Chapter 1000
A black car blocked the gate. Lily's driver frowned, muttering, "Doesn't he know he's blocking the entrance?" He honked twice. The other car remained motionless, its driver clearly visible inside. It seemed deliberate.
Anxiety grew as the driver honked again; Lily's bodyguards were also alert. Just as they were about to intervene, the car unexpectedly reversed, turned, and sped away. Everyone suspected foul play; no one anticipated such a sudden departure. Lily's driver remained tense, waiting two minutes before moving, ensuring the other car was out of sight. He sighed, โManiac!โ Then, he drove in.
Lily glanced in the car's direction, sensing something wasn't right. The driver had seemed to be looking at her, though she couldn't identify them through the glass. The rest of the day proceeded normally.
That evening, Alexander called, saying he'd be lateโthe end-of-year rush at the company, encompassing both domestic and international business, was intense. He'd postponed overseas deals due to her pregnancy, but still had considerable work. She didn't mention the morning incident; it seemed insignificant, and she didn't want to add to his worries.
"Don't wait up, sleep early after dinner. It's cold. Are the heaters on?" Alexander asked, rapidly firing questions.
"It's not like you don't live here," Lily retorted playfully, twisting her hair. It had grown considerably since her pregnancy.
Alexander chuckled. "I'll be back as soon as I can."
"All right."
After a brief silence, she thought he'd hung up, then he softly asked, "Do you miss me?"
His tender tone warmed her heart. Instead of answering, she smiled.
"Why are you laughing? Does that mean you miss me?"
"Nope!" She paused, then mumbled coyly, "I don't miss you!"
Alexander laughed. "Goodnight then."
"Goodnight!"
After disconnecting, Lily smiled. Instantly, the room plunged into darkness. All the lights, even those outside, went out. Dead silence descended. The household staff were startled, their exclamations echoing the sudden blackout: "What happened?!"
