Chapter 925
Celine gasped at Margaret's harsh words. After all, Margaret was a mother herself. Yet, her assessment was accurate. Women like Lily married into wealthy families solely for wealth and power. Therefore, Margaret declared Lily would inherit nothing, even with a child. A divorce would leave Lily destitute.
This shocked Celine profoundly. If her mother-in-law had spoken to her that way, she wouldn't have endured it. Lily fell silent. Margaret, secretly proud, assumed Lily was reeling from the revelation. However, Lily's expression was unsettling.
Before Margaret could savor her perceived victory, Lily spoke. "Grandma, it must have been hard on you."
Both Margaret and Celine were baffled. Was Lily attempting to ingratiate herself with Margaret to secure her release?
Lily continued, "It turns out you're still just a tool after all these years in the Russell family. At this age, you still have nothing. It must be tough. If it were me, I wouldn't be able to do it. Thankfully, I have my own business, so I won't end up with nothing." She looked at Margaret with apparent sympathy.
Margaret was speechless; Celine struggled to comprehend Lily's words. Mom's talking about her, why is Lily twisting it? Celine thought. Doesn't she understand? But Margaret grasped Lily's strategy immediately. Lily was using Margaret's own words against her.
Margaret had stated that the Russells disregarded their daughters-in-law, even after childbirth. Lily was now implying that Margaret, despite her years in the Russell household, remained insignificant, possessing nothing because even her children weren't truly hers.
Margaret trembled with rage. "Your tongue is sharp!"
"What do you mean, Grandma? You're the one who said it. Did I say something wrong?" Lily asked innocently.
Margaret couldn't retaliate. Agreeing with Lily would imply Lily deserved a share of the family's property, making her even more unbearable. Trembling, Margaret roared, "Don't call me Grandma. I don't have a granddaughter-in-law like you!"
"Okay!" Lily readily agreed, as if awaiting this response.
Margaret's anger intensified. "If that's the case, is there anything I can help you with, old lady? Otherwise, I won't dilly-dally here any longer!"
Lily rose to leave. Seeing Lily's perceived arrogance, Celine's anger erupted. She spotted a cup of hot water Lily had left untouched. A malevolent glint flashed in Celine's eyes as she lunged, splashing the water onto Lily's face.
"You b*tch!"
Lily, instinctively turning towards the sound, received the full force of the hot water.
