward smile. โ€œI guess Iโ€™m kind of scared of you.โ€

Edward paused, then gave me a helpless look. โ€œCome on, Iโ€™m not a monster or anything. What are you so afraid of?โ€

โ€œNo idea,โ€ I just blurted out.

Edward let out a soft laugh. โ€œWe havenโ€™t known each other that long, but for some reason, being with you just feels so familiarโ€“like weโ€™ve known each other forever.โ€

I stared at him, stunned. โ€œSeriously?โ€

Edward nodded. โ€œYeah, sometimes that feeling hits me so hard, I end up looking for any excuse just to see you.โ€

His words made me think of that whole charity thing, and something stirred inside me.

โ€œSo, was it really your doingโ€“the donation to my old high school?โ€ I asked softly.

Edward looked a bit flustered, as if Iโ€™d just uncovered his secret. A faint blush colored his handsome face as he nodded. โ€œYeah, it was me.โ€

โ€œSo why did you do all that?โ€ I asked, curiosity written all over my face.

Edward held my gaze for a moment, then gave a gentle smile. โ€œI guess I just needed something to hold onto, thatโ€™s all. Nothing more to it.โ€
