Chapter 997
Ralph nodded solemnly. "Didn't you say you didn't want to marry me? If so, let's call it off. No need to force this."
"When did I say that?" Heather replied, subtly averting her gaze. She was unaccustomed to his intense stare. While she had no intention of marrying him, she didn't recall voicing it.
"You didn't, but your actions speak volumes. You're unhappy, reluctant about this marriage." Still braced on one hand, Ralph continued to gaze at her. "I know your beauty, figure, and wealth could attract anyone. Countless men would gladly take my place. Yet, I'm overjoyed you chose me. I thought, even without deep affection, you might at least have some fondness for me. We got along well; some of your actionsโฆ suggested you cared. Now, I seem to have been mistaken. I don't force anyone. If you don't want this, let's end it. This won't affect our families' cooperation. If you need help, ask me; I'll do my best. I want you to be happy, whatever happens."
He slowly lowered his arms, pausing near her shoulders before withdrawing them dejectedly. Sighing, he turned and left.
Heather's shock rendered her speechless. This was unprecedented. As a child, she'd only been surrounded by servants and family; none would dare treat her this way. As an adult, she'd encountered various men; those who got close were swiftly dismissed. Over time, even the thought of approaching her was deterred by her formidable aura. But Ralphโฆ was it their unusual circumstances? Had she let her guard down? Or was it simply that no one had ever spoken to her like this before? Returning to her senses, she instinctively grabbed his wrist.
"Stop!"
Ralph's heart leaped. He froze, straightening. Though he didn't look back, he inwardly berated his reaction. He'd expected her to stop himโno woman resisted this tactic. Yet, her voice sent a tremor through him. Even without seeing her, he was stunned. Regaining composure, he reminded himself not to be weak; otherwise, he'd be walked all over, never acquiring the Riggs properties.
He slowly turned. "Heatherโฆ" He paused. Seeing she didn't push him away, he licked his lips, wincing. "I know your concerns. We both have limited choices. I'm aware of my standing. A Russell with little power. You beside me would certainly elevate me socially. Regardless, I wish you happiness." He smiled wryly. "Please, let me go."
"Shut up!" Heather yelled. "That's nonsense! Who do you think I am? Can my marriage be so casually dismissed? I haven't even spoken, and you're already deciding? We're getting married, end of discussion. Don't even think about calling it off!"
Her tone was fierce, but her eyes lacked their usual ruthlessness, appearing almost gentle.
