Chapter 239

Tracy looked a bit disappointed. She was probably hoping to see me sad, desperately trying to hold on, maybe even getting hostile, or begging her not to steal my husband. My calm indifference clearly got under her skin.

She sneered, โ€œMs. Murphy, looks like youโ€™ve had a pretty smooth ride so far. You can just breeze through this breakup since youโ€™re not even divorced yet. But once youโ€™re out of the Holcomb family and Jaredโ€™s not there to shield you, youโ€™ll see that all those guys out there donโ€™t even come close to him.โ€

I had to admit that Jared was top of the food chain. But since I already decided to divorce him, I wouldnโ€™t change my mind.

I stood up and said, โ€œIโ€™m set on my path. Donโ€™t worry, Iโ€™m not going to get in the way of your little romance. Go chase after it all you want. But just so you know, your real rival isnโ€™t me. Maybe you should keep an eye on Amy instead.โ€

Tracyโ€™s face went stiff, and I strode out without looking back.

The hotelโ€™s grand opening finally arrived. The whole place had this unique blend of serene grace and modern luxury. By the time we finished the final touches, every room was fully bookedโ€“even three months out.

Jared knew everyone worth knowing, so the place was packed on opening day, and the gifts just kept pouring in. On top of that, we scored deals with several major companies, and even a few local government-backed firms came to us for partnerships. Honestly, I didnโ€™t see that coming.

Jared glanced at me and asked, โ€œAre these your connections?โ€

I was just as clueless as he was.

It was odd, but the contracts were legitโ€“weโ€™d landed all the corporate bookings for the next three years.

Nathan, whom I hadnโ€™t seen in ages, showed up to celebrate too. Heโ€™d been buried in company business lately, and one could tell he was a bit worn out, but it didnโ€™t dull his refined good looks one bit. He was wearing glasses, looking sharp and scholarly. He had already told me he wanted to book all of his companyโ€™s hospitality events at our hotel, and today he brought their team lead over to sign the partnership agreement.

Jared didnโ€™t look too happy about it, but since this was business, he had to show his professional side as the boss.

โ€œThanks for your strong support, Mr. Hallman. Looking forward to working together,โ€ Jared said, shaking Nathanโ€™s hand in front of everyone.

Nathan gave a polite smile and said, โ€œI promised Victoria Iโ€™d set up this partnership, so of course I had to follow through. No need to thank me, Mr. Holcomb.โ€

I stood nearby, smirking. Nathan knew exactly what was going on between me and Jared, and right now, he was making a point.

Once Nathan settled into the lounge, Jared suddenly grabbed my hand and dragged me off to a quiet corner.

โ€œNathanโ€™s only here because of you, Victoria. Donโ€™t tell me youโ€™re hooking up with him?โ€ Jared demanded, his face dark with anger.

โ€œTodayโ€™s the grand openingโ€“why spoil the mood with this kind of talk? Itโ€™s just business, try to be a little more gracious,โ€ I said with a light smile.

Jared took a deep breath and said, โ€œI canโ€™t be gracious. Weโ€™re not even divorced yet, and heโ€™s already making a show of it. Tell me, whoโ€™s really desperate here?โ€

I said coldly, โ€œAlready canโ€™t take it, Mr. Holcomb? Guess youโ€™re not as big-hearted as you like to think.โ€

โ€œVictoria, did Nathan pull some strings to land you those deals with state-owned companies? I heard heโ€™s got a lot of government connections lately,โ€ Jared pressed, his tone sharp.

His words made me a little skeptical, too. But Nathan never mentioned anything about it before. This was a big dealโ€“if heโ€™d helped me, he definitely wouldโ€™ve given me a heads-up.

I said, โ€œIf youโ€™re that nosy, why donโ€™t you go ask those managers yourself?โ€ Honestly, I was just curious about who was backing me up like this.

Jaredโ€™s face fell. He snapped, โ€œYou really think Iโ€™m that thick-skinned?โ€

I replied, โ€œSuit yourself if you donโ€™t want to ask. The deals are set anyway. And remember what you saidโ€“Iโ€™m taking half the profits. Donโ€™t go back on your word.โ€

Jaredโ€™s eyes darkened as he said, โ€œRelax. Your cut is guaranteed.โ€

Watching Jared head back to the entrance to greet the guests, I let out a cold, inward laugh. Business was booming, yet Jared grilled me about where the business was coming fromโ€“how ridiculous.
